District celebrates first anniversary
Fazilka gets Rs 64 cr projects
Praful Chander Nagpal

Fazilka, July 27
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal gifted `64 crore development projects on the first anniversary of Fazilka district today. He laid the foundation stone of a five-storey District Administrative Complex to be constructed at a cost of `37 crore in Fazilka.

After laying the foundation stone, the Deputy Chief Minister, while replying to a query from the media on the government imposing a freeze on payment from the treasury for the last three days, said there is no “financial emergency” like situation in the state. It is a temporary measure for balancing of accounts and the payments would be released soon, he said.

On the imposition of tax on sugar, The Deputy CM, interestingly, shifted the responsibility on the Central Government, which directed the states to levy such taxes. He said the other states which have not introduced the tax till now shall also follow suit in the near future.

In answer to another query on the imposition on taxes on sugar and other commodities and increase in power tariff, a visibly perturbed Sukhbir said it is necessary to impose taxes to run the government. He, however, evaded a question about the taxes being imposed indirectly as there was no provision for taxes in the maiden budget of the current tenure of the government presented some time back.

Commenting on power shortage in the state, he said the Punjab government has purchased maximum electricity worth `6,000 crore. This purchase is the highest.

Sukhbir also dedicated two crucial bridges, a school building and a stadium to the people of Jalalabad sub-division, his home constituency.

The Deputy Chief Minister also inaugurated a `59 lakh computerised Fard Kendra at Fazilka, `3.15 crore 66 KV power grid station at village Theh Qalandar and a `2 crore high-level bridge over Jalalabad Main Drain at Mandi Ladhuka.

Earlier, Sukhbir Badal also laid the foundation stone of a `9.81 crore new building of the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls and a `7 crore multi-purpose sports stadium at Jalalabad. He also announced the setting up of a 100 bed hospital costing `22 crore at Jalalabad at the earliest besides construction of a building of the Government Senior Secondary School for Boys also.

He said being a border area, the development of Fazilka district would always remain on top of agenda of the state government. He said a number of times, the state government had demanded from the Centre a special border area development package so that the required job opportunities could be created for the unemployed youth. He said the state government, from its own limited sources, would soon announce a special border area package to boost the economy of this most neglected area soon.

Prominent among who spoke on the occasion included Surjit Kumar Jyani, Forests and Labour Minister, Sher Singh Ghubaya, MP, Ashwani Sharma, MLA and president, state unit of the BJP and Kamal Sharma, political advisor to the Chief Minister.

Star shooting range falls prey to govt apathy
Anirudh Gupta

Ferozepur, July 27
While Ronjan Sodhi and Manavjit Sandhu, both local lads and marksmen of an international stature, are raring to go during the London Olympics, the Boparai shooting range situated on the outer fringes of the town, where these shooters learnt the early nuances of the sport wears a desolate look.

The shooting range, which has produced numerous shooters of national and international repute including Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Ronjan Sodhi, Birendeep, Malwinder Sodhi, Gurbir Sandhu and Punitpal Singh, is a victim of the government’s apathy.

Lying deserted amongst the fields of village Khane Ke Ahl, the range exists sans facilities and equipment needed to attract the younger lot so that they can follow in the footsteps of shooting icons of the likes of Ronjan Sodhi who is currently ranked No 1 in the world in double trap event and is one of the India’s best bet at the London Olympics.

Malwinder Sodhi, Ronjan’s father, said his son used to practice at this range with him during the early days of his career. Ahead of the recent Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, Ronjan practised at these ranges only, said Malwinder, adding that all requests to the authorities for allocation of funds for buying equipment besides upkeep and renovation of this range fell on deaf ears.

The land for this range was arranged by local industrialist Vinod Murghai who was also the sarpanch of village Khane Ke Ahl. Later, with the efforts of the then Deputy Commissioner SS Boparai, the range was set up here.

Presently, there is only one gatekeeper posted here. “It’s been almost two months when people had come to practice here,” he said. District Sports Officer Sunil Sharma said the shooting range has three imported machines for double trap and skeet while 12 more machines were needed for trap facility, for which trenches have been laid. But there were no funds to buy the equipment.

Holy book goes missing from village gurdwara
Delay in arrest of thieves irks villagers

Bathinda, July 27
Villagers of Kalyan Malka today staged a dharna and blocked the Bhagta-Nathana road for over 12 hours following the delay in the arrest of thieves who stole the Sikh holy book, from the village gurdwara. The road blockade lead to chaos and slowed down the movement of vehicles. The theft came to light on Tuesday when the Sikh holy book was found missing from the village gurdwara.

A case under sections 295-A, 380 and 34 of the IPC was registered on the complaint of the gurdwara priest, Roop Singh, at Nathana police station. Roop Singh alleged that three unidentified miscreants had stolen the Guru Granth Sahib from the gurdwara. He had noticed the holy book missing at around 4 pm on Tuesday. The matter was brought to the notice of the police and an investigating officer was appointed to look into the matter. The villagers today gathered in large numbers to show their resentment against the delay in the arrest of the accused by the police.

Nathana SHO Sandeep Singh said the villagers were under the impression that the police is not serious about the theft of the holy book and was delaying the investigations. "The misconception was removed and they were pacified by the police. We assured the villagers that the accused would soon be arrested," he said. — TNS

Abohar residents resent losing out to Fazilka
Raj Sadosh

Abohar, July 27
Neglect of Abohar sub-division was debated prominently here as Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal planned a visit to Fazilka to join in the celebrations of the first anniversary of the new district today.

Prominent BJP worker Ramesh Jain, an advocate, who is the son of the Municipal Council president Bhagwan Dass Jain, said the state government cleared projects worth `64 crore for Fazilka but not even one per cent of the amount has been released for Abohar that reels under the worst-ever sewage crisis.

Interestingly, Leader of the Opposition Sunil Jakhar, former BJP state president Brij Lal Rinwa and former state president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, Vijay Laxmi Bhadoo, reside here but they have not been able to convince the Chief Minister or the Deputy CM about the funds needed here.

Abohar has got a 132 KV power grid station against a load of 220 KV. Both the cotton spinning mills and the agro juice plant have virtually died an unnatural death. The PUDA had identified 52 illegal colonies, 50 per cent of which have come up in the last few years, but not a single FIR has been registered against the offenders.

Abohar does not have a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), executive officer for Municipal Council and Improvement Trust, SDO for Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board on a regular basis.

Consumer Movement chairman Satpal Khariwal said 24X7 power supply to consumers in Fazilka has been ensured at the cost of more than 3 lakh consumers in Abohar and Balluana segments.

Inquiries made from scores of villages revealed that power supply has been shut down from 11 am to 8 pm to divert electricity to Fazilka. Power cut in Abohar town was enhanced from 6 to 9 hours with short intervals.

Chairman of the Senior Citizens Association, Captain SK Dutta (retd), said Abohar was being discriminated against because the electorate had defeated the SAD-BJP alliance candidates in the last two Vidhan Sabha elections.
