Moga drug inspector facing graft charge
Moga, July 26 When he was posted at Moga, the drug inspector was caught red-handed on June 4, 2010, while accepting a bribe of `5,000 from an employee of a local chemist. The functioning and style of working of the VB came under cloud in Luthra's arrest, after which, taking a U-turn, the Bureau registered a criminal case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 193, 195 and 120B of the IPC and 7, 8, 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1989, against the complainant, shadow witness, three chemists and ASI Jarnail Singh on the charge of manipulating the arrest of the drug inspector. The then DSP of the Bureau, Amarjit Singh Matwani, was immediately suspended from service and the SP of the Ferozepur division was transferred from his post. The re-investigation of this trap was conducted by another ‘controversial’ officer SSP Surinder Pal Singh against whom the special vigilance court of Mohali passed strictures in the corruption case against CM Parkash Singh Badal, who was discharged by the court last year. Banarsi Dass, the then DSP of the VB posted at Moga, another controversial cop who filed the cancellation report of the drug inspector, is also presently under suspension and facing a departmental inquiry for fabricating a case against a patwari. The controversy also surrounded the Bureau two days after Balram Luthra’s arrest when the local officials released the inspector from the police custody, allegedly under political pressure, without taking permission from the court. Later, the inspector was again taken into custody on July 15, 2010, and released on bail by the sessions court. Ramesh Grover, the legal counsel of the complainant Sukhdev Singh, said while considering his arguments and taking into account the facts and circumstances of the case, the sessions judge Karamjit Singh Kang has also asked the Bureau to re-investigate the case against the drug inspector. The court has fixed coming September 29 as the next date of hearing in the case.

Ahead of Dy CM’s visit, Fazilka taken by ‘power-packed’ surprise
Fazilka, July 26 It is learnt that the local authorities have received a message to provide uninterrupted power supply to the border town, ahead of the visit of the Deputy CM. The executive engineer, Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), Fazilka, Malkiat Singh Sidhu, however denied that the Deputy CM's visit had anything to do with the regular power supply. He maintained that following rain in upstream areas, the supply had improved considerably, but hastened to add that cuts could be imposed any time on the instruction of the higher-ups. "The VIPs should keep on visiting the town regularly so that the common man gets regular power supply. We had to bear the brunt of hours-long power cuts in the recent days. However, it is quite a relief to have electricity supply round-the-clock, may be for a day or two only. We wish it continues even after the Deputy CM's visit," said Mukhtiar Singh, the kin of a patient at the local Civil Hospital. The villagers are equally delighted as they are also getting uninterrupted power supply. Meanwhile, the civil and the police officials are on their toes making preparations for Sukhbir Badal's visit. They are working overtime to reduce the number of public complaints to zero. The Junior Badal would lay the foundation stone of the five-storey District Administrative Complex to be built at a cost of Rs 35 crore and a 66 KV power station during his visit to Fazilka tomorrow. Sukhbir Badal would participate in a cultural programme being organised by the local MLA and a cabinet minister Surjit Kumar Jyani on Friday night to mark the first anniversary of the district. |

Muktsar, July 26 Surinder Kumar, a resident of Kotli road, Muktsar, landed in the police net after one Dr Sukhpal Singh of Dabwali lodged a police complaint stating that yesterday, an unknown man called him to lend
Rs 9,200 to settle a road mishap dispute. “The complainant was aware that in the past, a cheater had duped some gullible people in the area by using the same scheme. He informed us and we caught him,” said Lambi SHO Gurpreet Singh. About the modus operandi of the accused, Gurpreet said, “The accused first collected all the information about his potential victim. He used to pose as the son of one Surjit Singh, a government schoolteacher at Kheowali village, and then asked for immediate monetary help. He used to narrate a cooked up story that his one-and-a-half years old son and wife were in trouble as some people had held them hostage after his motorcycle accidentally hit a vehicle on the Malout-Lambi road. He used to ask for money to settle the dispute so that he does not have to go to jail due to the road mishap, which never took place.” The police said four persons had so far complained that they were duped of
Rs 3,000-Rs 5,000 each in the same way. There was no schoolteacher by the name of Surjit Singh at Kheowali, the police said. A case under Sections 419, 420 and 406 of the IPC has been registered. —
