Shopkeeper shot, 2 hurt

PGI’s faux pas

The PGI seems to have committed a faux pas again. A day after the PGI gave its reasons leading to the amputation of Anupama’s left leg followed by her death, it has been discovered that two of the four doctors entrusted with an inquiry are not in the city.

Yesterday’s incident of snatching a car at gunpoint on the road separating Sectors 26 and 27 has failed to wake the Panchkula police from its slumber.

Robbers were polite to us, say victims 
Panchkula, July 26
“Aunty please come out, give us the keys and let us go. We are in a hurry,” were the polite words of robbers who snatched a car from a couple at gunpoint near the road separating Sectors 26 and 27 in Panchkula last night. “They did not push us. They came in front of our car all of a sudden and forcibly stopped us, but no one spoke to my husband. They just spoke to me and after pointing pistols towards us, they said ‘aunty please come out.

Good news for IT professionals

Finally, after a gap of three years, the UT Administration has cleared the allotment policy of the IT department for the Entrepreneur Development Centre (EDC) building situated at the IT Park. The UT Administrator, Shivraj Patil, has recently approved the allotment of space to young professionals who aim to set up their business ventures at the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park.

Renovate public toilets: Sulabh

The Sulabh International Social Service Organisation has asked the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) to renovate public toilets in the town before handing these over to the organisation for operation and maintenance.

Mohali, July 26
A premature baby, who weighed only 450 gm at birth, was discharged from a Mohali hospital today. The baby weighed 1.4 kg today. With this the baby has become “India’s smallest baby to survive”ť such a medical condition, claimed doctors.

Apna Ghar case
CBI to question nine accused

Panchkula, July 26
The CBI special magistrate today allowed the agency to investigate from nine accused in the Ambala jail in the Apna Ghar case. Till now, the CBI had investigated the case only from investigating official Bhim Singh Ranga and was unsuccessful in investigating from other accused.

Tributes paid to Kargil martyrs

Commemorating the 13 anniversary of the 1999 Kargil conflict, a large number of ex-servicemen, members of their families as well as civilians from the tricity paid tributes to soldiers killed in the operation.

Memorial to come up in Mohali

Boy rescued from ditch
Panchkula, July 26
A major mishap got averted when a 15-year-old boy fell into a 12-feet deep ditch at Indira Colony. The victim, Rahul, kept crying for help for about half-an-hour. Later nearby residents rescued the child.

No 'backdoor entry' this time
Chandigarh, July 26
No “backdoor entry” is expected this time in the recruitment of junior basic teachers (JBT) and trained graduate teachers (TGT) in Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Administration has claimed that the guidelines and rules prescribed by the National Council for Teacher's Education (NCTE) will be strictly followed for the fresh recruitments on contractual basis under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan society.

College teachers will be invited for research at PU, says new VC
Chandigarh, July 26
Panjab University is soon going to invite college teachers to pursue research on the university campus. The university is working out the modalities as per which the teachers who do not get a sabbatical leave from their college management will be asked to take a leave for an year, and the university would be paying salary to those teachers for the duration they pursue research at PU. The plans were disclosed by new Vice-Chancellor Arun Grover in an all-faculty meeting today.

PU-affiliated colleges to offer MPhil
Chandigarh, July 26
From the next academic session students will be able to pursue MPhil in colleges affiliated to Panjab University. Students will also have the benefit of doing a six-month research work for PhD in the college, instead of the university as is required at present. Colleges need the status of a research centre for offering these facilities. The university in a meeting held today finalised the modalities and requirements the colleges need to fulfil to get the status of a research centre.

In wake of the death of 17-year-old Anupama due to carelessness of a CTU bus driver, the State Transport Authority organised a training programme for the operators of private school buses today. Drivers and operators were made aware about various guidelines relating to safety of children.

Rice millers protest PPCB show-cause notices

Strong resentment prevails among rice millers of the district against show-cause notices being issued to them by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) threatening to disconnect their electricity connections or cancel licences, if they did not comply with the provision of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, as well as its amendments.

Panchkula gang-rape accused acquitted
Panchkula, July 26
In a major development in the infamous Sector-6 gang-rape case, the Panchkula court acquitted both the accused, Sahil Puri and Marshal Arora, today. It was after the victim, a resident of Sector 6, Panchkula, refused to identify them in the last hearing that they were acquitted. The case had come up for hearing in the court of the District Sessions Judge. The victim (a student of class X) and two accused were from well-off families.

HC sets aside no-trust resolution against Kurali Municipal Council chief
Chandigarh, July 26
In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has set aside as illegal the no-confidence resolution passed by members of the “ruling party” against Kurali Municipal Council President Harmesh Rana.

3 cops in the dock for harassing couple
Chandigarh, July 26
Three police personnel posted at the Sector 19 police station are in the dock for misbehaving, harassing and extracting money from a couple and performing their duty in a private vehicle last night.

3 booked under defacement Act
Chandigarh, July 26 Continuing its drive against defacement, the UT police registered three separate cases today. A case under Section 3 of the West Bengal Property Defacement Act has been registered in the Sector 17 police station against Deepak Sharma, a resident of Sector 47-D, whose advertisement poster was pasted on an electricity box.
