The accident occurred at 7.20 am when the boy, Mohammad Sarfaraz, was crossing the road. The van drove into him. He lived with his parents and three siblings at Nawada village.

The police refuted the allegation and said that it was investigating the case and trying to ascertain the identity of the driver. A case of hit-and-run has been registered against unknown person at the Bindapur police station.

Sarfaraz's elder sister Nazma while said that a woman from her neighbourhood, who witnessed the accident, told the family about the incident. She said that due to the impact of the accident, he was tossed in the air and fell on the road.

DMRC completes first tunnel of Phase III
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 26
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today completed its first tunnel breakthrough of Phase III at the Janpath Metro station site. The tunnelling was a part of the construction of the 3 km link between Central Secretariat and Mandi House.

The tunnel boring machine emerged at the Janpath Metro station site, after making a 909.3-metre-long tunnel from Chelmsford Club on the down line. The machine was lowered in the Chelmsford Club shaft on January 31.

The machine broke through from the south shaft of the Janpath Metro station close to the Chandralok building. "The drive began on March 4. The tunnelling was done almost 18 m below the earth's surface and the excavated earth was deposited at the Sarita Vihar Depot and the forest land," said a spokesperson for the DMRC.

The breakthrough was achieved in the presence of urban development secretary Sudhir Krishna, Delhi Metro chairman Mangu Singh. Krishna congratulated the DMRC team and said such engineering feats boost the self confidence of "our civil engineers and place them on a high pedestal."

Mangu Singh said the first breakthrough is always special and significant. He expressed satisfaction over the fact that this breakthrough was achieved as per the schedule and without any bottlenecks.

A man demanding justice for his two-year-old daughter, who he claims was sexually assaulted at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, attempted to set himself on fire this afternoon at Vijay Chowk, a high-security area, in order to draw the government's attention to his plight.

According to the police, at 2 pm, the man, identified as Mukesh, came near gate No.1 of Parliament with a bottle of petrol in his hand. He doused himself with the liquid and set himself on fire. A Delhi police beat constable saw him, ran towards him and pushed his head under a water fountain.

He put Mukesh in a PCR van and sent him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Doctors there said that Mukesh had sustained 25 per cent burn injuries and is not critical.

When Mukesh was being taken to the hospital, he told the police that his two-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted in Bareilly a year ago. He had complained to the UP police, but it did not pay attention to it, he alleged.

He arrived at Vijay Chowk to draw the government's attention to his predicament.

The Delhi police will contact their UP counterparts about Mukesh's condition. The Delhi police is not investigating the matter, because it occurred in UP, but is providing medical aid to Mukesh.

He had arrived at Delhi a week ago and was staying on the streets and in gurdwaras. He had allegedly tried meeting some politicians to address his problem, but was not successful.

Mewat gangs, snatchers on police priority list
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 26
The Delhi police will focus on curbing snatching cases and the activities of criminal gangs from Mewat in Haryana, said Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar at a press conference today.

Kumar said nabbing gangsters from Mewat would be one of the top priorities of the police. "We will conduct an interstate meeting over security arrangements for August 15. I will speak to the Haryana DGP about the Mewat-based gangs involved in truck thefts and robberies in Delhi. We will discuss, among other things, the areas where these gangs operate and the routes that they take to enter Delhi," said Neeraj Kumar.

Furthermore, Kumar said that there had been a rise in the number of incidents of snatchings in the city.

"In the east district, we have caught a snatcher allegedly involved in more than 20 cases of snatching," he said.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) SBK Singh said that the crime branch had made a compendium of alleged snatchers and given a copy to each of the 11 police districts.

The compendium contains a list of 194 snatchers. It has information on each snatcher, including the ones who after being released from jail have got back to the crime.

"To curb the incidents of snatching, we will ascertain the timing when the snatchers are most active, identify the vulnerable areas and setup police pickets in these locations," said SBK Singh.

ID cards for senior citizens

The police will provide identity cards to senior citizens registered in Delhi to enhance their safety, said Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar today.

"The cards would bear the senior citizen's name, address, registration number, contact number in case of an emergency, blood group and health problems," Kumar said.

The samples of the cards have already been printed. The police stations have been tasked to collect the details from 13,000 senior citizens registered in Delhi.
