2 boys drown in sarovar at Muktsar gurdwara
Muktsar, July 20 The deceased were identified as Harnadar Singh and Danishbir Singh. They were regular visitors to the gurdwara but apparently did not know how to swim. The incident took place at about 7:40 pm when the boys went inside the pond to take a holy dip. Some devotees who were performing the 'parikarma' of the sarovar saw them drown and raised an alarm. Meanwhile, the gurdwara management called the police, which in turn, called a private diver and started a rescue operation. The diver managed to locate them and brought them out quickly. They were immediately taken to a private hospital nearby where the doctor on duty declared both of them as brought dead. Till that time, the boys had not been identified. Later, some regular visitors to the gurdwara identified one of them as Harnazar Singh, son of Ekonkar Singh, the owner of Nishaan Academy in village Aulakh. The other boy was identified as Danishbir Singh, son of Raghubir Singh, a mechanic near the Ajit Cinema here. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary at the local Civil Hospital, where the parents of the deceased also arrived. ADC Baldev Singh, SDM Dalwinderjit Singh and DSP Kamalpreet Singh were also present on the spot and they tried to console the bereaved family members. An eyewitness, Naseeb Kaur, who works in the District Administrative Complex (DAC), said, “First, one boy went inside the pond and called his friend to join him. But within a few seconds, they disappeared. Then we people raised an alarm and called the police.” At the time of filing this report, the father of Harnadar Singh was seen requesting to the officials of the district administration to allow them to take away the body without getting the postmortem done. However, the parents of Danishbir were yet to arrive. Speaking over the phone, Deputy Commissioner Parmajit Singh, who was out of station, said, “As of now, we have not announced any compensation but we will see if the rules allow it.” |

Vigilance team reviews Abohar sewerage system
Abohar, July 20 After reviewing the situation, the Chief Vigilance Officer, BP Singh, observed that the sewerage system was in workable condition but the sewerage pipes were lying blocked as none had bothered to remove the silt for the last one year or so. Singh has issued necessary instructions to the MC officials and asked to arrange for technical staff from neighbouring towns to put the sewerage system back in order within 10 days. It is learnt that the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) used to take care of the maintenance of the sewerage system. However, the MC forced the PWSSB to pack off by not approving the annual budget for maintenance of water works and sewage disposal system last year. A few days ago, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Sunil Jakhar, led a dharna on the Seetogunno road to express anguish over the choked sewerage system. He spoke to the Minister for Local Bodies Bhagat Chuni Lal over the phone and the latter had directed AK Sinha, the director of the department, to initiate action. Some BJP councillors had also staged a dharna against the MC, which is run by their own party. During the stir, it was alleged that the MC president had not been visiting the office for the last couple of weeks; the executive officer seldom attended his office; and that the MC had not been provided engineers or technical persons to run the sewerage system. |
