Case cracked, 2 arrested
Chandigarh, July 27
The crime branch of the UT police achieved a major breakthrough in yesterday’s shootout incident at Sector 22 with the arrest of two persons, residents of Sector 52. A shopkeeper, Kailash Chand, was shot dead in his shop on Thursday.
1 injured in clash at PU
Chandigarh, July 27
A clash between members of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) and the Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) on the Panjab University campus left one injured.
The supporters of both the organisations had gone for campaigning at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology

UT plans to deploy traffic marshals outside schools
Chandigarh, July 27
Waking up from a deep slumber following the tragic death of Anupama, a student of the Government Model Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sector 18, the UT Administration is now planning to deploy traffic marshals outside schools to manage traffic during morning and afternoon hours. The UT Administration has asked the UT police to submit a report in a week’s time. The concept of traffic marshals for managing traffic outside schools and other crowded areas is prevalent in foreign countries. 22 milk samples adulterated
Mohali, July 27
Around 65 per cent of the milk samples tested by the Punjab Dairy Development Board in Sector 57 have been found to be adulterated with water.
2 labourers injured
Panchkula, July 27
Two labourers got injured this morning when a lintel of iron plates in a house in Sector 11 fell on them during construction. The injured, Nathu and Neelu, were rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.
Institute gets MiG 21

Scintillating performance by classical violinist

Unlike Carnatic classical music, Hindustani
classical music has very few artistes who play the violin. And it is even more rare to find women violin players in traditional Indian music. One such artiste, a Delhi-based classical violinist, Anupriya Deotale, gave a performance at Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, on Wednesday.

Move to allow thesis in Hindi, Punjabi

Language would be no longer be a barrier for students willing to pursue PhD as Panjab University is planning to allow students to write their thesis in Hindi or Punjabi, apart from English. Acting on a proposal by one of the fellows, the new Vice Chancellor Arun Grover has decided to work out the modalities of the plan. Apart from students pursuing research in languages, research scholars of theatre and music department can write thesis in any of the three languages - Hindi, Punjabi or English.
