3 students injured after fall
Were plucking fruit from a tree in Sector 11 government school when railing gave way

A major tragedy was averted on Thursday when three Class VIII students of Government High School, Sector 11, fell from the second floor of its primary wing building. The injured, Rakesh, sustained injuries on his jaw and fractured his left leg. He was operated upon for his broken jaw. Others who sustained injuries include Rajesh Kumar and Ranjit Singh.

Kailash Chand Sector 22 murder
Case cracked, 2 arrested
Chandigarh, July 27
The crime branch of the UT police achieved a major breakthrough in yesterday’s shootout incident at Sector 22 with the arrest of two persons, residents of Sector 52. A shopkeeper, Kailash Chand, was shot dead in his shop on Thursday.

1 injured in clash at PU 
Chandigarh, July 27
An injured PUSU member at the GMSH-16 on Friday. A clash between members of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) and the Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) on the Panjab University campus left one injured. The supporters of both the organisations had gone for campaigning at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Sector 25, when they had an altercation.

UT plans to deploy traffic marshals outside schools
Chandigarh, July 27
Waking up from a deep slumber following the tragic death of Anupama, a student of the Government Model Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sector 18, the UT Administration is now planning to deploy traffic marshals outside schools to manage traffic during morning and afternoon hours. The UT Administration has asked the UT police to submit a report in a week’s time. The concept of traffic marshals for managing traffic outside schools and other crowded areas is prevalent in foreign countries. In Chandigarh, traffic marshals assist the Chandigarh Traffic Police during nakas.

22 milk samples adulterated
Mohali, July 27
Around 65 per cent of the milk samples tested by the Punjab Dairy Development Board in Sector 57 have been found to be adulterated with water.

2 labourers injured
Panchkula, July 27
Two labourers got injured this morning when a lintel of iron plates in a house in Sector 11 fell on them during construction. The injured, Nathu and Neelu, were rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.

Haasya Kavi Sammelan
Panchkula, July 27
The Chandigarh Literary Society (CLS) organised a Haasya Kavi Sammelan this evening at the Indradhanush Auditorium in Panchkula. Famous poet Surinder Sharma, along with Mahendar Ajnabi, Ved Parkash Ved, Yusuf Bhardwaj, Dr Sita Sagar and Ritu Goyal participated in the sammelan.

Scintillating performance by classical violinist

Unlike Carnatic classical music, Hindustani classical music has very few artistes who play the violin. And it is even more rare to find women violin players in traditional Indian music. One such artiste, a Delhi-based classical violinist, Anupriya Deotale, gave a performance at Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, on Wednesday.

Move to allow thesis in Hindi, Punjabi
Chandigarh, July 27
Language would be no longer be a barrier for students willing to pursue PhD as Panjab University is planning to allow students to write their thesis in Hindi or Punjabi, apart from English. Acting on a proposal by one of the fellows, the new Vice Chancellor Arun Grover has decided to work out the modalities of the plan. Apart from students pursuing research in languages, research scholars of theatre and music department can write thesis in any of the three languages - Hindi, Punjabi or English.

Key appointments expected soon

With the new Vice Chancellor taking the charge, appointments to key post which have been lying vacant are expected to be made soon. The one-year tenure of Dean Student Welfare (DSW) is also ending at the end of July.

1 held for raping minor, remanded in judicial custody
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 27
The police has arrested a boy for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl of his village. Giving this information, SP (D) Gurpreet Singh said the victim’s father in his complaint to the police alleged that a boy of his village, Harpreet Singh, had raped his daughter after alluring her.

Bribery Case
Quantum of punishment today

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will be announcing the quantum of punishment tomorrow for the income tax official who was convicted by the CBI special court on Thursday for accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh.

4 kidnappers convicted 
Chandigarh, July 27
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge VP Sirohi today convicted four accused in the sensational case of kidnapping of a six-year-old child in 2008. The court convicted Prem Singh of Kishangarh village, Sandeep Kumar of Dhanas, Vishal and Sahil, both residents of Dhaska village in Yamunanagar district, for kidnapping Japjit for a ransom of Rs 3.5 lakh. The quantum of sentence will be announced on July 30.

Build overbridge at Bitna village, HC to NHAI
Chandigarh, July 27
Divided by the national highway, Bitna village will be united once again. Acting on a petition claiming that Bitna village in Kalka tehsil of Panchkula district has been divided into two parts due to the construction of National Highway- 22, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has set a two-month deadline for the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to construct a foot overbridge. Directions have also been issued to the NHAI to lay a service road.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked chief secretaries of Punjab and Haryana to put their heads together with Adviser to the UT Administrator and find an alternative source of water supply to the Sukhna lake.

One person was killed when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Mullanpur.

Another complaint against developer
Panchkula, July 27
A resident of Jind has lodged a complaint with the Panchkula police against Jeevan Garg, stating that he was duped of Rs 20 lakh by the Royale Empire developer. According to sources in the police, Garg is at present in Dubai and it is coordinating with the Dubai police to reach him. Garg, MD of Royale Empire, had absconded after a number of complaints were received by the police against him.

Rishabh gets better of Sarvesh

In the inaugural match of the Chandigarh Pro-Circuit League 6 Tournament Series, Rishabh Gupta of Chandigarh prevailed over Sarvesh of Haryana by 3-2. In other matches, Shrestha of Haryana played a controlled game and registered a 3-0 win against Amar Benipal.
