Trenches pose threat to city residents

Trenches dug up in different parts of the city present a deplorable sight of lack of maintenance and are potential sites for accidents, as has come to surface after the drowning of 20-year-old Tinku Prasad at the Animal Park, Sector 49, here today.
Such pits have become more dangerous in wake of monsoon which has filled them with rain water. A random survey conducted by the Tribune team showcased the callous attitude of the authorities.

Youth shot at, injured
Mohali, July 10
A youth, identified as Prabhjit Singh, who is said to be a former president of the Student Organisation of Panjab University
(SOPU), was injured when a group of four youths shot at him at Sector 69 around 9 pm today.

HC steps in to save Sukhna
Chandigarh, July 10
Parched and struggling to live again, a new lease of life may flow into the Sukhna Lake in the coming few days.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the states of Punjab and Haryana to deploy 100 men each to pave way for water to reach the lake from the check dams in
Kansal. The Chandigarh Administration, too, was directed to coordinate with both the states.

Proposal to link 190 check dams in sanctuary with lake
Chandigarh, July 10
The committee, which has been formed to save the city’s landmark Sukhna Lake, has come up with a proposal to lay a pipeline in the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary to connect 190 check dams with the lake. With this proposal, the officials believe that they would be able to provide some water to the lake.
27 fresh diarrhoea cases reported
Chandigarh, July 10
A total of 27 fresh cases of diarrhoea were reported from different parts of the city today. An official press release confirmed that 10 cases were reported at the Vikas Nagar camp and 17 at the Civil Hospital, Mani Majra. An official press note said one case from Vikas Nagar and three from the Mani Majra Civil Hospital were referred to the General Hospital, Sector 16.
Water pipeline bursts

Sectors in the southern belt of the city will have poor water supply on Wednesday because of damage in the main supply line at Sector 53 near the Beant Singh Memorial, Sector 42, here today.

UT works out modalities to receive taxes online

Backlog of vehicle registration mounts

Around 10,000 vehicles in the city await registration due to delay in delivery of smart cards used for issuing vehicle registration documents as well as driving licenses. Due to this huge backlog at the Registration and Licensing Authority office, the document seekers were being given extended dates stretching up to two months.

Insurance company to pay up for unfair practice

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered the Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to a Naya Gaon resident for causing him "mental tension, physical harassment as well as monetary loss". The insurance company has also been asked to refund Rs 75,000 charged as premium for a policy "wrongly, illegally and arbitrarily" issued in his brother's name.

Counselling disappoints engg applicants

Barring a handful of students, the joint admission counselling for four city engineering institutes has failed to bring cheer to many. A review of the seat allotment lists of PEC University, CCET, UIET and University Institute of Chemical Engineering clearly indicates that a large number of students have not been able to make it to the stream enlisted as their first choice.
CBSE discontinues issuing of blueprints
