MC couldn't care less

Throwing all rules to the winds, MC officials have laid seven-odd new pipes in the Budha Nullah, which is the most polluted water body of the state. On the one hand, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials claim that they are in the process of closing all means of water disposal into the nullah, but on the other hand, it is laying new pipes in it.

Another child abducted from railway station

There seems to be no stopping the abduction of children from railway stations across the country. In the latest incident, a city resident claimed that his eight-year-child identified as Suraj was allegedly abducted from either the Saharanpur or Ambala railway station during the wee hours of today.

Gurmukh Singh, sarpanch of Narangwal village, has been booked for allegedly pocketing the pension of six dead men. The sarpanch was booked following an audit conducted by the social security department a few days ago.

Husband caught for double murder
Ludhiana, July 10
It was a 38-year-old migrant from Bihar who killed his wife and 14-year-old daughter nearly three months ago. The Daba police today brought Mohan Chowdhary from Baliya in Bihar and claimed to have cracked the blind murder case of a girl whose badly mutilated body was found from the roadside in the Lohara area on May 21.

Railway tickets: Revised 'tatkal' timings make reservation easier

With the railway authorities tightening the noose around touts and colluding railway staff and the revised timings of 10 am to 12 noon for booking "tatkal" railway tickets has come as a huge relief to people.

Incentives fail to draw couples to family planning surgeries
Ludhiana, July 10
Even though the government gives incentives to couples for free-of-cost non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) and tubectomy, very few people are going in for permanent family planning solutions. The government gives an incentive of Rs 1,100 to a person for undergoing NSV and Rs 200 to the motivator.

Traders upset with move

The excise and taxation department's move, under which a trader is required to fill in C-forms before getting those issued from the department, has not found favour with traders. The department has made it mandatory for traders to completely fill in the forms by sitting in the department's office and get those stamped from the official concerned there.

Girl was born to unwed mother
Ludhiana, July 10

The police has tracked the mother of the girl that was kept in a small basket and spotted floating in the Sirhind branch canal near Sudhar here yesterday. The girl was born to an unmarried woman at a nursing home located close to the canal in the Sudhar area.

Ganda nullah not cleaned, may overflow this monsoon

Even as the residents of areas along the under-construction Ganda nullah project near Field Ganj are living in constant fear of overflow, another part of the nullah near the Bhadaur House may overflow as it has not been cleaned for several weeks.

Health dept team takes water samples from schools

Taking a strict note of the complaints of students being forced to drink contaminated water in the educational institutes in the Jagraon area, a team of the health department officials took samples of waters from as many as five educational institutes, including four schools and a college, of the Jagraon area today.

A suspected dengue patient of Bathinda district who is under treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital has tested positive. The 53-year-old patient, Karnail Singh, belongs to Deon villlage of Bathinda district. According to the reports of the health department, "No fresh case has been reported from any hospital in Ludhiana today."

DC extends ban on hookah bars

As youngsters were getting hooked on to hookah and drugs here, it became a matter of great concern, the District Magistrate, Rahul Tiwari, extended an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, that no hooka would be placed for consumption to visitors in restaurants/ hooka bars.

Man was victim of mistaken identity

A 25-year-old grocer, who was abducted and beaten up by members of the land mafia here last night, was a victim of mistaken identity. The victim, identified as Bharat Bhushan Sharma (25) of Rishi Nagar, suffered a fracture on the right hand and injuries all over his body.

One held with 15-kg poppy husk, half-kg opium
Jagraon, July 10
The Sidhwan Bet police has arrested one drug peddler and seized 15 kilograms of poppy husk and 500 grams of opium from his possession. The accused has been identified as Jagdev Singh of Burj Hari Singh village, near Raikot.
