Rain exposes Patiala MC working

Tribune News Service

Patiala, July 10
With the royal city of Patiala receiving heavy rainfall in the morning, virtual puddles were spotted in many city areas exposing failure of the Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) authorities in improving the drainage system before the onset of the monsoon season. The ill-equipped drainage system and the choked sewerage are the main reasons that lead to waterlogging in most of the city areas. As the rain started, within half an hour, several parts of the city were flooded with water, adversely affecting the vehicular movement.

The city areas including Lower Mall, Model Town, Anand Nagar, New Rajoura Colony, YPS School Road, Sirhind Road, Tripri, Bus Stand Road, Railway Station, Raghu Majra, Dharampura Bazaar, Arjun Nagar and Chhoti Baradari were inundated with the rainwater. Interacting with The Tribune, city residents expressed their dismay over the civic body for failing to find a permanent solution to the problem of waterlogging during the monsoon season.

JS Grewal, a resident of the Tripri said that there was an urgent need of improving the drainage system in the city. “The waterlogging creates lot of difficulty particularly for the commuters, who ply on two-wheelers. The Patiala MC should seriously look into the matter and ensure that traffic movement should not hamper during the rainy season,” he demanded.

Expressing similar views, Sarita, a resident of Anand Nagar said that gravity of the problem could well be gauged from the fact that rainwater entered in the houses.

A visit to different parts of the city brought to light that majority of the areas were drenched with water.

“Though every year, the Patiala (MC) authorities make tall claims that de-silting of the water channels, seasonal rivulets, open drains and sewerage, is done before the monsoon season yet the ground reality speaks otherwise,” said residents of New Lal Bagh.

While the commuters have to struggle to reach their destination on time, the waterlogging creates problems for the shopkeepers and residents as well. The situation in the low-lying areas like New Rajpura Colony was worst. Infact, roads one of the posh localities of Model Town was drenched with rain water.
