BJP leaders submit memo to CEO, IG
Dehradun, July 7 The members drew the attention of the Chief Election Officer Radha Raturi towards the misuse of government machinery by the Congress government in Sitarganj byelection and local administration's alleged biased behaviour against the BJP. They urged Raturi to change the Returning Officer as they alleged, he was working as the agent of
the Congress. During the meeting with IG Ram Singh Meena, the members said the local administration refused to file an FIR even though three persons had assaulted MLA (Nanak Matta) Prem Singh Rana. "The Congress government has let loose goons in Sitarganj and are threatening BJP supporters so that they do not come out to vote tomorrow. Our MLA Rana was threatened at gunpoint on July 6, while he was returning from a relative's house at night after having dinner," charged Harbans Kapoor, BJP MLA. The BJP leaders said they were fearing the situation would turn violent on the day of the election and demanded security for the BJP voters and candidates. Later, addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Mukesh Mahindra said the local police in Sitarganj deliberately created delay in filing an FIR and alleged the police and local administration were working as agents of the Congress. The BJP also burnt the effigies of Bahuguna government at Clock Tower to lodge their protest. |

He pointed out that Uttarkhand had got a new impetus in development ever since Vijay Bahuguna came to power in the state. He said the welfare of the unprivileged sections of society and minority sections had been taken up
on priority by the Bahuguna government. Dhasmana also asserted that the state was now witnessing all around development with every region of the state getting equal importance. |

24 diagnosed with chickenpox, jaundice in Kumaon region
Pithoragarh, July 7 A medical team went to Simagaon village in Dwarahat subdivision of Almora district today and surveyed the village and took samples of all children for testing. It found six children suffering from chickenpox, RS Shahi, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Almora, said. The team led by Tehsildar BS Gunjiyal medically examined the affected children in and around Simalgaon village and found symptoms of chickenpox in six of them. Of these two children were recovering fast, said Shahi. The CMO added a pharmacist had been posted in the affected areas and special teams of doctors were treating the patients. “There is no need to panic over the cases of chickenpox as it is merely a viral infection that spreads due to lack of proper sanitation,” he said. The district administration had to intervene to check the spread of the epidemic after the primary health centre at Dwarahat verified that the children admitted there were suffering from chickenpox. “We referred the cases to hospital after we found a big abscess on the body and faces of the children admitted to the primary health centre,” said Dr Amit Mishra, in-charge of the public health centre, Dwarahat. Meanwhile, the sub-divisional administration has also taken cognisance of the jaundice cases that were reported from Soni village in the Tarikhet area of the district. A medical team that was sent to the village had found two persons suffering from jaundice and they were being treated,” said Dr Azal Patel, in-charge of the team. In the Ganai area of Pithoragarh district, 19 villagers fell ill due to food poisoning after they ate ‘halwa’ (sweet pudding) that was served to them when they were working in a field. “Of the 19 patients admitted to the primary health centre, we have referred two serious patients for better medical treatment and eight others have been referred to the Pithoragarh district hospital,” said Dr AB Upadhyaya, Medical Officer at the public health centre, Ganai. |

Ministers await CM nod to attend London Olympics
Dehradun, July 7 But this has not stopped the three Cabinet ministers from wanting to attend London Olympics, albeit, as spectators. They are awaiting a positive response from the Chief Minister in this regard. The three ministers are Finance Minister Indira Hriyadesh, Rural Development Minister Pritam Singh and Minister for Sports and Planning Dinesh Aggarwal. What has baffled critics is the desire of the Uttarakhand Olympics Association, which has only Olympics Rajkiya Khel organised in 2001 to its credit, to take the three ministers to London when only Agarwal is holding the sports portfolio. Meanwhile, president of the Uttarakhand Olympics Association Rajeev Mehta declined to comment on the issue. It has been learnt that the association had been at loggerheads with the state government on the issue of funds. After the lone sporting event in 2001 the association had nothing spectacular to speak about in the area of sports. The increasing activism of ministers in sports with the Finance Minister promising to build a world class stadium in Haldwani and Sports Minister Aggarwal’s desire to host National Games in the state in 2016 indicate that they want to associate themselves with sports associations. Besides, if the Uttarakhand Olympics Association manages to take at least one minister on board to London, it may benefit from it as it has been facing the government apathy in the past and may finally get the much-needed funds after the Olympics. london bound

He said the state Forest Department was working hard towards ensuring capacity building of its forest guards deployed in the territorial divisions of the Corbett. “We have submitted a proposal to the National Tiger Conservation Authority in this regard. Referring to proposed Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF), Sharma said the Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra models had been submitted and the state was working on a war footing towards facilitating the formation of the STPF in the state. Admitting that the monsoon was a vulnerable period for wildlife, he said the department had intensified nigth patrolling in view of rains. He added the Corbett authorities were taking all possible measures to monitor the movements of poachers. Process of rehab plan for Karnataka districts discussed
Dehradun, July 7 Director General, ICFRE, Dr VK Bahuguna reviewed the process of the preparation of plans and outlined the important role of the FIMI in it. Bahugana said many small mines that had very limited area for dumps may not be ecologically sustainable if one calculated the capacity of dumps only for next five years. For such mines, the capacity should be calculated on the basis of site specific conditions. “It may also be possible that such mines may be amalgamated to the adjoining bigger mine for sustainable mining and for this the Central Environment Committee may be approached,” he said. The meeting decided that any overlapping area that existed on ground should be clearly demarcated. For such an area, the best rehabilitation measure could be to develop a common facility such as biodiversity parks there. Further, it was held that the process of preparation of rehabilitation plan be further expedited and any difference of calculated figures of key factors should be resolved with the FIMI shortly. |
