Mussoorie, July 1

Ray of hope for dilapidated Drona Hotel in Doon
Renovation proposal by GMVN under PPP mode on the cards

Dehradun, July 1
The precious commercial property, one-and-half acre Drona Hotel, which is situated on the main Gandhi road, in the centre of the city, is in a dilapidated state. The proposal of renovating it on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode had been doing the rounds but nothing concrete was done till date.

New hopes have rekindled once again with the Managing Director, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), Dr Pankaj Kumar Pandey, exhibiting firmness on executing the proposal. He has taken GMVN employees who had been opposing this proposal for all these years to task for hurting the interests of the organization.

He said, “I asked the employees about any other solution to this issue than to get Drona renovated on the PPP mode. Since we have no choice but to go with the proposal, I have cautioned the employees not to oopose it any more.”

He said he had assured the employees who worked with the hotel that none of them would be fired from the job as they feared that they would lose job when a private company would take over the Drona Hotel.

“Now after having taken care of their concerns, they too have been told not to feel agitated on this issue. They have taken the message well and have now agreed to it,” he said.

According to sources, the opposition from the political front too is posing hurdles in moving forward this project. Those who had been misusing the hotel for a stay by their supporters for free are certainly not happy to see the building slipping out of their control. It is the gross misuse of the rooms and the building which had been responsible for the bad state of infrastructure and rooms.

The setback to revenue because of free stay further led to the damage of the premises infrastructure. The walls and ceiling are cracking. The paint and whitewash has chipped off due to seepage. Doors have swollen. In the rainy season, the rooms get wet. The dining hall is gloomy with substandard chairs and tables and insipid snacks.

No decent tourist wants to stay in this place, which is otherwise hugely pricey for occupying a big chunk land and that too at the prime location of the city.

Besides several agitations against giving it under the PPP mode, the building had been in legal wrangle with another party, who claimed the land as its own. Pandey, however, showed confidence that soon a proposal would be sent to the Secretary, Tourism, in this regard.

Mussoorie residents irked by potholed roads
Municipal Council, PWD blamed for delay in repair
Ajay Ramola

Mussoorie, July 1
Residents of Mussoorie are an unhappy lot at the damaged conditions of most of the roads in the hill town due to apathy shown by the Municipal Council and the Public Works Department.

Most of the roads have been damaged to such an extent that the residents and tourists are finding it difficult to tread on them fearing risk of physical injury. The daily commuters are also angered at the delay in repairing the roads that require immediate attention.

The residents of Hussain Ganj lamented the fact that the road in their area have not been repaired for the past four years despite repeated reminders to the Municipal Council and ward member of the area Kedar Singh Chauhan.

One of the residents of the area said they had been forced to use the road for the past four years but the ward councillor of the area has still not cared to visit the area.

Beena, another resident, was of the view that due to the damaged road, a woman had fractured her leg a few days back.

The road from Picture Palace to Landour Bazaar has also not been repaired by the PWD. The residents also rued the fact that the department had neglected the road for the past one year and failed to work on it despite giving assurances in the senior level official meetings held in the past.

PWD officials said fearing the onset of monsoon they had delayed the repair work as it could affect the job and were waitng 5-6 clear days so that the work could be completed without any hindrance.

Speaking on the issue of road at Hussain Ganj, ward member Kedar Singh Chauhan said the tenders for the repair of the road would be called within a week and the work would begin soon. With the monsoon round the corner, the chances of the work beginning soon remained remote this year.

Tribune News Service

Haridwar, July 1
Family members of three "Jayrins" (pilgrims) who have been arrested in Saudi Arabia during the Umra pilgrimage, have urged the Indian government to take up the issue with the Saudi government.

Haridwar-based Naseem Qureshi, Kari Mubarak and Bijnore resident Kari Aarif were detained at Saudi airport last month on charges of finding drugs in their luggage bags.

A total of 20 zayrins were in the pilgrim group of which seven were of suburban Jwalapur, Haridwar, out of which three were detained on the charges of carrying banned substances in their bags.

As the other members of the pilgrims returned last night, the family members of Naseem and Kari have urged the government to intervene in this matter.

Hazi Naeem Qureshi, one of the touring members, said one of the tour agents had handed out bags to these three in which the packets of banned substances were found.

Qureshi held the travel agent as the main culprit who put drugs in the bags of innocent pilgrims and travellers which they sold in Saudi Arabia at exorbitant prices.

Agent Aarif, resident of Amroha, has been missing though no case has been lodged yet by the aggrieved family members.

The family members pointed out that they had wanted peaceful solution of the detention and been in touch with Indian and Saudi Arabia Embassy officials.

In view of the arrest of Jwalapur pilgrims, Haridwar parliamentarian Harish Rawat has also enquired about the incident with the Indian Embassy and Saudi Arabia consulate based in New Delhi.

Talking to TNS, Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Mohan Joshi said as the matter was of high level, with detention in foreign land through proper official channel only communication could be made.

He added that the higher authorities had been informed about the matter and assured the delegation of the affected family members accompanied by people from different sections of the society, including Hindus, of full support in this regard.
