Diarrhoea breaks out at Vikas Nagar
Chandigarh, July 1
Patients and attendants sit in an ambulance. The outbreak of diarrhoea in the Vikas Nagar locality of Mauli Jagran claimed one life here today, with several others being hospitalised. Residents blamed contaminated drinking water supply and raised slogans against the authorities, following which the police and a team of doctors visited the spot.

Two rape accused flee, 2 policemen booked
Mohali, July 1
Two accused in a rape case fled from custody at the Sohana police station on Friday night. The authorities today booked two policemen, munshi Hem Raj and constable Ram Murti, under Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC.

Summer vacation extended by week

In the wake of the heatwave, the UT Administration has extended the summer vacation for pre-primary and primary classes at all private and government schools by a week.

No Duronto to Amritsar from Sept 11
Chandigarh, July 1
With a lukewarm response to the much-hyped Duronto Express between Amritsar and Chandigarh seven days a weekthe train will not be run from September 11. With people in Punjab and the tricity demanding stoppages at Ludhiana and Jalandhar, the Railways has decided on a super-fast train to Amritsar from September 11. Then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the train in the 2011-12 Railway Budget and the train was launched on August 24 last year.

Several villages in the Kandi area, adjoining Chandigarh, are facing shortage of potable water. The inhabitants of villages starting from Karaundewala village, located on an undulating hillock in the Jyantri Majri block, to Perch-Seonk villages are forced to fetch water from other sources, as the water supply of the public health department is not regular there.

Hottest June in last six years
Chandigarh, July 1
June this year has been the hottest in the last six years as the city received meagre rainfall making the tricity region the driest in the past 10 years. As per the records available with the local met department, the city received only 3.8 mm rainfall last month.

Another sleepless night for Mohali residents

Outages at night continue to haunt the residents of the town. The worst affected are the residents of Phase VII here. The area witnessed an eight-hour power cut last night leaving the residents fuming. They were left with no other option, but to spend the night in the open.

Health scenario to get a major overhaul: MCA chief

While the report of a four-member committee headed by Dr N K Ganguli on the Ethical Guidelines for Medical Education and Clinical Practices is ready to be submitted, 20 new medical colleges, including nine in the public sector will be opened this year.

Woman killed in mishap

A middle aged woman was run over by a truck on Aggarsain overbridge in Ambala City this afternoon. The woman died on the spot and could not be identified. She was on foot when a truck ran over her. The truck driver managed to flee.

Woman drugged and robbed
Chandigarh, July 1
A 40-year-old woman was robbed of her jewelry after allegedly being intoxicated at the Government Multi Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. The woman, Sarla Devi, a resident of Daddu Majra, had come to the hospital for the delivery of her daughter-in-law when she was allegedly drugged and robbed.

2 booked for sending objectionable e-mails
Chandigar, July 1
Two persons were booked under IT Act for sending objectionalable mails. In the first case, a woman resident of Chandigarh alleged that Mohit, whom she did not know, threatened her on the mobile phone and also passed comments via email. The police has registered a case under Sections 506 and 509 of the IPC and 66A of the IT Act 2000 at the Sector 34 police station.

Thieves once again struck at a house in Sector 16 yesterday and decamped with gold jewellery worth several lakhs.

Chandigarh, July 1
Two incidents of thefts were reported across the city today. A resident of Pushpak Society in Sector 49, reported that thieves had stolen one gold set, two gold bangles, one pair gold tops, one pair silver pajeb, one watch, one kitty set, one silver set, one gold coin and cash Rs 47,000 from his residence in between June 27 and 30. The police has registered a case under Sections 380 and 454 of the IPC at the Sector 34 police station.

2 cheating cases registered
Chandigarh, July 1 The UT police today registered two separate incidents of cheating here. Lakhinder Singh and Parminder Beer Singh, both residents of Sector 4, alleged that Dr Major Singh of Sector 68, Mohali, entered into an agreement with them on November 4 last year for the purchase of a piece of land. They alleged further that he produced fake signed documents of complainants in back date (that is November 3) last year and sold land to another person.

Local tennis player Manjot Singh along with Eklavya of Kolkata won the doubles event during the recently concluded AITA (national ranking) tournament organised at the LK International School, Bawana, Delhi. Around 100 tennis players participated in this all-India level tourney.
