Fatehgarh Sahib, July 1 The decision was taken in a meeting held between heads of various departments and the Chief Minister at Punjab Bhawan yesterday. Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, general secretary, SAD, also attended the meeting. While addressing mediapersons here today, Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra said he had briefed the Chief Minister about the promises made by political leaders during the elections and the difficulties being faced by residents of Sirhind. He said the Chief Minister called the heads of all departments and approved various projects. He said Sirhind town and adjoining colonies would be fully covered under the pure drinking water supply and sewerage scheme for which Rs 30 crore has been earmarked. "A new modern bus stand having all facilities will also come up on the GT road. It will be constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore," he said. To upgrade the existing infrastructure of power sector, including replacement of old wires, transformers and other electronic equipment, Rs 13 crore has been sanctioned for the electricity department. An amount of Rs 9 crore has been sanctioned for the beautification of Sirhind choe. He said a co-operative house would be constructed at Fatehgarh Sahib and all co-operative offices would operate from one building. The Chief Minister has directed to allot land for a gaushala in Sirhind town. A national-level sports stadium would be constructed at Sirhind on 10 acres of municipal land at a cost of Rs 7 crore, he added. "Aam Khas Bagh will be developed as a tourist place and the hotel building will be converted into a circuit house. Besides, various other projects were approved during the meeting. |

Industrial effluent water discharged in the open
Dera Bassi, July 1 "Stink emanating from the water has worsened the situation. Residents are fearing an outbreak of water-borne diseases," said PC Aggarwal, a local resident, while pointing towards a pool of dirty water at Focal Point here. Aggarwal claimed that he had made several complaints to the authorities, but nobody bothered to visit the area. Another industrialist said the sewerage line was blocked. "As the sewerage system remains choked most of the time, water has started flowing onto the roads," said the industrialist. |

Ambala, July 1 The police has sent the body to the Civil Hospital for an autopsy. A case has been registered against the driver. In another incident, a body of an elderly person was found in a canal near Naniola village this morning. The body could not be identified. The body has been sent to the hospital. Meanwhile, another body of an elderly woman was found on the GT road near Kalka Chowk this morning. |

Dera Bassi goes the green way
Dera Bassi, July 1 NK Sharma said Punjab Chief Minister had envisaged special schemes for the growth of industries in the state, including the single-window clearance system. Ravinder Singh said for the benefit of the industry, the board had deputed an assistant environmental engineer in each regional office as a scrutiny officer on all working days to receive applications from industries. He added that the board had also started an "Online Consent Management System" so that the industrialists could apply online. He appealed to the industrialists to operate their effluent/air pollution control devices to save the environment and rivers from pollution. Dr Babu Ram, secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board, urged the industrialists not to discharge any effluent into rivers and nullahs. Samarjit Goyal, senior environmental engineer, said more than 2 lakh saplings would be planted by various industries/institutions this rainy season. Hospital not in pink of health
Kalka, July 1 They alleged that only one doctor catered to 500 to 600 patients at the OPD everyday. Sources said two doctors had already been transferred. There were no surgeons in the centre. They added that orthopaedics surgeon was transferred two years ago while another surgeon was transferred six months ago. There is an eye specialist in the health centre, but he is on deputation. It seems that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the problem. The plight of patients has failed to move them. Despite the fact that the casualty building was constructed years ago, there is no casualty ward. The hospital has an outdated X-ray machine and needs an updated digital X-ray machine. It does not have a mortuary van, as a result, families of the deceased, have to hire private cabs at their own. The patients have urged the higher authorities to provide ultrasound facility in the health centre. |

Woman drugged and robbed
Chandigarh, July 1 The incident occurred on June 27 and the case was registered only today after the woman regained consciousness and the police recorded her statements. In her statements to the police, Sarla Devi, said that she was sitting outside the gynaecology ward where her daughter-in-law was admitted, when a woman began talking to her. The woman then offered her a glass of juice. After drinking the juice Sarla Devi fell unconscious and was then admitted to the same hospital. She regained consciousness today and narrated the incident to the police. She reported that the woman stole a pair of gold earrings she was wearing. Inspector Ram Gopal, SHO, Sector 17 police station, said they had scrutinised the CCTV footage of the hospital for further clues and had sent the blood samples of the woman to the CFSL to examine the nature of the substance that was added in the juice. “Nothing is visible in the CCTV footage as narrated by the complainant. We are investigating,” he said. A case under Section 328 (causing hurt by poison) and Section 379 of the IPC had been registered. |

Theft at house
Panchkula, July 1 The incident came to light after the owner of the house, Mukesh Goel, returned to the house at 3 am and found the locks broken. He immediately informed the police which initiated the proceedings. Mukesh had to spend the night in a park of the locality. As per information, Goel along with his parents, wife and two sons, had gone to Karnal to attend a wedding function. The police suspects that the thieves were in the house from 12 noon till 4 pm and decamped with about 180 to 200 gm of gold, including two bangles, three chains, besides silver items weighing more than 2 kg. They also stole a camera, mobile phone and other valuables. |

Chandigarh, July 1 A case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and120B of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 3 police station. In a separate case, Gurpreet Singh, who is working at SCO number 166, second floor, Sector 37-C, alleged that Nirmal Singh, resident of Hallo Majra, had taken Rs 4 lakh cash from him for getting him a plot at Hallo Majra. Chandigarh, July 1 Mohali team lost their first eight wickets in their first innings on a total of merely 2 runs. Local bowler Gurinder Singh played a spoilsport for Mohali after taking 4 for 80 while Abhilash Sharma joined him after claiming Earlier, the Chandigarh team after resuming from their overnight score of 477 runs was bowled out on the total of 517 runs in 108.2 overs. City lad wants to make mark in world of cricket
Chandigarh, July 1 Gundash Veer Singh, a former student of Government Model Senior Secondary school at Sector 19, represents the Haryana state and has added many feathers to his cap. He was adjudged as the best performer for Haryana during the last Cooch Behar trophy, where he scored two brilliant debutant centuries. “My grandfather is a real inspiration. The last Cooch- Behar trophy was among the greatest tourneys I have ever played. I have scored two centuries, including 100 runs and 106 runs innings. At present, I am undergoing practice sessions to polish my skills and looking forward to perform my best in the upcoming major tournaments,” said Gundash. “I have just completed my school and now entering a new world. I will be facing some tough opponents and competition in the world of cricket,” he added. The cricketer also represented the Haryana state in the last Ranji season. “Although our team failed to perform well but I hope this session we will manage to prove our mettle. The infrastructure is good and hopefully the team will make full use of it,” he said. His grandfather, Surinder Singh Baiji, general-secretary of Chandigarh Cricket Association, also expects that him to achieve the blue cap one day. “He is watching the game since his childhood.
