Fire at Jammu university
Jammu, June 9 Though initial reports claimed that answer sheets of BA Part-I were gutted in the fire, the university authorities claim otherwise. The PRO of the university along with the office of the Controller Examinations have refuted any claims of answer sheets being destroyed in the fire, they maintain that while some question papers were destroyed, all other papers are safe since everything was locked. The exact cause of the fire is still not clear. While divisional fire officer Raj Kumar Raina said it could be the work of an arsonist with deliberate intentions to set the examination hall on fire since there was no evidence of a short circuit since the main board of electricity did not indicate towards a trip in case of a short circuit. The security personnel present on the campus at the time of the fire saw smoke emerging from the examination hall no. 113 on the top floor and immediately informed the Fire Department. Since there were answer sheets kept in the hall, the fire brigade personnel instead of using water to douse the fire used powder to cut the fire. Though the answer sheets were saved, a burning cupboard kept in the room required some effort to be cooled. The fire brigade personnel took half an hour to control and put off the fire completely. |

Public distribution officials, private dealers booked
Tribune News Service
Jammu, June 9 Reports said acting on an information concerning the misappropriation of government ration by the CAPD officials, Rajouri, the Crime Branch conducted an investigation into the matter. It was found that a huge quantity of ration lifted by the CAPD officials from the FCI godown, Rajouri, had been shown fictitiously issued to some private ration dealers much in excess to their authorised quota. The CAPD officials have misappropriated the excess quantity of ration shown fictitiously dispatched to dealers after hatching a criminal conspiracy and the carriage charges of this excess ration to the tune of crores of rupees have also been drawn by preparing fake and fictitious bills. The CAPD records read that private ration dealers of the far-off areas, whose carriage charges were very high, were fictitiously shown issued ration beyond the prescribed quota, which was fixed as per the status of population of each dealer and the said ration was supplied under the APL, BPL and AAY categories at different subsidised rates fixed by the government for each category. Moreover, the records of the Tehsil Supply Officer, Rajouri, disclosed that not only excess ration was issued to the private ration dealers, but also double withdrawals of carriage charges were made for several months from January 2009 to March 2011. However, the excess quantity of ration beyond prescribed quota was shown issued to the private ration dealers mostly under the APL category. The omissions and commissions on part of the CAPD officials and private ration dealers, prima facie, suggests the commission of above-mentioned offences as they A case under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, 120-B of the RPC r/w Section 5 (2) PC Act Svt.2006 has been registered. |

Even with the lowest number of candidates appearing for the entrance test this year, Leh recorded 23 applications for political science and 20 for commerce subjects. Bhadarwah followed the footsteps of Leh with maximum applications going for political science and English along with MA Education and M.Ed. With maximum applicants ticking main Jammu University campus as their first choice, the administration is gearing up for a rigorous selection process. Dr RD Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, said, “With the main campus offering the best faculty and infrastructure to the students, everyone wants to come here. Firm approach needed to tackle anti-national activities: Ex-minister
Jammu, June 9 Gupta pointed out that the mentors of cross-border terror coupled with their agents never wanted smooth functioning of the democratic process in this troubled state. It was with great sacrifices and efforts of the security forces coupled with cooperation of the nationalist people that a peace-like situation was developing in the state. It was an irony of fate that to appease the secessionist sentiments, certain ruling leaders have been talking for curtailment of powers of the forces tackling the menace of terror. “Even the removal of troops from such areas is being pleaded although there was no change in thinking and approach of the mentors of militancy”, he said, adding “There is no letup in the infiltration bids and smuggling of the weapons as also that of subversive material is still going on”. He advocated for firm approach to deal with the anti-national activities as also the elements behind the moves aimed at creating a sense of insecurity among the common man, especially the elected representatives of the villagers, working at the grossroots level. |

Centre working under influence of corporate lobby, say traders
Jammu, June 9 The CAIT and JCCI representatives also lambasted the government for implementing “flawed” Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, claiming that it would wipe out small traders. “The Centre is working under the influence of corporate lobby and its policies are aimed at appeasing big corporate houses in the country. The Prime Minister should constitute a Special Task Force comprising senior officials and trade representatives to study the ground realities of Indian retail trade, its core problems and suggest remedial measures,” Praveen Khandelwal, CAIT national secretary-general, told reporters here. He mocked at the government policies, saying it was facilitating entry of MNCs and big corporate houses into retail trade at a time when 70 per cent people of the country were earning merely Rs 20 a day. “The government has to change its policies and a review commission should be set up to review all sorts of Acts, laws and rules governing the retail trade,” Khandelwal said, adding that the government should study in depth the implications which arose in countries where MNCs were operating their business models. Lashing out at the government for adopting “anti-traders policies”, JCCI president YV Sharma criticised the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), saying “By imposing the FSSA, the small traders will be wiped out from the trade and that will create unemployment in the state.” He said under the new Act, formalities for making fresh licences and renewal of licences had increased manifold, thereby creating a sense of insecurity among members of the business community. The JCCI chief demanded that the Act should be kept in abeyance for five years and till such time the anomalies, disparities and stringent provisions of the Act should be amended in consultation with stakeholders. |

Scholarships elude sportspersons
Jammu, June 9 Sources said after utilising the available funds in conducting activities at district and state levels, the DYSS had approached the state government to sanction an additional grant so that scholarships would be awarded to the outstanding sportspersons. This was for the first time that the state government had delayed the process of sanctioning an additional amount for the DYSS, which otherwise it releases every year in favour of the department. As per data available, the DYSS needs around Rs 15 lakh to award scholarships to sportspersons. Surprisingly, the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports has yet to prepare a list of sportspersons who will receive scholarships. “The department was never been in such a precarious situation,” said one of the officials of the DYSS. “Every year, the government allotted us additional funds much before the closing of the financial year but that was not the case this year and that is why the department is grappling with shortage of funds,” he added. “Not only the sportspersons but their parents are also raising questions over the delay in awarding scholarships,” the official claimed. “As compared to previous years, there is a considerable increase in the activities conducted by the department this year, which resulted into more consumption of funds at the disposal of the DYSS,” he added. As per rule, the medallists (outstanding sportspersons) will get a scholarship of Rs 10,000 while participants in various competitions will get a scholarship of Rs 1,750. Meanwhile, Jai Pal Singh, Director, Youth Services and Sports, said: The department is very much aware of the shortage of funds but we are hopeful that the matter will be sorted out.” “The department is making all efforts to apprise the government about the necessity of additional funds to award scholarships,” he added. “There is nothing serious about the issue as we are hopeful of getting funds from the state government soon,” said the Director of the DYSS. It is pertinent to mention here that a record 83 medals, including 16 gold, 28 silver and 39 bronze, have been bagged by the state contingent in the 57th edition of the National School Games recently. |
