Fourth bridge on Tawi by Nov
Jammu, June 8 The construction started in December 2010 at an estimated cost of Rs 93 crore to ease the pressure on the existing three bridges on the river, which are facing huge traffic problem every day. The bridge will provide an alternative route to the people moving towards Akhnoor, Muthi, Domana, Poonch and Rajouri districts. “By November we will complete the project and so far out of the 10 spans, 9 have been constructed. The last one will be completed after the monsoon,” said MM Gupta, Managing Director, J&K Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC). As per the statistical growth report, the city is expanding only in two directions - Jammu-South (towards Pathankot side) and Jammu-West (towards Akhnoor side). Consequently, there is a lot of vehicular movement on Satwari Chowk-Vikram Chowk-Jewel Chowk-Canal head junction road corridor. The new bridge on the Tawi (towards Nehru market side and Bhagwati Nagar side) will play a key role to ensure successful diversion of traffic to the bridge. The bridge will be connected with the Ware House from Satwari via Belli Charana and Bhagwati Nagar. A four-lane bypass road from Bhagwati Nagar to Akhnoor Road near TV Towers
at Muthi, having a length of 13 km and connecting villages of Seoura, Akalpur, Lower Barnai and Pounichak, is also proposed. “Traffic scenario in the city presents a chaotic situation. There are regular traffic jams at various locations, including Shalamar, Jewel Chowk, Rehari Chungi, Vikram Chowk and Bakshi Nagar. We hope that this new bridge will provide some relief to the people from huge traffic jams, which further consume so much time, too,” said Kapil Soni, an NGO owner. Traffic congestion is emerging as the biggest problem as over 50,000 vehicles are added every year to the already overcrowded roads of the city. The total road length in the city is 704.22 km and per kilometre density of vehicles is 574. The situation has been worsening with the addition of cars, tractors, motorbikes, trucks, matadors and buses. |

Water & power shortage: PDP supporters block highway
Jammu, June 8 Interestingly, Mehbooba Mufti a couple of days ago had addressed a series of public meetings in Jammu city when temperature was hovering around 45 degree Celsius, but her party leaders today preferred to highlight public grievances only in the Gandhi Nagar area. Meanwhile, according to a handout issued by the party, continuing its campaign against acute scarcity of drinking water and unprecedented power crises in Jammu city, a massive protest was organised in the Gandhi Nagar area. The demonstration was held under the leadership of RK Bali, district president of the party. The demonstration started from the party office and passed through different areas of Gandhi Nagar. Slogan-shouting PDP activists also disrupted traffic on the highway for some time. PDP leaders, while addressing the workers, said the party had launched a statewide campaign against the poor supply of drinking water, electricity and price rise as the Centre and state governments had miserably failed to ensure regular and adequate supply of essential commodities, besides checking the skyrocketing prices. They said the common man was finding it difficult to survive, but the government was least concerned. They said these days when the temperature has already crossed 45 degree Celsius, long power cuts and inadequate supply of drinking water had resulted into resentment among the people as a result of which they are forced to come on roads. Prominent among those who addressed the rally included Rangil Singh, Thakur Balbir Singh, Daman Bhasin, Ved Mahajan, Shanti Devi, Fallail Singh, Hussain Ali Wafa, RK Bali, Suram Singh and others. |

Mughal Rally set to test nerves of steel
Jammu, June 8 The race for victory will unfold over June 30 and July 1. The track once used by legendary Akbar through the sylvan Pir Panjal range of the Western Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir will now witness automobile giants locked in a battle for the top spot. The event promises to give tourists a new high, taking them beyond the Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam route to a different, offbeat circuit, exploring untouched areas, including the Sinthan Pass, Pir Ki Gali, Bafliaz and the picturesque medieval Mughalsarai at Aliabag. The strategy for the competition is being meticulously planned. Mahindra Adventure and Tata Motors have gone all out to rope in top motor sport champions. The Mughal Rally has two categories - Xtreme and Enduro. While Xtreme is all about outright speed, Enduro follows the TSD (time-speed-distance) format. For Rally Xtreme, the three automobile majors are fielding champions of competitive motorsport in the country for an all-out ‘speed and skill’ contest. The residents complain that the PHE Department has failed to meet their daily requirement for water. Things have come to such a pass that most have been forced to buy packaged water from the market at exorbitant rates. There is a sense of discontent amongst the residents, who feel the apathy on part of the authorities is unwarranted. The residents have sought immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to find a solution, else they would be forced to take to the streets and stage protests. Also, they have threatened to block the national highway if their demands are not fulfilled soon.
