For now, no to international flights
Chandigarh, June 8
Chandigarh Airport will not have any international flights, at least in the immediate future. Senior officials in the Ministry of Defence (MoD), New Delhi, have clarified that the local airstrip was a base for the Air Force.

MC refuses to impose house tax
Chandigarh, June 8
Cutting across party lines, members of the house tax assessment committee today unanimously rejected the proposal of the imposition of house tax and enhancement of commercial tax in the city. During an interaction with the media here today, committee chairman Sat Parkash Aggarwal said it was decided that neither house tax would be imposed in the city nor would commercial tax be revised as directed by the UT Administration.

The financial reserves of the Municipal Corporation (MC) are declining due to the untimely receipt of the annual grant-in-aid from the UT Administration for the last three years. As per the budget reports of the corporation for the past three years, neither the aid nor the matching grant of revenue receipts has been released by the Administration.

Mohali couple arrested for stealing software
Chandigarh, June 8
The cyber cell of the UT police today arrested a Mohali couple for copying a software developed by a company and selling the duplicate to dealers abroad, causing losses to the company. Acting on the complaint of Sanjay Aggarwal, a Manimajra resident, the police today arrested Rajat Basin and his wife Taranjot, residents of Phase VI, Mohali.

Sukhna Lake has turned into a virtual swamp with boats getting stuck in the muddy waters today. A fractional number of the already dwindling number of boating enthusiasts shouted for help and the staff at the lake could be seen running into the water puddle and dragging the boats to the shore.

Students of Institute for Blind, Sector 26, have come out with flying colours yet again in the Class XII examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board, the result of which was declared today. The school has achieved 100 per cent result, with a majority of students scoring above 70 per cent. While Vikram Goyal stood first with 81.6 per cent, Poonam and Amod Sharma shared second position with 81.3 per cent. Abhishek Kumar got 80.5 per cent and stood third.

10 cabins gutted; material worth Rs 1 cr destroyed
Panchkula, June 8
Firemen douse flames at a showroom in Sector 15, Panchkula, on Friday Material worth nearly Rs 1 crore was destroyed in a fire that broke out at 10 cabins in a showroom the Sector 15 market here today. The shops were completely gutted. Shopkeepers alleged that no one responded to calls made to the fire brigade office. When the police informed the fire brigade, it took half-hour to reach the spot.

Anti-encroachment drive: 105 challaned
Chandigarh, June 8
The municipal corporation enforcement wing today removed encroachments from Shastri Market in Sector 22. During the drive, 105 challans were issued to violators. The enforcement team seized tables, counters, chairs, folding beds, pharies, chicks, cylinders, rehires, toys, trunks, ply, plastic pipes and juice machines. The officials also impounded a Tata Sumo, a Zen car and an Indica car.

Girl child found abandoned
Mohali, June 8
A girl child was found abandoned at Sector 69 here today. According to reports, the three-month old child was wrapped in a cloth and was abandoned on the premises of a private hospital in the area.

Two cases of cholera surface in Mani Majra
Chandigarh, June 8
Two children suffering from cholera were admitted to a hospital in Panchkula. The two have been identified as Rupesh (4), a resident of from Mauli Jagran, and Anita (2), a resident of Indira colony, Mani Majra. Gomti Prasad, Rupesh’s father, said his son had been vomiting for the past few days and doctors had diagnosed him with cholera. Residents of Mani Majra have been complaining of muddy water supply for the past many days.

A sniffer dog of the UT police helped nab two thieves within hours after a house belonging to a Class IV employee of Panjab University was ransacked on the campus today. The dog "Micheal" went to another house in the neighbourhood immediately after he sniffed items in the ransacked house.

Independent candidate Amar Chand from ward number 34 with his supporters during a roadshow in Patiala on Friday With election campaign for the 50 municipal wards of the Patiala ending today evening, the candidates have started door-to-door canvassing. During one to one interaction with the residents of their respective municipal wards, the contestants were mainly emphasising that once elected, they would be accessible to the people and would ensure that the civic problems being faced by the people are addressed on priority basis.

Desilting of distributaries, minors initiated
