Banur, June 8
Though Banur was developed as an educational hub and it caused development and increase in population but the absence of a bus stand here harass the commuters. People are bound to stand in the open in summer and winter seasons. There is no arrangement of sitting and that of drinking water arrangement where the commuters board buses for Rajpura, Patiala, Chandigarh and for other cities of Punjab and Haryana.

Lack of bus stand facility has been causing accidents because commuters were bound to stand near the main highway and wait for the buses. Bhulla Singh of Buta Singh Wala village serves drinking water here at free every summer season. He told that he has been serving drinking water to commuters for past 30 years and the government had not made any arrangements of sitting and drinking water here.

He informed that some long route buses do not stop here due to which commuters face problems.

Some students of different educational institutions and people of different villages told that in the absence of bus stand commuters stand in the open sky in this summer season and face heat. They said that commuters’ rush was increasing day by day due to the set up of educational institutions and industrial units but the government had not taken any step to construct bus stand according to the need of people.

Meanwhile, the SDM Lakhmeer Singh said that there was no proposal to construct bus stand at Banur yet. Residents of Banur and that of other adjoining villages have demanded the construction of bus stand and facility of sitting and drinking water as soon as possible for the facility of commuters.

Patiala, June 8
With election campaign for the 50 municipal wards of the Patiala ending today evening, the candidates have started door-to-door canvassing. During one to one interaction with the residents of their respective municipal wards, the contestants were mainly emphasising that once elected, they would be accessible to the people and would ensure that the civic problems being faced by the people are addressed on priority basis.

Here, it is pertinent to mention that though as many as 254 candidates are in the poll fray for the 50 wards yet the main contest is between the Congress and the SAD-BJP combine. Before the conclusion of the election campaign at 5 pm today, the candidates of the Congress, Akali Dal and BJP addressed election gathering and also took out road shows.

Meanwhile, in an interesting development, Patiala Mayor, Ajit Pal Singh Kohli, whose residence lies in municipal ward number 45, has put up hoarding of Akali candidate from this ward Amarinder Singh Bajaj. Amarinder is  son of Patiala Improvement Trust chairman Inder Mohan Singh Bajaj. However, all of sudden, Kohli is taking keen interest in the election campaign of Bajaj much to the surprise of the Akali leaders. What assumes significance is that even Bajaj is also projecting himself as one of the front-runners for the post of Mayor and still Kohli has extended his all out support to the campaign of his bete noire, Amarinder, said a senior Akali leader, preferring anonymity.

Khatra's comeback to benefit Akali Dal in 20 wards

Tribune News Service

Patiala, June 8
With former Youth Akali Dal vice-president Satbir Singh Khatra’s comeback into the SAD, the prospects of the SAD-BJP candidates in as many as 20 municipal wards seems to have brightened. Khatra’s induction is important mainly because of the fact that there are 20 municipal wards in the Patiala Rural assembly segment and Khatra had contested the assembly election from this constituency as an Independent, pocketing 20530 votes out of the total 1,27,930 votes polled.

Majority of the Akali leaders are of the opinion that in wake of the good enough number of votes polled to Khatra, his return to the party fold is bound to strengthen the party and will help the SAD-BJP candidates secure more votes in the civic polls.

Notably, Khatra, who was vice-president of the Youth Akali Dal, had left the party after he was denied assembly ticket from Patiala Rural. He contested the election as independent and remained at third place. But what was significant was that he managed to get 16.05 per cent votes.

In the meanwhile, Khatra, along with his hundreds of supporters, today, campaigned aggressively in Patiala. Addressing the various elections gathering Khatra said that vote in favour of the SAD-BJP combine would ensure that the royal city of Patiala is put on the path of the fast track development for the next five years.

“Discard the Congress candidates, who comes out of their palatial houses only during the election time,” he said, while launching scathing attacks on the Congress.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate from ward number 24 Inderjit Kaur Nippy, has sent a complaint to the returning officer GS Chahal (SDM, Patiala) that her rival SAD-BJP nominee, Harsimrat Kaur Chhanga, has hired a tri-cycle rickshaws and is announcing through public address system that Congress nominee has withdrawn from the election in her favour.

“The announcement schedule was chalked out so cleverly that it could not be counteracted, as it was made just before the close of campaign today. Inderjit has sought an indepth enquiry into the matter and action against Harsimrat for violating the code of conduct,” the complaint reads.

Low turnout at athletics meet
Two out of 10 go for National Youth Championship
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 8
The recent trails conducted by the Chandigarh Athletics Association for selecting a team to participate in the upcoming National Youth Championship, to be held at Bangalore on July 13 and 14, witnessed a low turn out.

A total of 10 athletes in two categories marked their presence during the trials and out of which only two athletes were selected to represent the city in the upcoming national games.

As per officials of the association, the ongoing exams and off season period are the main reasons behind the low turn out.

“This is a lean period and moreover with exams ending just a month back many players prefer to take a break. However, this is not good for the sport. But we are helpless. In the youth national, the participation remains less throughout the year,” said a senior official.

When asked if the no-gradation policy of this competition is the reason behind the low turn out, he added, “It is among one of the reasons. But a tournament is like an examination for a player. This is not the first time that we are receiving a cold response for the competition. After the trials only two athletes cleared the selection criteria. They will represent the city in the nationals,” he said.

Adding further, “The situation will not remain the same throughout the year. We are conducting state games in July followed by north-zone and All-India edition. There we will receive a huge participation like every year. Later, we will organise competitions in each category and the top position holders will represent the city in the other nationals,” said the senior official.
