Check lifestyle to keep hypertension at bay
Obesity, sedentary life prime culprits; 50 pc cases undetected
Sushil Goyal
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 17
In the fast paced life of contemporary times, one area that suffers neglect is one's own health. Even as medical science has progressed, there is a tendency to look over the shoulder when it comes to being aware about the health hazards, unless we are shaken out of our reverie by some complication.

As the World Hypertension Day today, the occasion provided an apt moment to take stock of the threat it poses to people's health, the factors leading to it as well as the precautions that can be taken to avoid it.

A local doctor Ashok Kumar Goyal, who is MD (Medicine), has urged the people to check their lifestyle to keep their blood pressure (BP) under control to live a long life.

Talking to this reporter here today, Dr Goyal said there were several factors which were responsible for the increasing incidence of hypertension (high blood pressure) in society.

These factors included the changing lifestyle, industrialisation, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, excessive use of two-wheelers and other vehicles, less physical activities and exercise, and changing eating habits (like junk food and fast food).

Sharing his experience, Dr Goyal said a large number of youths, from the age of 25 years onwards, were visiting the doctors to get examined for blood pressure. Earlier, people of the age of 45 years and above, were found to be suffering from hypertension.

He also said there were about 50 per cent undetected cases of hypertension. These patients did not visit the doctors till they faced severe health related complications. This was the reason why most people were being diagnosed at a later stage, he added.

Regarding the adverse affects of hypertension on people, Dr Goyal said it damaged organs like the kidneys, heart and the arteries of the brain. He asked the people to protect themselves from the ill-effects of hypertension. People should not ignore the symptoms of blood pressure. Besides, they should also perform regular exercise, avoid obesity and discard junk food, he added.

According to information available, cardiovascular diseases claim 17.3 million lives every year worldwide. Besides, high blood pressure contributes to about half of all CVD deaths. Besides, high blood pressure affects 33 per cent of men and 30 per cent women in India.

Doctors also say people should not be afraid of hypertension as it can be controlled by adopting measures like giving up smoking, opting for a healthier lifestyle, awareness about hypertension, regular blood pressure check-ups and consultation.
