Cong’s Mahra elected Rajya Sabha MP
Dehradun, March 30 Soon after the counting of votes in the presence of Uttarakhand Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal and observer for these election Radha Raturi, Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha election DP Gairola presented the certificate to Mahendra Singh Mahra A staunch supporter of senior minister Harish Rawat, Mahra's victory was a culmination of joint efforts by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat. "I am thankful to the central leadership and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for reposing faith in me," said Mahra, soon after the result was declared. When all was going smoothly with almost all Congress MLAs had voted by afternoon, hunt began for five non-BJP MLAs who had already extended the support to the Congress during the election of the Speaker and trust vote. Finally, the members, Haridas, Surinder Rakesh of the BSP, Mantri Prasad Naithani (Independent), Dinesh Dhanai (Independent) and Pritam Panwar of the Uttarakhand Krant Dal (P), arrived with the Chief Minister to cast their vote, giving much-needed relief to the Congress managers. Hell bent upon extracting their pound of flesh, the coalition partners from the Progressive Democratic Front and two BSP members are believed to have asked for the inclusion of Dinesh Dhanai in the Cabinet. "We have already conveyed our demand to the Chief Minister and will continue to put pressure on the Congress in case it refuses to fulfil our demand," said
Naithani.
Bahuguna congrats him
Dehradun, March 30 In a statement, he said the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been claiming that the state government was not enjoying the confidence of a majority of legislators. “The vote of confidence, the election of Speaker and the success in the Rajya Sabha elections have proved that the Congress-led government has absolute majority and will function for its full five-year term,” he said. He also hoped that the BJP would work as the constructive opposition for the well-being of the state and its people. Uttarakhand Congress spokesman Surendra Kumar said the victory of Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Mahra in the Rajya Sabha election was the victory of democracy. In a statement issued today, Surendra Kumar said the BJP did try to use money power to influence the Rajya Sabha election in Uttarakhand but failed in its efforts. He said the Rajya Sabha poll outcome had also hinted that the Congress was comfortably in the saddle in the state. He said the verdict of the Rajya Sabha election had also given a message that negative politics had no place in Uttarakhand. Suryakant Dhasmana, vice-president of the Uttarakhand Congress, hailing the Congress victory in the Rajya Sabha election, said the victory had put a full stop on the propaganda by the BJP about the fragility of the Congress government. Meanwhile, Congress workers resorted to bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets at Congress Bhawan. Former Mayor Manorama Dobriyal Sharma, Jasveer Rawat, Rajeev Jain, Yameen Ansari, Noorhasan, Lakhpat Butola and Mahesh Sachdeva were prominent among present in Congress Bhawan. |
Supporting MLAs give CM nervous moments
Dehradun, March 30 In the morning when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Indira Hriyadesh arrived with Independent MLA Harish Durgapal, it appeared that the members of the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) would vote with the Congress. But that was not to be, as by the afternoon, when almost all MLAs had voted, it transpired that the five MLAs had upped the ante and held negotiations with the Chief Minister for a Cabinet berth for Dinesh Dhanai. The two BSP MLAs also decided to support the Independents and the UKD (P) member, who had formed the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF), and succeded in pressuring the Bahuguna government. “The BSP leaders, Haridas and Surinder Rakesh, have expressed their willingness to join the front. In fact, we are keen to increase the strength of our group to seven as the number seven has connotation with power,” said Mantri Prasad Naithani, a Cabinet minister. However, Naithani denied that his group had resorted to pressure tactics by deliberately delaying casting of vote. “We raised genuine demands with Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and reminded him of his commitment to us for lending support to his government. We will continue to do so from time to time. As we are Independent MLAs, we have an obligation to people,” said Naithani. Interestingly, while Harish Durgapal, who is also a member of the PDF, was not seen with other members of the group, as he had voted early, the non-political front also got support from BSP MLAs Surinder Rakesh and Haridas, who had already set a discordant note by opposing party president Dr Meghraj's choice of Sarvat Kalim Ansari as the leader of the BSP in the House. |
