Blood Banks only on paper in state
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, March 23
Easy accessibility to safe blood continues to be beyond the reach of hill people where government hospitals continue to be without the services of Blood Banks and functioning blood storage units.

To reduce maternal deaths due to severe bleeding/haemorrhage in Uttarakhand that has the high maternal mortality rate, the setting up of Blood Banks at all Community Health Centres is essential.

The CHCs in Boradi, Rudraprayag, Champawat and Bageshwar were especially selected, as these areas had reported high incidence of maternal deaths.

While the Central Government has been prompt in sanctioning the setting up of Blood Banks in all these places, four years after these were sanctioned, the Uttarakhand Health Department has failed to get them going.

“The National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) has already delivered the equipment and the finances on time, but the state has not delivered on manpower and other mandatory infrastructure required for the Blood Bank,” said Dr Meenakshi Uniyal, Director, Blood Safety.

Health experts say setting up of Blood Banks will continue to remain on paper in the state unless the Health Department does not start the task of recruitment of staff.

“The manpower shortage problem needs to be looked into seriously, if quality care has to be given to the patients and the Blood Banks need to be fully functional,” said Dr KC Pant, senior physician, Doon Hospital.

Significantly, even the blood storage centres at Joshimath, Kichha, Bhawali and Karanprayag are also non-functional due to the absence of manpower.

The blood storage centres receive screen blood from mother storage centres like Dehradun. The blood from mother storage centres is transported with the help refrigerated storage van.

“With the help of NACO, we are committed to setting up blood banks in all districts of the state, but unless we get manpower, it will be difficult to run these. We are increasingly looking at hiring contractual staff and also running the CHCs on the public private mode,” said Dr J P Bhatt, Director General Health and Family Welfare.

After 17 years, Navratras to last 10 days
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, March 23
After a gap of 17 years, the Navratras, which commenced from today, will be of 10 days as compared to nine days of the fast.
This happened in 1995 when the Navratras were of 10 days. While today the Chaitra Navratras began they will conclude on April 1 on Ram Navami, the day of birth of Lord Rama.

As 2012 is a Leap Year, in Hindu calendar a day of ‘Shraddh’ gets lessened while an additional day is added in the Navratras.

The fifth Navratra day will be observed for two days i.e on April 27th and 28th which is known as ‘Panchami’. Noted astrologist Pundi Prateek Mishrapuri said the fasts and rituals observed during the Navratras have deep significance and those who feed five young girls on the fifth Navratra got their sins burnt.

Meanwhile, on the first day of the Navratra, the devotees thronged temples from the wee hours of the morning after taking a holy dip in the Ganga. Devotees lined up at the shrines of Mansa Devi, Chandi Devi, Maya Devi, Sureshwari Devi, Mata Vaishno Devi, Siddhpeeth Kalipeethadheeshwar and other temples and ashrams in the city to perform prayers.

Kalash filled with the Ganga water were also kept at temples and homes too.

People also observed fast while many will observe it for 10 days. As the Navratras will conclude on Ram Navami day, at many places in the city, Ram Kathas have also begun, where kathavachaks from Ayodhya, Mathura and from the city itself speak on the life and teachings of Lord Rama.

Employees strike work in three companies
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, March 23
It seems taking the agitation route in the Industrial Estate of SIDCUL in Haridwar is becoming the norm, as in just a week only, strike in three companies has been witnessed.

While it was VIP industrial firm which faced the total boycott of work as employees demanded increase in wages and perks, now two other firms, Rockman, subsidiary unit of auto giant Hero Honda, and Satyam are witnessing lockouts in their production factories.

Demanding hike in wages, arrears, dearness allowance as well alleging exploitation against factory management, both the firms' striking employees staged a protest jointly. Sant Kumar, representative of the workers' union, said that mass exploitation of workers is being done in SIDCUL, as factory owners easily influence police and Labour Commissioner, as a result of which the voice of the workers is being curbed.

He said that 8 workers were removed from Rockman Company on no valid grounds, but when other workers staged a protest factory, the management assured of their reinstatement but still no action has been taken in this regard. "While Ashwani, Happy Singh and Mukesh of Satyam firm complained that initially they tried to have table talks with the factory management, they never gave time to us. As a result of which, we had to resort to this agitation mode, though they realise that stopping production work is no better option but term it the only way to make the management accept their demands," said Sant Kumar.

When contacted both the firms' HR officials refuted the allegations made by the striking workers, adding that it seems that some workers have misled them, otherwise company offers the best of the wages and other remuneration to its employees as compared to other SIDCUL firms.
