Fire spreads panic in P’kula Sec 11
Panchkula, March 20
A skylift firetender from Chandigarh douses flames at a showroom in Sector 11, Panchkula, on Tuesday Ill-preparedness of firefighting system came to the fore as local fire tenders failed to douse a fire for about an hour that gutted showroom No. 44 in Sector 11 here this afternoon. It was only after a skylift fire tender and two water boosters and one fire tender were brought from Chandigarh that the fire was brought under control. It took more than two hours for 11 fire tenders from the town and Chandigarh to extinguish the fire.

3-yr RI for injuring policeman
Chandigarh, March 20
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced a Mohali resident to three years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for injuring a traffic head constable on duty.

Parking rates may double
Chandigarh, March 20
The paid parking rates in the city are likely to be doubled. The issue will be tabled in the finance and contract committee meeting scheduled on March 22. As per the proposal, the parking rates for all kinds of vehicles will be doubled by the Municipal Corporation.

Youth killed in collision of motorcycles
Chandigarh, March 20
A youth was killed and another injured in a head-on collision between two bikes at Mauli Jagran late this evening. The mishap occurred near a temple in the area and both were rushed to the PGI where the doctors declared one of them brought dead. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Shubh Kishan, a resident of Manimajra. The other injured has been identified as Sushil Kumar. The police said both the bikes clashed near a turn. A girl who was riding pillion on one of the bikes escaped with minor injuries.

Civic body forgets old sanitation projects

Old garbage-segregation projects of the Municipal Corporation are lying in the cold storage awaiting implementation while the fresh ones are ready to be undertaken with zest by the authorities. A classic example is the pilot project aimed at segregation of garbage in the markets which was mooted by the UT Administration two years ago.

It’s been two years when two families lost their breadwinners. The sensational murder of two security guards, Gurdial Singh and Sucha Singh, in Industrial Area in 2010 had wrecked two families for life. The families derived solace from the fact that the guilty had been sent behind the bars. With a local court acquitting all the four accused of the murder yesterday, both the families have been left aghast.

DC wants traffic flow to be eased
Mohali, March 20 Having woken up to the problems in the town, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Varun Roojam today gave directions to officials concerned to take steps to regulate traffic flow. UT Admn, pvt schools cross swords

In one of its last desperate attempts to get the Right Of Children To Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act implemented, the UT Administration has advertised 470 vacant seats in various city private schools. Claiming that they had to step in as a major chunk of the 25 percent seats reserved under the Act were still lying vacant, the department has invited applications from parents of eligible children latest by March 27.

CM to inaugurate seminar on Guru Granth Sahib

HC rap for school education board

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has held the Punjab School Education Board at fault for obstinate and adamant behaviour in a retirement benefits case and has ruled that the board’s conduct borders on contempt of court. It has also directed the Principal Secretary (Education) to convene a meeting for deciding the issue.

The report on Ruchika's expulsion from Sacred Heart Convent School, prepared about two years ago, is yet to be submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Taking up the issue, the Bench of Justice SS Saron and Justice M Jeyapaul directed the Administration to submit the report.

Harbhajan to lead Punjab in T20 meet

Leg-spinner Harbhajan Singh will lead the Punjab team in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Cricket Trophy (T20), to be held in Mumbai from March 23. The Punjab team have topped the North Zone league and will take on Assam in the prequarterfinals. The team will leave for Mumbai tomorrow.
