Daylight murder stuns city
Two migrant women killed in cold blood with a cricket bat
Ludhiana, March 20
Usha (40) and her daughter-in-law Punam (20) were brutally murdered with a cricket bat in broad daylight in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar here today. While Punam died on the spot, Usha died while being taken to a hospital. The killers brutally attacked both women on their heads with the cricket bat. The family basically hails from Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh.

20-yr-old youth brutally killed on birthday
Ludhiana, March 20
While planning to celebrate his birthday in the evening with family and friends, Sunny (20) could have never thought that it would be his death day, too. A resident of Street Number 6, Shimla Colony, Sunny was brutally murdered by four unidentified persons near his house, today evening.

Ludhiana, March 20
An unidentified body was fished out by the police from a manhole near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar here today. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gurpreet Walia said the hands and feet of a middle-aged man were tied and thrown into the non-functional manhole.

Employee dies in mishap, family protests
Ludhiana, March 20
Shailender Kumar (40) was crushed to death by a truck while it was reversing at New Rajguru Nagar here today. Family members of Shailender and a few employees staged a protest against the alleged apathetic attitude of employers outside a gas agency.

Draw of liquor vends on March 28
Ludhiana, March 20
The draw of liquor vends for the next financial year will be held on March 28. The Excise and Taxation Department has invited applications for the same.

Distributors fleece consumers
Ludhiana, March 20
Gas distributors are fleecing consumers by selling additional products while getting new connections. Consumers are forced to buy products like gas stoves, lighters, utensils etc after getting a new connection. Apart from this, some gas distributors are also selling products beyond LPG. General goods like sugar, flour, pulses are being sold by some of the LPG distributors.

Parents have a ball at family reunion function
Ludhiana: A family reunion function was held at Everest Play Way and Nursery School, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Park, Miller Ganj, Ludhiana, here. Prof Harlal Singh, former director, Punjab School Education Board, was the chief guest on the occasion. Rajinder Sharma, president, Association of the Punjab School Education Board Affiliated Schools, Punjab, (regd), welcomed guests.

Health workers meet DCP
A deputation of Universal Human Rights Organisation and Women Justice and Equality today met DCP Ashish Chaudhary for dismissing the case registered against nine workers of the Contract Multipurpose Health Worker Union at Division Number 2 police station. The deputation told the DCP that the state government and workers had reached a compromise, so the case should be dismissed.

Woman foils robbery bid
Jagraon, March 20
Showing a good presence of mind, a woman living in a farmhouse situated just outside Madaarpura village near Sidhwan Bet foiled a robbery attempt by some unidentified youths last evening. The woman was alone at the time of the incident.

Pashu Palan Mela from today
Ludhiana: Pashu Palan Mela will be held at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, on March 21 and 22. Dr VK Taneja, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, said four awards would be conferred on progressive farmers, including Harminder Singh Sandhu for buffalo dairy farming, Harbhajan Singh for fisheries, Jatinder Singh for cattle dairy farming and Lakhwinder Singh for piggery.

Bus stand’s police post in charge suspended
Ludhiana, March 20
Dharmender, chowki in charge, bus stand, was suspended, allegedly for misbehaving and assaulting a pregnant woman and her cousin. According to available information, Ramanjit was going to drop his cousin Jashan, who is pregnant, to the bus stand, as she was to go to Chandigarh. On reaching the bus stand, a security guard asked Ramanjit to pay parking fees. Ramanjit said since he had come to drop his cousin, he would not park the car in the parking lot. The security guard reportedly began arguing with Ramanjit and the security staff called the police.

Residents a divided lot
Ludhiana, March 20
Residents of B-Block, Rishi Nagar, are a divided lot over iron gates, being put up by certain residents in the area for security purpose. While many of the B-Block residents feel that by putting up the iron gates, the High Court's directions will be violated. Besides, permission by the authorities - the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) - had also not been taken for putting up the gates. While others maintained that since crime incidents were increasing, installing of gates at all the entry and exit points would provide safety to the area residents.

Sutlej Club elections on March 25

Not giving enough time to the candidates for throwing extravagant and lavish parties, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari finally announced March 25 as the date of elections during the annual general meeting of the Sutlej Club here today. With elections to be held within five days of its announcement, the duration is short, feel certain members of the club. Now that election code of conduct has been imposed, those contesting will not have much time to "lure" the members by throwing parties or organising get-togethers.

Seven ration depots raided
Ludhiana, March 20
Takings serious note of the complaints filed by a few people, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rupanjali Kartik today raided seven ration depots. Six out of seven depots were found closed during the raid. All these depots are located in Geeta Colony of Jagirpur village.

Woman booked for killing husband

The police today booked a woman, Reeta Rani, her paramour Sonu and his friend Satish Kumar (both residents of Ludhiana) under Sections 302/201IPC on the charges of murdering her husband Kashmir Singh at Khaira village.

Three thieves were nabbed by the Salemtabri police at a checkpost near Karabara Chowk here today.
