Judicial probe ordered
Faridkot, March 19 The district and sessions judge, Faridkot, has ordered a judicial inquiry and deputed the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) to investigate into the circumstances leading to the death of the jail inmate. For the alleged offence of killing his wife, Lakhwinder Singh was in jail since July 2011 when he was arrested by the Moga police. Five year back, Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Bilaspur village of Moga district, was married to Amandeep Kaur of Ferozepur. In July 2011, Amandeep Kaur died under mysterious circumstances. The police closed the case, presuming it to be a case of natural death. However, on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased woman, the police arrested Lakhwinder Singh for killing his wife. Though in this dowry-murder case, the father and mother of Lakhwinder Singh were also named as accused, they got anticipatory bail. Nazar Singh, the father of the deceased jail inmate, said he had met his son on Sunday in the jail and assured him about his bail in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. “But today in the morning, when we got the information from the jail authorities about my son committing suicide, it was unbelievable,” he said. Paramjit Singh Sandhu, assistant jail superintendent, said Lakhwinder Singh committed suicides
minutes after all the inmates in the jail were released from their barracks on the open premises of the jail in the morning. He said due to inadequate security staff in the jail, no one noticed Lakhwinder Singh hanging himself with a piece of cloth. “For 17 blocks in this newly-constructed jail, we need at least two jail guards all time to keep a watch on the movement of the inmates. But due to the shortage of security staff, we have only one jail guard each for these 17 blocks in the jail,” said Paramjit Singh Sandhu, the assistant jail superintendent. |

Farmers protest against UPA govt
Moga, March 19 The farmers protested outside the office of the district magistrate and blocked the national highway for a few minutes. Sukhdev Singh Kokri, general secretary of the BKU, accused the UPA government of adopting anti-farmer policies due to which hundreds of farmers were committing suicides across the country. The activists of the BKU alleged that the growth in farm practices in Punjab has become stagnant. Expressing concern over the rising cost of inputs in agriculture, the protesting farmers said that the minimum support price being offered on their produce was short of the actual costs leading to huge burden of debts. “"We are working hard to produce grains for the whole country but in return, the union government is slowly washing its hands off the subsidies with each passing year. Other grants being given to the farmers too are being withdrawn,” commented Angrej Singh, a protesting farmer. Meanwhile, Kokri demanded that the union government write off institutional loans, give a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of farmers who took their own lives after being burdened by debt along with a government job to at least one member of the aggrieved family, fix the MSP of crops as per the Swaminathan report by adding at least 50 per cent profit in cost inputs and all agricultural loans at the subsidized rate of four per cent. The protesting farmers also rejected the water policy being adopted by union government and the proposal of inter-linking the rivers across the country saying that it was against the interests of the states.

Hospital staff go on strike seeking security
Malout (Muktsar), March 19 The hospital staff went on strike for almost an hour from 10 am to 11am and demanded a police post inside the hospital. The doctor in question, Sunil Bansal, an ultrasound specialist, was allegedly roughed up by some hooligans, who had come to the hospital after causing injuries to two persons, including a woman at around 11:30 pm last night. As per the information, about five youngsters in an inebriated condition, were celebrating the victory of India against Pakistan in the Asia Cup cricket tournament at Surja Ram Market. When the people residing in the locality objected, the youngsters allegedly thrashed them. The injured, namely, Pinky and Sanjeev Kumar, went to the hospital, where the accused again thrashed them and also misbehaved with Dr Sanjeev Bansal. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the hospital staff hurriedly called the police, which came to the spot and controlled the situation. Meanwhile, this morning, the entire hospital staff decided to lodge a protest in this regard and demanded a police post in the hospital. "We want a permanent solution as the hooligans come and misbehave with us. This has become a routine exercise. It is not possible to treat the patients at night. If the administration fails to provide us with security, we will be unable to treat the patients late at night," said a protesting doctor. Meanwhile, Dr Gurdeep Bhullar, Civil Surgeon, Muktsar, who had come to Malout to pacify the protesters, assured them of taking up the matter with the higher-ups to get a police post in the hospital. Dr Gurdeep Bhullar said, “This is not happening for the first time. In the past too, similar incidents have taken place and now the doctors want a permanent solution to this. They have said that if the administration fails to provide them with security soon, they will again go on strike.” However, the police said that they had not received any formal complaint in this regard. The investigation officer, Tarlok Chand, who had gone to the hospital, said, “Yes, a scuffle took place at Surja Ram Market late last night and again at the Civil Hospital, but they have reached a compromise. And the doctors have also not lodged any formal complaint in this regard.” |
PSEB’s move to check cheating in exam welcomed
Abohar, March 19 Speaking to the mediapersons here today, a former member of the PSEB Academic Council, Parwinder Singh said the PSEB had restricted the number of co-member of each flying squad to two but some were carrying four-five persons with them to storm the examination centres. This caused panic, he pointed out. He suggested that only officials of high integrity and a clean record should be designated to head the flying squads in consultation with the District Education Officer concerned. Notably, Parwinder Singh had set a record by unearthing about four hundred cases of copying in the past. He appreciated the installation of CCTV cameras at the examination centres and hoped its ambit would be enlarged by arranging for more resources by next year. This, he observed, would deliver the much awaited results besides ensuring transparency. |
