Malwa region has more representation in ministry
Bathinda, March 14 The region had five ministers in the previous council of ministers before Manpreet Singh Badal's exit from the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Besides the Chief Minister and the Deputy CM, others included from the Malwa in the ministry this morning were Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Tota Singh, Surjit Kumar Jyani, Sikendar Singh Malooka and Surjit Singh Rakhra. While Parkash Singh Badal represents the Lambi constituency of the Muktsar district, his son Sukhbir has returned to the assembly from the Jalalabad segment of the Fazilka district. One of the reasons for the higher representation to this region was that the supremacy of the SAD in Malwa has been restored in this election as the party wrested many of its traditional seats from the
Congress that had virtually swept the polls here in 2007. The Bathinda district that did not have even a single cabinet minister in the previous council, this time has two — Janmeja Singh Sekhon and Sikendar Singh Malooka. The newly carved out district of Fazilka also has two ministers, including the Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh and the BJP nominee Surjit Kumar Jyani. Parkash Singh Badal has taken special care to provide a ministerial berth to those who were giant killers. Janmeja Singh Sekhon, who defeated the PPP chief Manpreet Singh Badal even after migrating from Ferozepur to the Maur constituency and also Surjit Singh Rakhra who defeated Raninder Singh, son of the state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, in the Samana segment have been made ministers. The other ministers, Parminder Singh Dhindsa represents Sunam in the Sangrur district and Tota Singh won the Dharamkot constituency of Moga. Ferozepur that had in the previous cabinet two ministers, Janmeja Singh Sekhon and Surjit Kumar Jyani, before the Fazilka district was carved out of it, has no representation in the ministry this time. Sukhpal Singh Nannu (BJP), chief parliamentary secretary, this time lost the election from the Ferozepur (Urban) constituency.

New express train may link major cantonments
Sriganganagar/Abohar, March 14 The link is considered most significant for the defence forces besides the traders and commuters. Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said today in his budget speech that the new train would be run via Abohar-Fazilka. It is a surprise gift as none had expected this. A cross-section of social activists including Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee member Hanuman Dass Goyal, Consumer Movement chairman Satpal Khariwal and Rail Road Seva Samiti general secretary Gurprasad Behal hailed the move. Notably, Mamata Bannerji had last year announced a passenger train on the Bathinda-Abohar-Fazilka route but it awaits clearance from the Lucknow-based Railway Safety Wing that has not been able to send its engineers for inspection of the track due to a delay in appointing the 125-strong staff at five rural
stations. Well-placed sources in the railways had confirmed last week that Rajasthan Rural Development Minister Vinod Kumar Chaudhary had approached the Central Government to get sanctioned the Hanumangarh-Kota daily express train via Jaipur-Degana. The train had initially been introduced as a holiday express and had periodical extensions. He felt buoyed over its approval in the rail budget today. The Rail Road Seva Samiti feels that by listing Sriganganagar-Suratgarh passenger train in the list announced today, the Railways have brightened hopes of completing gauge conversion project that had been languishing for more than two decades. However, Lok Sabha member Bharat Ram Meghwal and Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha general secretary Ravi Sharma regretted that the North Western Railways was planning to degrade Jaitsar as a halt station only. This will be opposed, they said, adding that gauge conversion should be completed by releasing additional funds immediately. Only after this will it be possible to link Jaisalmer with Udhampur, they added. |

MLA Jain hails Moga-Delhi link by Shatabdi Express
Moga, March 14 Jain said it was a long-pending demand of the local people to connect the Moga town with a direct railway link to the national capital. "I have been putting up this case before the railway ministry for the past three years", he
claimed. Jain said he met the railway minister twice in this regard and demanded to start a daily Shatabdi or express train between Moga and New Delhi but keeping in view the financial viability, the Shatabdi Express has been extended to Moga only for two days.
Jain said the railway minister has assured him that if the trial of extension for two days meets the minimum requirements of financial viability then this train would begin its daily trip from Moga from next year. Meanwhile, the president of the local Citizens' Council, Dwarka Bansal has also welcomed the decision of the railway ministry to start this train for two days. |

Contempt of court
Bathinda, March 14 Surinder Pal Bansal had come up with the issue of illegal plying of vehicles in the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery at Phulokhari. Since January last year, he has been pursuing issue with the local transport authorities but could not get to any constructive conclusion. He highlighted that the vehicles ferry workers of the refinery. All such vehicles have to pay motor vehicle tax depending upon their categorisation and many of these vehicles should have permits to ply in Punjab. “These vehicles do not have permit to ply in Punjab, which dents state government’s income. This add to the woes and dent income of Punjab operators who are unable to pay for the installments vehicles bought on loan to be run as taxis,” he reasined. Bansal claimed that local taxi operators are losing business to these vehicles that are plying illegally on hire without valid permits. When all his pleas fell on deaf ears, he filed a writ petition (13989) on August 4 last year in the Punjab and Haryana High Court mentioning that many vehicles are plying in refinery without valid permits. On the same day, the petition was disposed of and the court of Justice Alok Singh (J) directed District Transport Officer (DTO) Bathinda to take action on the representation within 60 days of the order. “Citing the court orders, we requested DTO Bhupinder Singh to take action, but nothing was done. Thereafter, we filed a case of contempt of court wherein the DTO appeared before court on March 13,” Bansal said. The court has fixed the next date of hearing on May 17. |
