Train passengers on way to Amritsar were a harried lot today following a repair work near Mannawala on the Jalandhar-Amritsar route. The passengers were either forced to take a longer detour via Pathankot or alight at Jalandhar railway station to board a bus to Amritsar.

The Amarpali Express, which reached Jalandhar station at 10 am, was to reach Amritsar at 11.45 am. But the train took the Pathankot route instead of going via Beas and it reached Amritsar two hours late.

Similarly, passengers coming from Delhi to Amritsar on Shan-e-Punjab had to get down at Jalandhar as the train did not go further. The harried passengers had to wait for over an hour for the Dadar Express to reach Amritsar.

Mehak, a Jalandhar resident, had to wait for hours at the city railway station with her two children for a train to Amritsar. Another resident Ruby was with her family at the station waiting for a direct train to Amritsar. Confusion prevailed at the railway station throughout the day.

Officials said the trains were not going towards Amritsar following change in tracks and repair of electrical signals near Mannawala. It was around 7 pm that the work was over and the trains started going in normal course.

Station superintendent RK Behl said a public notice in this regard was already published in newspapers a day before. “Passengers may not have read the information. But we have been answering all inquiries.” Some tracks had got cleared at 4.30 pm today and the Dadar Express was allowed to pass directly, he added.
