Dera case adjourned till March 27
: The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Harjit Singh on Saturday adjourned the case of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim till March 27. Representing the case on behalf of the state government, advocate Maninder Singh Sidhu presented facts of the case in the court. Complainant Rajinder Singh Sidhu's lawyer Jatinder Roy Khattar highlighted the issue of the actual date of incident during which the dera chief allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs.

HC notice to Punjab, PSERC
: The State of Punjab, the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) and other respondents were put on notice by the High Court on a PIL challenging the action of approving the filling of 2,251 posts by the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) and the Punjab State Transmission Corporation Ltd (PSTCL). The notice by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover came on a petition filed by Baljit Singh of Patiala district. The petitioner said a study conducted by a consultant agency appointed by the PSPCL itself had revealed that both PSPCL and PSTCL were over-staffed.

Partap Singh BajwaExtend Shatabdi till Jammu: Bajwa: Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa has urged the Union Government to extend the Delhi-Ludhiana Shatabdi till Jammu via Pathankot. Bajwa, who had raised the issue in the Lok Sabha too, said the Shatabdi, which had been commissioned recently, ran between Delhi and Ludhiana via Rohtak, Haryana and Sangrur. He said as another Shatabdi (the Swarn Shatabdi) was already running till Ludhiana, the Delhi-Ludhiana Shatabdi could be diverted to other areas.

Traders protest FDI proposal: Responding to the call for protest by Swadeshi Jagran Manch, activists of the Beopar Mandal, farmers, transporters, vegetable and fruit sellers and chemists staged a dharna against the proposed FDI in retail business. Activist Krishan Sharma said they would soon be launching a massive agitation in case the government did not budge from its stand on the issue. Former state Minister Tikshan Sud was also present on the occasion.

300 students get offers at job fest
: Over 300 students were selected by various companies during a job fest organised by the local Lala Lajpat Rai Group of Institutes. Over 1,000 students participated in the event organised for the students of B.Tech, MCA, MBA, BBA, BCA and other streams. The participating companies included Maruti, Reliance, Volkswagen, Idea, Connect, IDBI, Tech Mahindra and Airtel.

Highway blocked:
Residents of Safidon town blocked the Jind-Panipat highway for about three hours on Saturday in protest against the police inaction in connection with beating up a clerk of a lawyer here on Friday. The bloackade was removed after the police officials assured action into the matter.

Following a complaint of Rajesh Kumar, a wholesale trader of Jassur, near here, the police today lodged a case of thrashing and looting. The complainant was stopped by some unidentified persons at Bhadwar and thrashed by them yesterday. The accused reportedly snatched his gold chain and Rs 12,000 cash.

Three killed in mishaps:
Three persons were killed and five others sustained injuries in two accidents in the Ramnagar area of Nainital. Pappu Singh (32), a resident of Ramnagar, and Sanjay Saini (35), a resident of Moradabad, were killed when they were run over by a vehicle near Haldua village in the Peerumdara area. The duo was going from Ramnagar to Thakurdwara. In another mishap, Ranvir Singh Rawat (45) was killed and five others were injured when the tempo they were travelling in overturned near Haldua village.

Nainital DM reviews works: Nainital District Magistrate Nidhi Mani Tripathi has ordered that officials must keep in mind the problems being faced by people and their requirements while preparing proposals for various schemes in the next financial year. She said laxity in development works and the delay in action on public complaints would not be tolerated. Tripathi said this while reviewing various development schemes at a meeting held in Haldwani on Friday afternoon. Addressing officials of the Health Department, she said emphasis must be laid on making programmes launched for the eradication of various diseases a success. Tripathi expressed her annoyance at the potholes on the Haldwani-Nainital road, barely six months after it was metalled.

Man’s body found in Nainital: The police has found the body of a man in the Do Gaon area of Jyolikote near Nainital. According to information, he was mentally unstable and used to ask people to give him a knife so that he could kill himself. A wire was found tied around his throat. It is being assumed that he strangled himself. He is yet to be identified.

Elephant menace in Ramnagar area: A group of pachyderms has been causing mayhem in Himmatpur Dautiyal village of the Ramnagar area of Nainital over the past one week. According to the villagers, a group of five elephants has been destroying standing crops in fields, particularly the wheat crop. They have urged the Forest Department to intervene and take long-term measures to check the menace.

Miscreants damage school property: Some miscreants allegedly damaged the property of a primary school and fled with some articles in the Lal Kuan area of Nainital district. The stolen items include articles that were being used to run the midday meal scheme and certain iron implements. Police investigations are on in the matter.
