Naked body found in hotel room, police does no rule out possibility of foul play

Jalandhar, March 13
Mystery shrouds the death of a Canada-based NRI whose body was found in a hotel near Company Bagh chowk this afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Harinder Paul Singh, a resident of Madara village near here. The police said the naked body of the NRI was found in room no. 222 of Hotel Ramada.

The SHO, New Baradari police station, Beant Juneja, said after receiving information, a team of police officials reached the hotel and found Harinder lying in the room with white froth oozing out of his mouth. The police suspected that the NRI died due to overdose of some drug.

The NRI had allegedly taken an overdose of 'aphrodisiacs' drug that led to his death, police sources said. The police has also recovered some medicines and a liquor bottle near the body.

Manager of the hotel said that the NRI, his driver and a few other persons were consuming liquor in the room. The police is also interrogating the deceased’s driver, Kuldip Singh.

Neresh Dogra, Assistant Commissioner of Police, said as per the circumstantial evidences, the police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. The exact cause of the death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem, he said.

The police has started the investigations after taking the footage of CCTV cameras from the hotel. The police is also working on various theories and has not ruled out the possibility of foul play.

Money behind death?

A few days ago, the NRI held a press conference at Punjab Press Club regarding a fraud in mutual funds. He had claimed that his father had invested Rs 10 lakh in mutual funds in Jalandhar, but the money was fraudulently withdrawn from the bank account. The police said the NRI held a meeting with bank officials on Monday and dispute was reportedly sorted out.

Hindus from Pakistan demand citizen rights

Jalandhar, March 13
Reiterating their demand for Indian citizenship, nearly 260 Pakistani Hindu families residing in the city for the past 10 to 15 years submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner here today.

The representatives said though the Indian government had enacted a law that Pakistani Hindus putting up in the country for over seven years be granted Indian citizenship after relevant inquiries, they were yet to be declared Indians.

Leaders of the delegation Surinder Kumar Billa and Kala Ram said they had even moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court which gave a decision on September 20, 2010, in their favour, but they were yet to get the Indian citizenship and other legal rights.

Raj Kumar, a Pakistani, said since he got married in India and his children had Indian birth certificates, they had no problem in going to school. “But others whose children were born in Pakistan have to run after local MLAs for attestation.”

There are other problems as well. “Since we do not have any ID proofs such as ration card and voter ID cards, we cannot have bank accounts or even mobile SIM cards in our names. I have a SIM card in the name of my brother-in-law who resides in the city,” said Raj Kumar.

The delegation said the Rajasthan government had given citizenship rights to over 11,500 Pak Hindus residing primarily in Jodhpur, Bikaner and Ganganagar districts. “If the Rajasthan government can grant Indian citizenship, why not the Punjab government?” he questioned. The delegation has also sent copies of the memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister.

The students, a majority of them from the undergraduate classes, complained that the college authorities were taking a lot of time in clearing their dues ahead of their final examinations beginning from March 17. It is only after the no dues certificate by the college authorities that the students become eligible to get their roll numbers for the final examinations.

A majority of the students also complained that the college authorities were harassing them and were asked to pay hefty fine.

Such was the chaos that right from the entrance of the college all that met the eye was girls waiting in queues and standing in groups for getting their work done.

A student from B.Sc (computer science) said: “Instead of sitting at home and studying for the exams, I have been making rounds to the college to get my no dues cleared. I have already paid a fine of Rs 180, but the college authorities today informed me that I have to pay Rs 2,500 more.”

A parent of a student who had come along with her daughter to the college lambasted the college authorities for making them wait for long. “It is for the second day that we have come to the college for getting the no dues certificate and after waiting for hours, we had to return again. This is harassment of students. As they know that the exams are beginning from March 17, they should put additional staff on duty to help the students,” he added.

Principal of the college Rekha Kalia Bhardwaj said many parents approached her with complaints, but some students keep their parents in the dark about their lecture shortage.

“We have to adopt such disciplinary action so as to reform the students. The students don’t face any problem in getting no dues certificates. However, some mischievous students are in a habit of making a hue and cry,” she added.

The post Chief Administrator, Jalandhar Development Authority, is also lying vacant following retirement of IAS officer Parveen Kumar. The charge has been vested with Sarvjit Singh, who also is the Chief Administrator of GMADA.

The district may also get another ADC as there is only one ADC against the two sanctioned posts. During transfers of officials ahead of polls, ADC (G) GS Khaira and ADC (D) Sarojini Gautam Sharda were shifted and both the charges were given to Praneet Bhardwaj.

In the municipal corporation, there has been a problem of accommodating too many top rank administrators posted during promotion and transfer rounds just days ahead of Assembly polls. Besides, Commissioner BS Dhaliwal, BK Gupta is serving as Additional Commissioner, DP Bhardwaj is Joint Commissioner, Gurbinder Randhawa and Ved Vyas are posted as Assistant Commissioners.

The building branch also has too many officials, including an STP and two MTPs. There are three Deputy Controller (Finance) and Auditing in the Jalandhar MC, including Ravinder Singh, VK Kapoor and Rajpal Singh.

It’s raining coins of faith at Khwaja Pir's mazaar

Chaheru, March 12
It has been raining coins of faith at the mazaar of Khwaja Pir. Situated on the busy Jalandhar-Phagwara highway on the banks of Chitti Bein, drivers of hundreds of vehicles don't forget to apply breaks and offer coins at the mazaar.

Faith has overpowered not only bus and truck drivers, but all passing through the stretch. Besides coins, people offer flowers, toy planes and horses at the shrine. Driven by faith, hundreds of devotees also offer coconuts, silver and even gold ornaments to the Pir as they throw these articles in the adjoining Chitti Bein rivulet after fulfilment of their wishes.

The Chaheru Bridge, the dargah of Khawaja Pir and Chitti Bein have turned into a focal point of faith and devotion after vehicle drivers were convinced by soothsayers that increasing number of accidents could be attributed to annoyance of the Pir. Their faith and apprehensions were further accentuated as a bus fell into the river in 1981 and about 60 persons were killed. Only a few lucky ones survived, said a group of volunteers at the shrine.

Coins of denomination ranging between Rs 1 to Rs 5 virtually keep raining all day creating metallic sound in the premises as these are thrown by drivers and conductors of buses and trucks passing through the bridge. The money is collected by a group of volunteers in the shrine premises who lap up the coins immediately as these fall and collect at one place.

"The bridge has been known to be an accident-prone point. Now, the number of accidents has witnessed a dip due to the blessings of the Pir and due to construction of a new bridge on the river," said Gagandeep, one of the volunteers at the shrine. Hundreds of devotees turn up at the shrine on every Thursday to offer their prayers," said Sandip, another volunteer at the shrine.

According to a rough estimate, more than 5,000 buses and trucks pass through the bridge every day. "We prepare tea and langar for devotees with the offered money. Besides, we also organise a fair for devotees on September 15 every year," a volunteer said.

Some young boys fish out coins, jewellery, coconuts and other articles thrown into the rivulet by faith-driven devotees. "We are able to fetch up to 200-250 coconuts from the rivulet daily. People have such an unflinching faith in the powers of the baba that they even offer gold and silver ornaments into the rivulet. Once, managed to fish out a gold bangle from the rivulet," said one of the boys.
