Cong high command to decide on choice of CM
Dehradun, March 10 According to Congress sources, the MLAs owing allegiance to senior party leaders wanted their own leaders as Chief Minister. Interestingly, three party MPs are in the race for the top post. Harish Rawat, Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, remained a front runner as nearly 10 MLAs, mostly from Kumaon and two from Haridwar district, wanted him to be Chief Minister. On the other hand, the MLAs owing allegiance to Satpal Maharaj, MP from Pauri Garhwal, pressed for his candidature.
They also reportedly told Ghulam Nabi Azad that in case the party high command decided to appoint an MLA as Chief Minister, the top post be given to Amrita Rawat, wife of Satpal Maharaj. Some of the legislators also favoured Tehri Garhwal MP Vijay Bahuguna. According to Congress leaders, the high command has also been apprised of the possibility of facing two by-elections in the state in case an MP is made Chief Minister. The MP will have to vacate his Lok Sabha seat and look for a segment to enter the Assembly. Many legislators believe that the high command is trying to avoid by-election, given the prevailing political situation in the state. Among the MLAs, Uttarakhand Congress president Yashpal Arya is a front runner. He is a senior party leader, MLA and former Speaker. Under his leadership, the party won all five Lok Sabha seats in 2009 and also contested the Assembly elections this time. Harak Singh Rawat, Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, is also a young energetic leader who has been fighting his political battles boldly inside and outside the House. Indira Hariydesh, who won from the Haldwani Assembly seat by a huge margin, is another senior legislator in the race for chief ministership. She was number two in the previous Congress government headed by ND Tiwari. But the choice of the leader would depend on the decision of the party high command. |
Tibetans hold march to commemorate uprising day
Mussoorie, March 10 The Tibetans, under the banner of the Tibetan Youth Congress and the Tibetan Women’s Association, along with students from the Tibetan Homes Foundation and the Central School of Tibetans gathered at Dalai Hill to offer prayers. A one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs was also observed. Later a prayer meeting was held on the school premises where the community leaders addressed the gathering and highlighted the sufferings of their brethren at the hands of China back home. Thereafter, they marched all along Mall Road till Gandhi Chowk shouting slogans against China. Some students were seen carrying placards with slogans, “we want freedom”. The president of the Tibetan Women’s Association, Kalsang Dolma, said it was on this day in 1959 the Chinese troops suppressed the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa and forced the Dalai Lama and over 80,000 Tibetans into exile in India and other neighbouring countries. On reaching India after a three-week treacherous journey on March 30, 1959, the Dalai Lama first lived in Mussoorie in Uttarakhand for about a year. Since then the community has been observing the day to keep the flame of freedom burning among the Tibetans living in India and other countries. Dolma urged the international community to persuade China to stop atrocities against the peace-loving Tibetans. Dehradun: To commemorate the 53rd National Uprising Day, Tibetans living in exile in Dehradun, Haridwar and Saharanpur gathered at the Parade Ground to recount the sacrifices made by the Tibetans who were forced to flee from their homes in 1954. “The continued repression of Tibetans by the Chinese authorities is a matter of concern,” said Gyaltsen, Tibetan welfare officer. He said the anniversary had become symbolic for the Tibetans as the Chinese continued to follow repressive policies. “Till now, 26 Tibetans have committed suicide protesting against the Chinese regime,” he said. It may be mentioned that in 1954, scores of Tibetans had fled Lhasa under the leadership of the Dalai Lama. Tibetans and students from different Tibetan schools and members of the Tibetan Women’s Association, Tibetan Freedom Movement and the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress took out a march and raised slogans against the Chinese brutalities. The rally passed through the Clock Tower, the Hardiwar road and other important parts of the city. A memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister, drawing his attention towards the plight of Tibetans in Tibet, was also submitted to the District Magistrate. |

Modernising dist hospital labour room her mission
Neena Sharma Tribune News Service
Dehradun, March 10 Soon after joining the District Women’s Hospital a few years ago, child specialist and Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS), Dr Archana Srivastav, stressed the need to equip the hospital with an SNCU. “While working in the government sector for the past 25 years, I was exposed to the seamier side of life every day and had seen patients battling poverty. Their only hope is that the government hospitals be equipped with modern facilities. The SNCU targets critical neonatal care and being in the government sector it is both accessible and affordable,” she said. The SNCU at the hospital was inaugurated a year ago and it had proved fortuitous for Dr Srivastav, who later took over as the CMS of the hospital. Now as the head of the hospital, she has shifted her focus to strengthening and modernising its labour room. “Within the next six months, we will be able to have a modern labour room equipped with the latest medical technology. A lot of advancement is taking place in the field of scientific equipment. Though we cannot compete with corporate hospitals, with our limited resources the government hospitals can at least provide modern care to a large number of people,” she asserted. However, she says the child and maternal mortality rates continue to be the major concern in the state. “Though in comparison to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the situation here has improved, we are nowhere compared to Kerala and Gujarat,” she opined. Inspired by her father and sister to join the medical profession, Dr Srivastav says it was a deliberate decision on her part to join the government service. “In government hospitals, you are in touch with patients coming from different sections of society. There is a misnomer that the government hospitals are perpetually ailing. Yes, we too have our problems, but we are also providing healthcare to a large number of people,” she asserted. In fact, her optimism also springs from the fact that the Union government may make a sizeable increase in allocation for health in this Budget. When she is not attending to patients, Dr Srivastav loves to read. |
