Haridwar, March 3 A meeting was held today at the CCR Towers that was presided over by the District Magistrate. The candidates of all 11 Assembly segments, who attended the meeting, were apprised of the counting day procedure, norms and other aspects. The DM said victory processions post the declaration of the results had been banned as per the Election Commission’s directives. He said they had also sought cooperation from candidates in ensuring that there was no violation of law during and after the counting process was over. Personnel of paramilitary forces and the police will be deployed at the counting centres — the Roshanabad district collector administrative office and Vikas Bhawan — where EVMs have been
put up. Only those people with passes will be allowed to enter the tri-intersection outside the Roshanabad district courts. CCTV cameras have also been installed at the counting centres. Red alert will be sounded in the district from March 5 to 8.

Nainital, March 3 Chauhan said no victory procession would be allowed after the announcement of results on March 6 and no one would be allowed to disturb peace and cause damage to public property. At the same time, people would also be barred from carrying arms and ammunition and no public speech and gathering would be allowed without prior permission from the authorities concerned. The use of loudspeakers had also been prohibited and those found violating the orders would face strict action. In Almora, District Election Officer (DEO) DS Garbyal ordered that special preventive actions be taken to ensure law and order during the counting of votes. He asked government personnel entrusted with duty of counting of votes to understand the nuances of their jobs. Garbyal told the staff on vote counting duty today that they would be apprised of the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) at the training programme being held for them. He added the use of mobile phones at the centres during the counting of votes would be completely prohibited. The District Election Officers in other districts of the region have also given similar directions over the last
one week. |
Two-Day Spring Festival Inaugurated
Dehradun, March 3 Amid the beating of drums and sounds of traditional hill instruments, the Governor also released the first-day cover, issued by the Department of Posts and dedicated to Fuoli, a yellow flower known for its delicate beauty and medicinal qualities. A special festival dedicated to Fuoli flower is celebrated during the spring. Alva said the Spring Festival had gained popularity over the years. “Floriculture is a viable option for small farmers, who can earn additional income by growing flowers in poly houses. Besides growing flowers, the farmers can also take up plantation of aromatic plants in animal-infested areas,” she said. The Chief Minister stressed on strengthening the marketing system so that the farmers could get better value for their produce. Giant Gerberas in orange, yellow, white and peach colours as also Liliums, Carnation in the cut flower category and giant Cacti caught the attention of the visitors. “This flower show is so beautiful that I want to keep coming again and again,” said Veena Joshi, a visitor. Flower growers from Chanderote and Jassowal (Dehradun) and Nainital made their presence felt with their cut flowers this year too. A total of 1,358 entries have been received for the competitive part of the exhibition in which hobbyists, entrepreneurs and government institutions are participating. The results will be declared tomorrow. Amid nature’s bounty, cultural troupes from Harul and Joshimath presented traditional dances that left the visitors spellbound. “The Harul dance performed during the Bissu festival is quite robust in steps and beat unlike the dances of Chamoli, which is slow,” said Poran nath, a troupe member. A “nukkad natak” on malnutrition was also staged. Besides, more than 500 children, including physically and mentally challenged children, participated in a painting competition. |
Ailing Koshiyari admitted to Patanjali Yogpeeth
Haridwar, March 3 The veteran BJP leader’s treatment and presence at Patanjali Yogpeeth is being kept secret to avoid media and public attention. He is being treated by Patanjali Ayurvedacharyas and yoga experts. Acharaya Balkrishan, Vice-Chancellor of Patanjali University and close aide of yog guru Baba Ramdev, is himself monitoring the treatment being given to Bhagat Da. An expert team of Patanjali doctors is closely monitoring his health and medical therapy. A national BJP vice-president and Koshyari’s confidant said for quite some time he was having some liver-related problem and it aggravated during the hectic Assembly election campaigning. “As Bhagat Da was in the election campaign committee, he travelled across 13 districts of the state. This took a toll on his health. He is undergoing treatment at Patanjali Yogpeeth. Doctors have advised him full rest. He is recovering quite well and responding to ayurvedic treatment,” said a Haridwar-based social activist, who has been with the veteran leader for about three decades. People from the Kapkot region, where Bhagat Da belongs, are also visiting Patanjali Yogpeeth to enquire about his health. They brought flowers and letters of good wishes for their favourite leader. |
Two killed in road mishaps
Dehradun, March 3 The front portion of the tempo got crushed, causing serious injuries to the passengers. One of the victims, Anil Kumar, died on his way to hospital. The other injured, Uday Raj, Kamlesh, Ajay Mishra, Saurab Jain and Mahesh, have been admitted to the Roorkee Civil Hospital. In another mishap on the same highway, the driver of a minibus lost control over the vehicle and hit a biker, who died on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Shubham Chowdhry of the South Civil Lines. The police has impounded the minibus. Search is on to arrest the driver who fled the spot. In yet another accident, a bike hit two women crossing a road near Emrati village, leaving them severely injured. In this mishap, the bikers also sustained injuries. “There is urgent need of a bypass and a strict vigil by the police to check the rising accidents,” said Mahesh, a government teacher. |

Dehradun, March 3 Here at my centre, I devote my entire day for the overall development of children with mental disability. Teaching them gives me pleasure and satisfaction.” Gurleen Bindra is one of the youngest psychologists and special educator in Dehradun, who is running a counselling centre and remedial classes. For the last two three years, Gurleen is working as a special educator for differently abled children. She focuses on those with learning disability, autism, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, special children, physically disabled, slow learners and others. “We follow a psychological centric curriculum mainly based on creative activities along with the involvement of all possible specially abled educational aids,” she added. After doing her schooling from Brightlands and Carman School, partially, she did her graduation in psychology from MKP PG College, Dehradun. “I’ve also done diploma in special education for the mentally retarded and master in psychology,” she added. For Bindra, her mother and her maternal aunt are the inspiration to become an educator for specially abled children. “Both my mom and aunt are graduates in psychology. My entire family helps me to look after kids at my tution centre and motivates me to do better in educating them,” said Gurleen, who is currently pursuing B. Ed for mentally
retardation. When asked about her achievements as special educator, she said: “The day when my students first performed on stage at a cultural fest at Parade Gground last year and their performance won accolades by the audiences, it was my great achievement of my life.” Bedside her busy schedule, Bindra also loves to pen down her experiences and spend time with her students. She is also a pet lover and owns two dogs adopted from streets. Gurleen aims at highlighting the mental ability of special kids who are deprived of special education. “I’ll feel contented if I could bring slightest change in any of these children’s lives,” she
signed off. |
Colourful farewell function for HEC seniors
Haridwar, March 3 Inaugurating the event, college director Sandeep Chaudhari lighted the lamp followed by Sarswati Vandana by girl students. Addressing the students, Chaudhari urged outgoing students to make sure they give away tips to junior students as well as set high moral and work ethic standards in whichever field they go as getting only lucrative jobs should not be the only motive of professional education. Fun events and competitions like mehndi and decorating of rangoli were also held on the occasion, where winners were felicitated with prizes and certificates given. But it was the fashion show organised by students themselves which was the highlight of the function as students almost got berserk seeing their fellow college mates sashaying down
the ramp. More than 30 students participated in the fashion show, for which students had prepared for more than a week and it showed in their modelling, too. College principal Navneet Verma lauded the efforts pitched in by students and college staff, assuring of best of the facilities in the next session in the college. A pledge was also taken by juniors in the presence of seniors to study in a disciplined manner and not do any work that affects the environment as well as dignity of the college. Entire function was coordinated by Seema Sharma, Hema, Shubhangi and Vaishali. Pinky, a commerce final year student, who won quiz event, said that she feels emotional while leaving the college but wants to make it big in her career so that her name figures in the annals of the college achievers. |
Employment exchange ‘Aspiring Minds’ begins functioning
Dehradun, March 3 “Aspiring Minds Employment Exchange would access to state of the art assessment technologies and job matching to Uttarakhand with its flagship assessment AMCAT. The initiative will help extend AMCAT to graduates from degree colleges, distance learning students and diploma holders and unlock opportunities for the state,” said Koushik Chatterjee, Senior vice president, Aspiring Minds. The exchange is equipped with biometric kiosks, video monitoring and state of the art infrastructure to enable job seekers in the region to get hired based on their academic skills and competence. The exchange can assess around 25,000 students from IT, banking, insurance, hospitality and management in a year and enable hiring nationally and locally. Health camp at YMCA
Dehradun, March 3 A total of 164 men and women from nearby places having eyesight problem came for the free eye check-up and general health check-up camp. About 68 elderly people were identified with cataract problem. Dr. O.P. Gupta and Dr. R.N. Singh recommended 10 patients for immediate cataract surgery. The recommended elderly people underwent cataract eye surgery successfully and were given medicines free of cost. |
