Hostels for poor girls pursuing higher education on cards
Dehradun, February 22 The KGBVs with residential facilities provide education to girls (Classes 6 to 8) hailing from the SC/ST and the minority communities. Under the scheme, the Central Government had sanctioned Rs 23.20 lakh for the construction of schools in the remote areas of the state where girls could be provided education from Class 6-8. Later, the state government decided to extend support by bearing the cost of boarding and lodging of the girls till they completed the XII standard, thereby extending the scope of the original scheme. The financial expenses are being met through the grant sanctioned under the Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled component plan. Now the Education Department has presented a proposal for strengthening this system by setting up of Mahila Chhattarwas in the remote areas of the state where girls belonging to economically weaker sections could stay in case they wanted to pursue education or vocational skills. “The students residing in these hostels have performed well in the X and XII standard examination of the state board. These students hail from the remote areas of the state. The girls from Champawat where we have one KGBV (Hostel) have performed exceptionally well. To ensure that these girls take up further studies, provisions of Mahila Chhattarwas in different blocks will prove to be extremely useful. We hope to get Central assistance for the project,” said RK Kunwar, Additional Project Director. Since the start of the project in 2004, the constructions of KGBVs have been pending, forcing the Education Department to acquire buildings on rent. In Dehradun district at Tyuni and Kalsi, the KGBVs continue to be run from rented buildings, so also in Almora and Pithoragarh. But despite incurring extra budget on rent, the Education Department has received a favourable response from girls. A total of 1,230 students are enrolled in the KGBVs in the state. This has encourageded the Education Department to build Mahila Chhattarwas for them. |

Mussoorie, February 22
The state head of HelpAge India, Dr Aapga Singh, said their organisation was already providing wheelchairs and other assisting devices (age-friendly equipment) at locations visited by senior citizens but not explored fully due to their physical limitations. At present such services are available in Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and Pudducherry. In Shimla senior citizens can access wheelchairs on Mall Road and at Marine Walk in Pudducherry. Aapga said HelpAge India was planning to provide wheelchairs free of cost to needy people in the town as it was a premier tourist destination of the state. She added in the first phase four wheelchairs would be provided that would be manned by volunteers. Aapga requested Uniyal for help in providing volunteers for the service. The Senior Citizen Forum members also approved the proposal and said senior citizens and physically challenged persons, especially tourists, would be benefited from the service. Uniyal verbally approved the proposal and said on the issue of providing volunteers he would consult the council members. There has been a long standing demand for a provision of wheelchairs for senior citizens and physical challenged people at popular locations like Mall Road and main bazaars of Mussoorie. |
