My name is… DON

The cast and crew of Don 2 — Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar — are excited about the sequel, where the story, music and the locales have made the whole experience mesmerising

Just two days before Don 2 hits the screens, the Don Shah Rukh Khan pleasantly surprised Chandigarh on Wednesday by showing up with his junglee billi Priyanka Chopra and hugely talented director Farhan Akhtar!

The leaner, meaner and sexier star in rugged jeans, white shirt and a casual jacketthrown over with his Don pony in place, swayed those present with his ready wit, humour and 'charm', which it seems that he is born with!

Don again? "Well, playing Don is one the nicest things that I have ever done. Farhan's writing has made the character 'cooler' in its second outing. The story, music and the locales make this Don mesmerising. "From dream-like 'Rahul' to playing a villain, SRK has allured the box-office alike…"I always wondered why are villain the way they are…a scar on face, a roaring laughter… a bad character can be just one of us, sitting right next to us in a cinema. And by playing Don I have tried to make a negative character 'charming'." One can't deny but accept that he has been successful in the endeavour. Rahul or the Don, there are fans ready to throw themselves at his feet.

SRK needs marketing? Seriously? "Visiting big and small cities for film promotions and live shows is my way of showing gratitude to my fans to whom I owe all that I have today. It started with My Name is Khan and then it's lovely to see my country on my producer's expense," quips the star as the gathered crowd breaks into a laughter.

SRK continues taking some popcorn, a sip of cola, smiling and winking at fans clamouring for attention, but then he also gives a glimpse of his tough side.

Does he support Anna Hazare? "I support 'anti-corruption cause'. How we constitutionalise and implement a draft that makes our society corruption-free in the times to come is a serious, significant issue," he says. Anna issue refuses to die… Will you go to the scheduled rally? Will you make a movie on it? Questioning voices get loud and so does the Khan. "Jab milegi kahani bana lunga (I will make the film when I get the story." Till then he is in no mood to trivialise the issue or 'reap' benefits from a grave issue that concerns the country.

Within seconds, SRK is back to his affable self. Playing Don and its making has been challenging. "There was no fun on the sets (Farhan is a hard taskmaster) but we did enjoy the after-shoot time playing games and stuff."

He thanks the almighty as he has recovered well from his surgeries; and post that a jump from 300 feet, hand-to-hand combats to car-chasing scenes…SRK has done some challenging stunts himself and is pretty kicked about it. "I pass no judgements on my character but try making them 'splendid'," says SRK, off to Lucknow, before the feverish Don campaign comes to an end!

The king-maker
Jasmine Singh

It is amazing to see what time does to see certain things. Step out of the way of certain things, refocus, recollect, pick a fresh pencil; in this case probably a latest tapping laptop, pull up the grey strings and there you go — a whole new fresh story, bombastic dialogues, high voltage action, lot of style and a brand new Don. Yuppie! That was easy.

If this is how you could create a Don 2, a five-year break and some active grey cells — you could be kidding. Well, one look at the multi-talented Farhan Akhtar and you bet it wasn't a joke at all! The talking meter gets rolling, the minute the director and screenplay writer of Don 2 takes his place on the couch next to his fleet — Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra.

"I never thought of making a sequel to Don. While I was travelling for the promotion of Rock On to various cities, I was asked, requested and threatened by many people to make Don 2. And that's how Don 2 got moving," shares Farhan, getting a nod from his fleet all this while. Of course, he is the captain of the 'pricey' ship. But one wonders what makes the ship touch the anchor in five years. Lot of sailing captain!

"I had my old characters Don, Roma; so I could work with these characters. Butmaking Don 2 wasn't easy. I had to retain certain elements and ensure I added new ones. For Don, I still had a chart to take a lead from, but with Don 2 I had more space to explore, introduce and work. Besides anything else, Don is all about Shah Rukh Khan; with him undergoing an elbow surgery, I couldn't think of making the movie without him."

Farhan is all out to create a hype for Don 2 - road shows, conferences, gaming, Internet…no stone is left unturned. "If only I could have small screens showing the promos of Don 2 on my feet or head, I would do that.” With Shah Rukh by his side, promoting a film would have been a cinch. "He is well known so, this saved me from the effort of introducing him to the audiences." Farhan doesn't rule out the possibility of a Don 3! "I have learnt from my past. Never put in a lot of gap in a project. Keep guessing people!

Nothing junglee!
Jasmine Singh

Graceful: Priyanka Chopra

What would do you are a beautiful celebrity who has a Miss India title to his kitty? Who has delivered some good blockbusters; who is sexy and who is soon-to-launch a musical album?

And then one fine day you are seated next to none other than King Khan and you don't have a single journo throwing any question at you…what would you do?

Think what Priyanka Chopra would do in this scenario. The best thing — smile, munch popcorns and wait for your turn.

Finally, someone looked at the junglee billi and realised she was also part of the film! Not to forget, she looks amazing in her role and does some real action-packed sequences.

She smiles, "Yes, I did some real action sequences for the first time." When in Chandigarh, talk good about it - least you could do.

"My father is from Ambala, so we visited Chandigarh often, especially Sector-17. It is nice to be in the city," shares Priyanka, who looked hot in hot red pants.

The word hot reminds us of something. Why do hot women fall for rogues? If you know her character Roma is in love with Don!

"We all like some element of rogue in a person. Any girl would fall for it," she sums it up with a throaty laugh. So, does the good girl get the bad boy in the movie? "Wait and watch," she smiles.

Chatter box
Stars and their second innings

While some people seek second chances in life, there are some who never make any mistake. The same applies for these television actors who recaptured their glory with their second show. Here’s a look at them…

Hit woman: Sukirti Kandpal
New hat: Gurmeet Choudhary
Likeable one: Sakshi

Ram Kapoor

Who could have been a better actor opposite Sakshi Tanwar than Ram Kapoor? Besides winning Indian Telly Awards three times in a row, he has acted in five films. After the charisma of his character Jai Walia from Kasamh Se, Ekta Kapoor named his character in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain as Ram Kapoor. Such is the power of his name!

Sukirti Kandpal

Famous for her as Dr Riddhima Gupta, Sukirti proved that she isn’t one-hit wonder! Sukirti preserved her success even in her second show Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani. After the end of PKYEK and delivering two hit roles, Sukirti is certainly aiming for a hat-trick!

Sanaya Irana

She is born star. She started her career with modelling and landed up with a role in Fanaa starring Kajol. Nonetheless, it was television that got her much-needed recognition. Her major claim to fame was Gunjan from Miley Jab Hum Tum and later Khushi from Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. And from what we hear, she is gearing up for another hit show!

Sakshi Tanwar

Her contender Smriti Irani may have gone on a hiatus, but Sakshi Tanwar is still continuing to wow the audience. Despite having appeared in movies and many TV shows, her character Parvati from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii remains the most popular. And obviously after the popularity of the show, the high expectations from her resulted in a three-year break from small-screen. Even so, she managed to retain the success as Priya Kapoor in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain?

Gurmeet Choudhary

He played Lord Rama in Ramayan. While many were doubtful if he could play a mythological role, Gurmeet stunned everyone with his performance. He became even more successful as Maan in Geet- Hui Sabse Parayi. We too are fervently awaiting for his next show!

Long wait for Rajat

Wait and watch: Rajat Tokas Nandita Mehra and Bhairavi Raichura’s 24 Frames’ first offering will have to wait for some more time to hit the TV screens. The production house’s debut show starring Mugdha Chapekar and Rajat Tokas will now get a new storyline as the previous one has been scrapped by the channel, Colors. The production house shot for six episodes but the channel wasn’t happy with the outcome. Hence they have asked the production house to shoot a pilot with a new storyline.

Wait and watch: Rajat Tokas

The actress is lucky to get a mentor like Sumeet Mittal who constantly guides her and also gives her tips about how to handle the media and the attention from the fans. Even while shooting, her co-stars take care of her. She enjoys the extra attention she gets from her co-stars. Who wouldn’t?

Rohit Shetty to judge

Rohit Shetty Ace director Rohit Shetty will be part of UTV Bindass’ Big Switch. This season of Big Switch will be titled Big Switch 3 - Life without daddy ka paisa and will feature eight super rich youngsters who enjoy their lives on their father’s money. When PC hugged Bebo

Priyanka Chopra made the effort to step up and hug Kareena Kapoor at a recent awards function. Both Priyanka and Kareena were dressed in black gowns and looked great.

There were cold vibes between the two, not just because they are professional rivals but they both have dated Shahid Kapoor.

A source says, “Kareena arrived much after Priyanka and sat alone on a reserved table. Priyanka was already there waiting for her performance to begin. Kareena was joined by Madhur Bhandarkar. PC and Madhur are good friends, having worked together in Fashion. When Priyanka saw that Kareena was comfortably seated, she walked over to her and gave her a hug. Kareena didn’t get up but reciprocated and hugged her back. They spoke for a couple of minutes and then PC went back to her seat.”

He adds, “Priyanka and Kareena are still in the cold war and avoid being seen together in public or being at the same place at the same time. At a function last year, PC hugged Kareena who couldn’t be less interested about the whole thing. They don’t hang out with each other but it is not as if they dislike each other. Their lives are on different tracks. Part of the rivalry is created by the media.’

Let us see if Priyanka and Kareena have genuinely made up this time.

Too real for comfort

Actor Daniel Craig actually lost consciousness while pretending to suffocate during a scene for his latest flick The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as the cameras rolled. The James Bond star is playing the character of journalist Mikael Blomkvist alongside lead character Rooney Mara in the Hollywood adaptation of the thriller, based on the books by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson.

Director David Fincher revealed that Craig had a close call on set when he had to be hoisted in the air with a plastic bag placed over his head. “The first night that we got to the hoisting and the stunt co-ordinator came in and said, “Daniel has to hold this little metal thing in his hand so that if he does lose consciousness...’ Because he’s gonna be acting like he’s suffocating, which is not very different from actually suffocating...,” the Daily Express quoted Fincher as saying. “He was hoisted up and we were rolling and he had this thing in his hand and as I’m watching the monitor I hear, ‘Ting, ting, ting’ and we rush in (to the room) and he had passed out!” he added.

The production report for that day said, ‘Let Daniel go 15 minutes early due to unconsciousness.’ However, the 43-year-old actor insisted that the incident was all part of the filmmaking process.

“It was just another day working with David Fincher!” Craig said. — ANI

Legally unmarried

Singer turned songwriter Amelia Warner said her brief 'marriage' to Hollywood actor Colin Farrell was not legally binding.

The 29-year-old musician, who records under the name Slow Moving Millie, was reported to have married the Irishman in Tahiti in 2001 when she was just 19, but the couple split several months later. "We didn't actually get married - it's not actually true.

I think we've been too polite to deny it. We had a ceremony on a beach in Tahiti that was by no means legal and we knew it wasn't. It was just a thing we did on holiday. We went shark feeding and then we did that. We booked them both on the activities desk at the hotel.

"It really wasn't this secret wedding that no one was invited to. It was lovely, it was silly, it was sweet but by no means was it a serious thing and I think my mum thought it was quite funny," she said. Warner also said she was devastated when the relationship came to an end. — PTI

Jolie loves nomadic life

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie dreads the day when one of her six children asks to be excused from the family’s global travels, insisting she will break down in tears when it happens.

The 36-year-old and her partner Brad Pitt, who have three adopted kids and three biological tots, pride themselves on their nomadic lifestyle.

But Jolie knows eventually her children will want to live in one place and she can’t bear the thought of leaving one behind.

“Right now they love it. If we’re in the same place for two months they wanna know why we’re not getting on an airplane. They really love to travel... Because they’re such a big travelling pack.

“It’s not one child moving around the world and missing friends, there’s so many of them they have constant play dates and are always together...

“But I’m sure they’re gonna say, ‘Mum, let me stay home’ and when that happens I’m gonna cry... I don’t wanna settle, I love travelling, but we’ll see. They’ll probably end up living all around the world and my old age will be Brad and I travelling, trying to visit all our grandchildren in random countries,” Jolie said. — PTI

Rihanna hits back

The editor of a Dutch fashion magazine has resigned after using a racial slur to describe R&B superstar Rihanna, who has blasted the publication for being “disrespectful and desperate.” “I hope u can read english, because your magazine is apoor representation of the evolution of human rights!,” Rihanna wrote.

“I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000’s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race!,” the singer said. Editor Eva Hoeke, who used N-word to describe Rihanna’s style, apologised twice saying there was no “racist motive” behind the choice of words but it failed to placate readers, the Hollywood Reporter said. Hoeke said she decided to step down after consulting with publisher Yves Gijrath.

“Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately,” she wrote. Gijrath has now invited the Umbrella hitmaker to share her “feelings and thoughts on the article” in the next issue. — PTI

TRENDSETTER
Sporty & street smart

Dressed to heal
:
Dr Bir Angad Singh Gambhir

Fashion is style and style is fashion, but only those who can be fashionably stylish are the real head turners. They may be totally branded from head to toe or don the simple casual look in a smart manner. Dr Bir Angad Singh Gambhir, a medical graduate, believes in being unique.

Your sense of style

I feel that a person is stylish if he or she wears well-fitted clothes and stands apart from others in a smart manner.

Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

An Adidas sweater, which I bought while on my visit to the FI race event.

Brand crazy or street pick-ups?

If it is from Ludhiana, it has to be brands. But I like to pick up stuff from the streets in Delhi.

My style icon would be…

Hrithik Roshan for his dapper sense of dressing.

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity?

Mallika Sherawat and Sonam Kapoor.

Which look would you prefer —sporty, chic or glamorous?

Sporty.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Tapering jeans and very tight at the bottom look horrible. I don’t like bright colours for men.

Your take on accessories?

Should be kept to the minimum on the daily basis. But for a party a wacky wrist watch is the right thing to wear.

What gives you a high on the confidence level……..

I feel confident after talking to mom and listening to her confidence boosting talks.

(As told to Poonam Bindra)
