PPP to announce its list of candidates soon
Bathinda, December 15 Stating this here today, PPP supremo Manpreet Singh Badal said the party candidates would be announced soon. Regarding sharing of seats with other political parties that are part of the Sanjha Morcha, Manpreet said the PPP would be the senior partner. The winnability would the main criteria for identifying seats for the constituents of the Sanjha Morcha. As the Morcha was staking claim for forming the government, so it would contest all the 117 seats, he added. Manpreet said the statements by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that he (Manpreet) had stabbed the SAD in the back, betrayed it or brought shame to the entire Badal family, was unbecoming on the part of the CM. Such statements might have sounded convincing in case he had received commission or indulged in corrupt practices during his political career, but it was not so, Manpreet added. Manpreet here today visited the residence of former senior Additional Advocate General of Punjab, Sukhdeep Singh Bhinder, who announced that he was joining the PPP. Bhinder, who had resigned from the post of senior Additional Advocate General, on December 1, had remained associated with the SAD for many years. Regarding Bhinder's candidature from Bathinda or any other seat, Manpreet said it would be decided by the party's Parliamentary Board. Manpreet said his fight with the SAD was not a family feud but an effort to break the political status quo. He said the Congress and the SAD wanted to maintain the status quo of ruling the state on an alternative basis while on the other hand, it is the PPP that wants to change the practice. He also said the PPP would allot more than 50 per cent party tickets to the youth and women as the youth is the backbone of the PPP. Manpreet said the Congress and the SAD were afraid of the Sanjha Morcha as it had been emerging as a credible force in the state. He said the Congress and the SAD-BJP alliance had no agenda, except for mud-slinging, while the PPP talked about strengthening the economy of the state. Manpreet said he had been getting overwhelming support from the overseas. He also said that he would contest from Gidderbaha as he was not afraid of any one. If voted to power, the Sanjha Morcha would constitute a strong Lok Pal in every district while the state-level Lok Pal would be from outside the state, he added. |

AMRI fire: Hospitals asked to ensure fire-fighting system
Faridkot, December 15 In a letter sent to the principals of all 136 medical and nursing institutes affiliated to the medical university in Punjab, the vice-chancellor Dr SS Gill said that though the chances of fire in a hospital were relatively low, there should be no negligence in installing and upgrading the fire safety measures in the medical institutions. As the hospitals use a lot of inflammable and even radioactive materials, so the buildings should have an adequate number of fire extinguishers in good working condition, said the vice-chancellor. Giving details of the fire incident in Kolkata, the VC revealed in his letter how most of the deceased at the AMRI hospital in Kolkata died of suffocation due to toxic fumes. There should be routine check-up of the expiry date of fire extinguishers in the hospitals and the hospital buildings should have fire escape route and separate doors to serve as separate entry and exit points, said the VC. As short circuit is the main cause of fire, so ensure that there are no loose or naked wires besides temporary power connections. It is a common practice in the hospitals that the combustible material keeps lying in public places or in the halls, but these should be stored only in proper places, said the VC. The VC warned the medical institutions not to put more than one LPG cylinder at one place. There should be regular check-up of the working condition of the fire hydrants, the availability of water for fire-fighters and the accessibility for fire engines to reach the fire points. It is the responsibility of all hospitals to do a self review without waiting for the government to crack the whip. |

Youth Cong polls
Fazilka, December 15 A large number of youths turned up to exercise their franchise. As per official sources, about 97.7 per cent of the youths participated in the election process. Out of a total of 538 elected youth Congress delegates, 526 cast their vote. The faction-ridden youth Congress is led by two groups. One group is led by former MLA Mohinder Rinwa whose son Sidharth is in the race of the post of president of the local Youth Congress unit. The other group is led by the outgoing local youth Congress president Ranjam Kamra who is reportedly backed by MLA Sunil Jakhar's family of Abohar and half a dozen aspirants for the Congress party ticket. Kamra is also in the fray. The supporters of both the groups kept on ferrying the delegates the whole day to help them cast their votes. The youth Congress election was full of tension and complaints. The election process could start only about half an hour after the scheduled time of 9 am as the two warring factions had a verbal duel over the entry of delegates into the venue of the polling station at Sundar Ashram. Senior Congressmen and some office-bearers of the local Congress and Congress municipal councillors continued to interfere making threatening gestures. “We have sent visuals and videographed CDs of interference by senior Congressmen to the Youth Congress leader of Himachal Pradesh, Manoj Pathania, who is the state elections in-charge,” said Ranjam Kamra. “I shall take action against the contestants if the senior Congressmen related of any faction were found interfering in the election process," said state election in-charge Manoj Pathania, while talking to The Tribune over the phone. "Complaints regarding senior Congress leaders who have flouted the party directives would be sent to the All India Congress Committee,” said Pathania. "The experience of conducting Youth Congress elections has resulted in bitterness amongst the youth Congress factins. The outcome is likely to cast a shadow on the youth Congress support to the party candidates in the ensuing assembly polls," said a senior Congress leader, Roshan Lal. |

Daula villagers seek action against EGS teachers
Gidderbaha, December 15 They demanded that a case to be registered against EGS teachers, who had allegedly passed casteist remarks against a Panch, Iqbal Singh on December 4, when the “slapping” incident occurred. The protesters alleged that the teachers passed casteist remarks against their Panch, but the police was not ready to take any action against them. The panch, Iqbal Singh said, "We have already complained to the SSP Muktsar in this regard, but the cops are not ready to register a case against the teachers. This is a very sensitive matter and the cops should take it seriously, otherwise we will intensify the stir." After raising slogans against the police for an hour, the protesters cleared the highway at about 4 pm. On the other hand, the EGS teachers said that the delegation which had gone to meet the Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal at Daula village on Deember 4 comprised mostly Dalit teachers. "How can we use foul or casteist word against any Dalit panch, as most of the teachers who had gone to meet Harsimrat comprised Dalits? The accused Sarpanch Balwinder Singh Toti is using cheap tactics to suppress our voice. But, we will stick to our demands, as we are in the right," said Pritpal Singh, president, EGS Teachers' Union. He also criticised the state government for delaying the acceptance of their demand to give them regular jobs. |
