Mishap at Rly crossing
Jassi Bagh Wali (Bathinda), Dec 10 Villagers and police officials who reached the spot said this was the 22nd accident this year at the unmanned railway crossing. The identity of the tractor driver could not be ascertained. The villagers said the driver had got the battery cover of his vehicle repaired at the village bus stand. He also enquired from the passersby if some vehicle was following his trolley before approaching the railway crossing. The onlookers said that the driver failed to sight the Bathinda-Lalgarh passenger train (54701), as he was busy in steering the tractor just ahead of the railway crossings. The railway crossing is situated on a mound and commuters have to manage their vehicle on the incline to cross the railway line. "Since he was alone on a tractor loaded with hay, he was confused when the vehicle got stuck on the railway line after its engine stopped. He tried to restart the vehicle but failed,” said Pali Mashana of the NGO, Sangat Sahara. Pali was among those who reached the spot within a few minutes after the accident. “One fails to spot the trains as the trees obstruct the commuters' view as drivers try to cross the railway line on the mound,” Pali said. He said three persons have lost their lives including a young girl while dozens have received serious injuries in the last few months. Ashok Kumar, a village resident, said that accidents take place at the unmanned railway crossing almost every day. The body parts of the driver was scattered up to half a kilometer from the site of the accident. Some parts of the passenger train too was scattered around the site and the train remain stationed at the place for over half an hour. Investigating officer from the Sangat police station Nar Singh said the Government Railway Police (GRP) was informed about the accident. |

Jail official thrashed me, alleges doctor
Bathinda, December 10 The assistant superintendent denied the allegation and instead accused the doctor of arriving late to diagnose a 'serious' patient. He also accused the doctor of refusing his request to see a patient and instead entering the women's ward to see another patient whose condition was not serious. Narrating his tale at the local Civil Hospital, Dr Karamjit Singh alleged that the assistant superintendent Baldev Singh slapped him in the presence of the jail staff and convicts. He alleged that Baldev was drunk and also abused him. A visibly disturbed Dr Karamjit Singh was accompanied by his colleagues at the local Civil Hospital and left on the pretext of lodging a police complaint. Baldev Singh, when contacted, refuted the allegations. He said that the health condition of an inmate, a smack addict, deteriorated and he was brought near the jail entrance. "Dr Karamjit kept us waiting and then refused to see the ailing patient and entered inside the women's ward. “We urged him to first refer the serious patient to the Civil Hospital over which he got upset and abused me," he said, adding that he did not slap the doctor. Jail Superintendent PK Garg said a detailed inquiry would be marked tomorrow and strict action would be initiated against the assistant superintendent of the jail, if he was found guilty. |
