Congress has no agenda, says Sukhbir
Talwandi Sabo, December 14 Sukhbir was talking to the media persons after laying the foundation stone of the Akal University that is being established here by the Himachal Pradesh-based Kalgidhar Trust. He said that the present SAD-BJP alliance government has focused its attention towards all-round development of the state while Amarinder Singh was behaving like a “rudderless ship” as a result of which he had no option but to say that of voted to power he would continue to carry forward the development works initiated by the SAD-led coalition government. Sukhbir said that the people should realise that only the present government had the capacity to initiate development works in every nook and corner of the state and any break in the government would stall such activity. Amarinder has nothing to claim as the achievement of his government in the list of 51 points that he had released in an advertisement. Earlier, while speaking at the foundation laying ceremony, Sukhbir said it was the endeavour of the government to develop this holy town as a hub of learning and education. This aim has been achieved with three universities, the Akal University, the Guru Kashi University and the extension centre of the Punjabi University, coming up here in the area that was considered the most backward in education. The Central University of Punjab (CUP) has also been established in Bathinda. A piece of 40 acres of land has been donated for the university by Sant Mitha Singh. Baba Iqbal Singh, president of the Kalgidhar Trust, said that among the centres of excellence proposed to be established in the campus here were, international centre for Guru Granth Sahib studies and comparative religious studies, centre for health and medical research and international centre for divine music and spiritualism. It was also proposed to establish a college for health sciences, college of medical sciences, school of medical chemistry and herbal medicines, school of nano-technology and school of nutrition and food technology. |

Mann accuses Cong of defaming EGS worker
Bathinda, December 14 Bhagwant Mann questioned the PPCC as to who had given it permission to publish the photograph of Varinderpal Kaur in the newspapers. He said it was a matter of sorrow that the Congress was now busy in gaining political mileage of the incident while it had also 'beaten up" the EGS volunteers during its regime in 2006. "Varinderpal says that the Sarpanch had slapped her once while the Congress has slapped her unspecified times by publishing her photograph," he said. He said this was a defamation case as the PPCC had not taken permission from Varinderpal Kaur for using this photograph. Mann also said he had supported Varinderpal Kaur today as he wanted that such advertisements should not appear in any newspaper in future. Varinder Pal Kaur also said the PPCC had neither taken permission from her nor from her father for publishing the photograph. She also said the political parties should not use her name during Assembly elections for seeking votes. She said she wanted that she should not be defamed more in any way by the political parties. She said she would file or not file a defamation complaint in the court against the PPCC, she would talk to the EGS Adhyapak Union Punjab in this regard. President of the EGS Teachers Union Punjab Pritpal Singh said the EGS teachers did not want to become a part of any political party, including the PPP. He also warned the political parties, including the Congress, that they would not tolerate such acts if any party tried to gain political mileage by showing this photograph of Varinderpal Kaur in future. He said if needed, they would also initiate legal proceedings. Kulwant Singh, the father of Varinderpal Kaur, said that if he did not get justice, then by obtaining support from the Congress party, he along with others would take out a protest march from Sukhna Ablu village to Daula village (Gidderbaha) to gherao Sarpanch's village Daula. He said he would also file a defamation complaint against the Sarpanch. |

Party ticket to liquor baron
Faridkot, December 14 While the party leadership has conveyed to the disgruntled party leaders to fall in line with the decision but to register their opposition, some of these annoyed leaders are mobilising some local panchayats in their support to lay claim to the party ticket. One of these ticket claimants has even formally inaugurated many water treatment plants in the villages, leaving the party leadership and district authorities amazed with the haste in making the inauguration without any official or party nod. To inaugurate these water treatment plants with reverse osmosis (RO) system in some villages of Faridkot, the party had decided to put up an impressive political show in view of the upcoming assembly elections and Faridkot MP, Paramjit Kaur Gulshan was scheduled to inaugurate these plants. But in an instance of political one-upmanship in Faridkot, when the ticket aspirants are in staunch competition, striving for the attention of the SAD chief, the water treatment plants were inaugurated before the scheduled date. Accompanied by some panchayat members, another ticket aspirant, an Akali leader, reached Bhalaiana village of Muktsar to meet CM Parkash Singh Badal two days back-demanding the ticket and downsizing the party’s candidate, Deep Malhotra. But the CM, in no uncertain terms, conveyed to this leader that the decision to allot party ticket vests with Sukhbir. After former SAD MLA Kushaldeep Dhillon abandoned the party to join hands with Manpreet Badal, the SAD was facing a leadership crisis in Faridkot in the last one year. Some time back, it was irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon whose name was doing the rounds as the next party candidate from Faridkot. Brushing aside any opposition to his candidature, Malhotra said it is the democratic right of every one to ask for a ticket. There were no differences among the party leaders over his name, he claimed. However, sources revealed that the absence of two party leaders from Deputy CM's meeting at Bathinda today in connection with December 18 Moga rally preparations also fuelled speculations. |

Bathinda, December 14 Sukhbir said that there was no government worth the name at the Centre and despite repeated SOS from the Punjab government to allow the export of 1121 variety of paddy and potato to the neighbouring and Gulf countries, the Centre failed to take any decision. He said that lakhs of Basmati and potato farmers were suffering in Punjab due to tyhe ban on export and they are cursing the Congress party for their fate.
