HC tells Delhi to keep night shelters functional
New Delhi, December 13 Directing the Delhi government as well as the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board of the MCD to comply with its August 9 order to improve the maintenance of night shelters, a bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw directed them to operate all 84 night shelters during winter. The court order came on a plea by an NGO apprising it of the closure of some night shelters despite the fact that the court had earlier rejected the government's plea to shut 84 temporary night shelters on the ground that they were losing more than Rs 1 crore per month due to low occupancy. The NGO, Shahari Adhikar Manch, alleged that despite the court's direction to the MCD to operate all night shelters, only 16 were operational as of today. It further alleged that the court had also asked the MCD to constitute a panel to find out ways and means to improve the upkeep of night shelters, but nothing had been done so far. The bench was deliberating on the issue of city night shelters that it had seized upon suo motu on media reports last year about the demolition of a night shelter on Pusa Road amid biting cold last year.

Celiacs enjoy wheat-free evening
New Delhi, December 13 Seemingly ordinary, but golgappas, noodles, chhole kulche, gulab jamun, pasta and cake are not ordinary for people sensitive to gluten. So, as the Celiac Society for Delhi put together the annual event at the Silver Oak Lawns of the India Habitat Centre here on Sunday, it was a fun-filled gluten-free evening for people suffering from wheat allergy and their families. The programme, organized for the fifth time, is looked forward to by members of the society the whole year as it gives them an opportunity to interact with fellow celiacs and learn how to deal with it by exchanging experiences. The guests at the event included doctors, nutritionists, counsellors and chefs who fielded questions by the members regarding sensitivity to gluten-from how to diagnose the problem to how to overcome the challenges thrown by it. Murali Kartik, renowned cricketer supported the cause by participating as chief guest. Giving the example of Novak Djokovic, Serbian tennis champion who has been ranked world number one despite being on a gluten-free diet, he dispelled fears of the celiacs as far as being in form is concerned. Food labelling continues to be an issue as experts felt the need for a pressure group to impress upon the government the importance of listing ingredients on food packets as they said the prevalence of celiac disease was believed to be one in 200 persons. Since it is a food allergy in which cure lies in the cause, that is cure lies in staying away from wheat, the most important topic is what to eat as a substitute for wheat, how to make dishes with alternative ingredients and where to procure the ingredients or food. Thus, the demonstration of gluten-free cooking of dishes like rice noodles, moong daal cutlets and apple granola crunch by chefs attracted attention. While a gluten-free cooking competition was held for parents, the children had fun getting a chance to be 'li'l chefs' even as a magic show had them enthralled. Manufacturers of wheat-free products had also put up stalls for the benefit of the patients. |
Pros and cons of social movements discussed
New Delhi, December 13 Over 2,000 sociologists from across the globe are participating in the conference. Prof Michael Burawoy, president, International Sociological Association, spoke on social movements and democracy and vouched for a model of 'direct democracy' instead of 'representative' one. Citing the pitfalls of the latter, he elaborated on the fluidity of finance and added that Barak Obama as the President of the United States has been a failure in terms of managing financial capital. Prof Staffan Lindburg (Sweden) spoke about social transformation in context of transition from agrarian to industrial society. Contextualizing the discussion, he opined that such a transformation in India has been markedly slow and characterized by extreme agrarian crisis, reverse tenancy and scarcity of labour, especially of female labour. Referring to the rate of urbanization as one of the slowest in the world, he elaborated on how 'self-serving politicians' exploit cheap labour in small towns and villages and how this entrenchment 're-embeds rural capital'. Prof Detlef Breisen (Germany) demarcating the historical trajectory of sociology in Germany spoke about how the discipline was institutionalized reluctantly in Germany due to a large fraternity of sociologists fleeing Nazi Germany. Dr Satoshi Ota (Japan) traced the history of sociology in Japan, and spoke of distinguished changes in post-World War II Japan. The period following the 1950s manifested in immense social transformation, wherein, 'extended' families were replaced by 'nuclear' families and 'companies' were transformed to 'communities' for indulging in recreational activities. Attributing high living expenses and extremely low levels of confidence among Japanese males to low fertility rates in Japan, he termed it a new social problem in the 1990s. He also positioned the problem of burgeoning 'single' male and 'ageing' population to a section of Japanese males, who prefer to live in absolute seclusion. In conclusion, he advocated exploring the complex relationship between feminism and low fertility rates in developing and under-developed countries. |

4-day-old baby operated upon for rare nasal cyst
Faridabad, December 13 The infant, who was born on November 27 with TC, an abnormality which is developed during the growth of the foetus in the mother's uterus, underwent the surgery on December 1. The operation was carried out by a team of doctors at AIMS. According to doctors, TC is an abnormal growth of the lining of the nasopharynx (the area behind the nose) that results in a cyst where the sac is filled with fluid in the soft tissue of the nasopharynx. Some of these cysts drain on their own and some do not. "When the cysts do not drain, they may create symptoms such as pressure, headaches and ear congestion. The girl had developed breathing difficulties. Her oxygen levels were falling and she was not even able to swallow milk," said senior ENT consultant Lalit Mohan Parasher. Doctors said the process for this kind of surgery is very complex as the cyst was a rare occurrence even in adults. A team of doctors conducting several tests on the infant initially were not able to identify the cause of the baby's inability to breathe normally while being fed. "This was a complicated case as the diagnosis was unclear and time was running out for the baby. The very procedure to investigate and conduct a diagnosis on the four-day-old was challenging as she was delicate and her immunity levels were low," the doctor said. As per the surgeons, operating on the infant was "akin to conducting surgery on a mouse". "Taking utmost precautions, with just 4-5 ml blood loss and within 28 minutes we operated the cyst which was large and infected and which had caused respiratory obstruction to the child," the doctor added.
