Linemen go on hunger strike
Faridkot, November 13 The protesting linemen were arrested under Sections 107, 151 of the CrPC on Friday for their alleged attempt to disturb the public tranquility during the Chief Minister's Sangat Darshan programme in Gidderbaha. The unemployed linemen were demanding employment. Yesterday, the SDM Gidderbaha ordered to send these arrested linemen to the Faridkot jail on judicial remand for five days Buta Singh, the general secretary of the Punjab Unemployed Linemen Union, said all the linemen in the jail would continue their strike until their demands were accepted. "Our every peaceful protest against the state government is being trampled with brutal force, so we have no option but to start an indefinite hunger strike in jail till our demands are met," said Buta Singh. Faridkot Jail Superintendent Raj Mohinder Singh Dhaliwal feigned ignorance about the linemen observing hunger strike. "Some of them may not be taking their meals but not all of them," said Dhaliwal. Before they were sent to the Faridkot jail yesterday, most of the arrested linemen accused the Gidderbaha police of not giving them any eatables in the police lock-up after they were arrested on Friday.

Indo-Pak war hero’s memorial at Abohar set ablaze
Abohar, November 13 Councillor Vimal Thathai was among the firsts to reach the site. He regretted the late official reaction to the incident. So agitated were the protesters that they, including ex-servicemen, prevented some Punjab police cops as the latter tried to clean the blackened statue using handkerchiefs. Balluana DSP Mohinder Singh tried to pacify the irate mob. Notably, Major Surinder Prasad, a recipient of the Vir Chakra posthumously, sacrificed his life while trying to get back the possession of a border post and village in the Khemkaran sector during the 1965 war. The memorial was unveiled by the then PM Lal Bahadur Shastri's wife Lalita Shastri. Surinder was the only son of former MLA Master Teg Ram. |

One-upmanship leaves event
organisers, admn in a spot
Faridkot, November 13 The contest between two claimants for the SAD (B) ticket from the Faridkot seat not only left the district civil and police authorities in a difficult situation today but the members of a cultural club were also seen sulking over the competition between the two leaders. To organize "Dhee Punjab Di", an annual cultural programme in Faridkot, scheduled for today, the National Youth Welfare Club, Faridkot, was making full-fledged arrangements for the last many days. A liquor industrialist, who is in race for the SAD(B) ticket from Faridkot seat, was sponsoring the cultural event in the memory of his late father, OP Malhotra. So, publicity material, including flex boards and pamphlets with Malhotra's pictures, were on display in the town. Much to the chagrin of an Akali leader who is also a claimant for the ticket from the Faridkot seat, even the invitation cards, distributed in the rural areas, carried the pictures of Malhotra. As it raised the hackles of the Akali leader, he started building pressure on the Youth Club to remove all posters and flex board, carrying the name of his rival in the town. Even a day before the event, new invitation cards were printed and distributed for the function, deleting Malhotra's name. Deep Malhotra, a strong contender for the SAD (B) ticket from Faridkot, said he would not like to indulge in mudslinging. "I offered all financial and other assistance to the organizers of the programme and even now, when all flex boards and invitation cards, carrying the name of my father, have been removed 24 hours before the function, I would not like to blame any individual," he said. Hours after the name of his father was removed from the programme's credit list, Malhotra left for Delhi. "I'm not attending the programme due to some family reasons," he said. Meanwhile, the sources revealed that the matter has already reached Punjab Chief Minister and the CM has asked the district authorities to interfere to solve the tussle for "one-upmanship". Directions have been issued to the district authorities to put up a big banner, carrying the name of OP Malhotra on the main stage of the programme, revealed sources. |

MFN status: Ferozepur traders welcome Pak move
Ferozepur, November 13 The Ferozepur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while welcoming the development, said the move will help in the revival and growth of the economy on both sides of the border. At the moment, rice mill machinery and some agricultural equipment is being exported from here to Pakistan through the Mumbai port which takes a long time. Subhash Tuli, chairman, Beopar Mandal, said the reopening of the border will result in prosperity on both sides of the border, which at the moment were considered industrially backward. “When the Wagah border can be used for import-export, then why not Ferozepur, as the distance from the border is much shorter here,” asked Tuli. Ashwani Mehta, president, Beopar Mandal said that on earlier occasions also, especially during Atal Behari Vajpayee's bus yatra to Pakistan, followed by several confidence building measures between the two countries, the local traders were hopeful that the border will reopen soon. But the incidents like the attack on Indian Parliament and the Mumbai terror attack eclipsed their hopes from time to time. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, while talking to The Tribune here yesterday, said his government has taken up the reopening of this border with the Union Government several times. |
Sriganganagar, Nov 13 The matter came under reference while discussing the impact of agriculture and animal husbandry on climate changes particularly with reference to methenogenesis. The experts were of the view that only about 25 per cent of the total methane generated as greenhouse gas is estimated to be excreted by the ruminants. They observed that there had been 2-3 times more methane addition through the rice fields. Burning of rice straw in the field itself adds a large quantity calculated in terms of carbon dioxide as an important greenhouse gas. — OC |
