Residents react to changing pictures on ambulances under Emergency Response Services

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 21
For a change, the ambulances under project Emergency Responses Services (ERS), plying in the city now bear the pictures of Punjab Health Minister Satpal Gosain. Earlier, when the Sewa ambulances, popularly known as ‘108’ were launched, they had the pictures of Gosain’s predecessor, Laxmi Kanta Chawla.

However, Chawla’s pictures were later removed after the media published reports terming the act as a political gimmick aimed at harnessing mileage in the forthcoming Assembly elections. In the current situation, with a fleet of emergency vehicles displaying Gosain’s picture, it seems the minister is playing the same card to build his image as was done by his predecessor.

Commenting on the issue, Amit Kumar, a student said, “By these kinds of acts, the political leaders try to take credit for services for which public money has been spent.” Providing services is their duty at which most of them have failed, he said, adding had the minister spent money from his own pocket, he was eligible to paste his picture. Another resident, Harpreet Kaur said, “With change in ‘rulers’, pictures would always change. If the Congress wins the next elections, these pictures would once again change.” She added that even the money spent on changing of pictures is spent from the state exchequer when it serves no purpose.

Gurbhaj Singh of Mission Aagaaj, an NGO, said, “These pictures satiate the political leader’s personal ego rather than serving any political means. Is it not their duty to work for the welfare of the public when they have been chosen by voters for the same purpose?” Brij Bedi, a social activist, said, “It would have been better if instead of the picture of the minister, the photograph of our heroes as Bhagat Singh or Mahatma Gandhi were pasted. The money spent on such services is tax-payers’ money and not the government’s.” He added that if a minister wants his picture to be pasted, he should pay from his own pocket.

Anu Peshawaria gives advice to those marrying NRIs

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 21
An eminent Immigration specialist in the US and founder of the USA-Seva Legal Aid Foundation, a free legal aid service for the Indians in the US, Anu Peshwaria has come out in support of deserted brides of Punjab by their NRI husbands. She depicts their plight in her new book “Lives on the brink - bridging the chasm between two great nations, India and United States”.

Anu, Kiran Bedi’s younger sister, was at the Guru Nanak Dev University for the book launch function of her new book which narrated the heart-rending tale of three gullible and innocent brides whose dreams and life had been shattered after marrying NRI husbands. She had made some suggestions to the government and the families keen to marry their daughters off to NRIs to keep these in mind to ensure a safe future for their daughters.

She said the cheated and battered women have to begin from scratch in an alien country.

Also working as a legal advisor to the Embassy of India, Washington DC, Anu stated that the population of NRIs in the US was more than two million NRI population in the US and surprisingly, 90 per cent of the women cheated refuse to come back from the US. She said there were two reasons for it. One was the fear of social stigma back home and the second was the feeling of being more empowered in the US since a woman was entitled to 50 per cent of her husband’s property as per the Community Property Law. She demanded the enactment of a similar law in India.

She said that she had handed over a copy of the book to Vayalar Ravi, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, to put across her point of view to the concerned government level.

Earlier, she had written a book, ‘Immigrant’s Dream’, which addresses the problem of brides from India married to NRI husbands.

Anu was born and brought up, along with her three sisters, in the holy city. All the four sisters did their schooling at the Sacred Heart School, Amritsar. Anu recalled that “Didi (Kiran) after becoming an officer took me to Delhi to provide me with the best of education available at that time”.

An accomplished sportswoman, she had represented India in the Wimbledon as a junior tennis champion. She vividly remembered practising at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Tennis Complex in Ram Bagh, popularly known as Company Bagh. She said that she loved to visit Amritsar and that she made a point to come here at once a year.
