Cook spoiling English broth
Mumbai, October 21
The Indian players can be excused for thinking that at this a venue where they can do no wrong. If there were any doubts regarding their recent form and ability, last night’s memorable run chase at Mohali would have all but cast those doubts away. After that win at the PCA Stadium, the confidence in the Indian camp is sure to have skyrocketed (it was already right up there after two big wins). What this series is doing is bringing all the confidence back into the Indian team — the confidence which had taken a beating in England recently. The self-belief in the Indian camp is resurfacing and England are doing their bit to ensure this with their lackadaisical show. If England could not win even after posting that good total in Mohali, there is little to suggest that they can do so in the remaining two games in Mumbai and Kolkata. Last night was a game that England should have won but they somehow contrived to lose it. This idea of having three different captains for all three formats is really not helping England (Andrew Strauss Tests, Alastair Cook ODI’s and Stuart Broad T20) To begin with, Cook will struggle to get into the first XI of any good one-day side and here he is leading the England team in a format he doesn’t really excel at. He has played a couple of fine ODI knocks but overall he lacks the consistency and pace of scoring for this form of cricket. Perhaps deep down even he realises that. Such a thought can never help more so if you are the captain of the side as well. It was pretty evident that Cook was clueless about how to defend even a big total in Mohali. His field placings had too many holes and those gaps were exploited almost at will. His bowlers erred in line and length and he was unable to get a grip on things. He (along with England’s team management) has also struggled to pick the right playing XI. Before the start of this ODI series, the England team’s confidence was soaring after drubbing world champions India both in the ODI’s and Tests. But after three straight losses here they have got very little to cheer about. So far this series has only helped in rebuilding the confidence of the Indian team and in denting the morale of the English unit. A 5-0 rout seems well and truly on now. India are back at the venue where they created history and they are going to be very difficult to stop. From the Indian team’s perspective, this series is serving a very useful purpose. But for the England team this same series is turning out to be a highly forgettable one. |
No ‘revenge’ in sports: Dhoni
Mohali, October 21
After defeating the English team in the third ODI at Mohali on Thursday night, Dhoni was seen pleased with the performance of team and dedicated the win to the top-order batsmen. “It is important that the youngsters should come up and stay on the field till 20 or 25 overs,” Dhoni had said after the match. “Once they become regular part of the team, it will easier for them to play even under pressure. “It’s not like we cannot go up and bat but there is a need to groom them. To be consistent at 6 or 7 down is very difficult. It is one of the places where Yuvi has done well in his career. The conditions here are completely on our side but back in England our spinners failed to achieve much,” said Dhoni. On the issue of injuries he said: “We are hoping that the side will catch up soon. The all-rounders play an important role and give extra strength to team, so the team is looking for Yuvi and other players.” “The word ‘revenge’ is very harsh to use in sports. I do not think this word should ever be used,” was his reaction when asked if the team has taken ‘revenge’ of recent loss in England. |
Drug menace
Patiala, October 21 As many as 20 men players out of 51 had tested positive for Stanozolol, Boldenone, Nandrolone and Phentermine (stimulant) and the Punjab Government had immediately banned them and issued instructions to the selectors regarding relieving them from the camp currently underway at Bathinda. National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) Director General Rahul Bhatnagar, speaking on the issue, said that NADA had taken samples of 43 women players and the reports of this would be out on Monday. “I am glad that the Punjab Sports Department has banned the players who had been tested positive because it is only through the cooperation of sports federations that one can make sports dope-free. Moreover, once these players are banned, other players would be scared to indulge in this practice in future,” he added. He further said that NADA would not tolerate any kind of doping practice in this event as this was a question of reputation. “We have already started gearing up for this cup and would take samples of every player,” added Bhatnagar. The World Cup would begin from November 1. This time, the event would be for both men’s and women’s teams. The selection trials for the Indian men’s team would be held from October 3 to 5 and for the women’s team on October 14 and 15 at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana. The first match would be played at Bathinda on November 1 and the final match would be held at Ludhiana on November 20. These matches would be played in 17 districts of Punjab, including Patiala, Jalandhar, Muktsar, Sangrur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Gurdaspur, Mansa, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Moga, Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran and Ludhiana. |
SC allows F1, wants 25% sale proceeds reserved
New Delhi, October 21 A bench of justices D K Jain and A R Dave in an interim order directed that the amount would be subject to the final outcome of a plea challenging tax exemptions accorded to the organisers of the Formula 1 race. The apex court rejected the arguments of the organisers that the direction would act as a dampener and cause adverse publicity since it was an international event. "How can it be a dampener or cause adverse publicity we do not understand?," the bench remarked while passing the order. — PTI |
Eves draw with Aussies
Perth, October 21 Star forward Ashleigh Nelson put Australia ahead in the 10th minute before her Indian counterpart Soundarya Yandala cancelled it out just five minutes before the hooter went off. It was Vandana Kataria who tore through the Australian defence to enter the top of the circle and quickly push the ball to Yandala, who was waiting at the far corner of the goal cage. Indian girls, who lost the last match 0-5 here last Saturday to the hosts, can derive a lot of satisfaction in the end result even though they did not inspire much confidence in the first half. In fact, the Indians were lucky to concede just a solitary goal in the first half, during which Australia mounted several attacks on the visiting team's goal. The Australians just could not get the finishing right and were also denied by Indian goalkeeper Yogita Bali's brilliance under the bar. — PTI |
National Tennis: Stage set for title matches
New Delhi, October 21 In the semi-finals played at the DLTA courts here today, Punjab lad Fatehdeep thwarted a second set comeback by third seed Jude Raymond before winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, while Karan defeated Deepak Vishwakarma 6-2, 6-2. In the first semi-final of under-6 girls’ singles, Simran’s strong baseline game kept 12th seed Teertha Iska on her toes as she smashed her way into the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Nayanika Reddy’s sore ankle did not allow her to go all out against 10th seed Tarranum as the Delhi girl came out victorious 6-3, 6-2. Simran dominated the proceedings right through and capitalised on the two break points she got against Teertha in the last game of the match to seal the issue. Nayanika, who ousted top-seed Snehadevi Reddy on Thursday, could not carry forward her impressive campaign ahead and her ankle, which troubled her throughout the match, did not help her cause either. In the under-14 boys’ singles, top-seed Sachin Kumar thrashed B.R. Nikshep 6-1, 6-3 to set up a title clash with Dhruv Pal, who had to fight hard against Vishu Prasad before winning at 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Nayanika will fight for the under-14 girls’ title when she takes on Pranjala Yadlapalli. Nayanika defeated Vanshika Sawhney 6-1, 6-2, while Pranjala overcame a stiff challenge from Akshara Iska to win the semi-final 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. In the under-16 boys’ doubles final, Karan Salwan and Dhruv Agarwal won against Gagan Sharma and Deepak Vishwakarma 6-0,7-5 while in the girls’ doubles, Snehadevi Reddy and Dhruti Venu Gopal won against Amita Pandey and Simran Kaur Sethi 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. In the under-14 boys’ doubles final, Ravi Raswant and Aryan Goveas (seeded two) won against B.R. Nikshep and Alex Solanki 6-4,6-4 while in the girls’ title clash, Shruta K Gunuganti and Pranjala Yadlapalli (seeded 2nd) from Tamil Nadu defeated Snehal Mane and Zeel Desai (seeds three) from Maharashtra 6-2, 7-5. |
Salgaocar face Dempo in opener
Margao, October 21 Coach Armando Colaco returns to the club after being the interim coach of the national team and said the side will aim to get the early momentum. "We are going in as underdogs as we haven't got the right start and the players are rusty as they need to play a couple of matches before settling down. We have never got a good start in the past and will be looking for a win tomorrow to get the early momentum going," stated Colaco. "Every team in the I-League is playing for the title. I always want to save ourselves from relegation first and then we take each game at a time." "On the other hand, Salgaocar started the season brightly winning the Federation Cup which have lifted their morale. We have to play to our potential for a win," summed up Colaco. Dempo will lack creativity in the midfield in the absence of Beto and it will take some time before newcomer Densill Tabaldo settles down with the team. — PTI |
