Jalandhar, October 20 The mishap occurred when a bus, owned by the CT Group, rammed into a stationary truck from behind on the highway and a Xylo trailing the bus too dashed into it thus resulting in a three-vehicle pile up. Eyewitnesses and the injured revealed that the bus (PB-08BN-8006), with over 55 students on board, was on its way to the institute campus in Shahpur village when it rammed into the truck (HR-68A-4490), stationed in the middle of the road. Six bus occupants, including five students and a conductor, sustained injuries, two of them serious, in the mishap, claimed Kuldeep Singh, a transport in charge of the institutes. All the injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital from where four victims, who sustained minor injuries, were discharged after preliminary medicare. Vishal Kumar, a first-year student of mechanical engineering, and Sarabjot Singh, bus conductor, who were seriously injured, have been hospitalised. Doctors attending on the injured revealed that Vishal Kumar, a resident of Tanda in Hoshiarpur, has been admitted with a fractured pelvis while Sarabjot Singh has sustained head injuries. Hanit Kaushal, a second-year student of mechanical engineering, and Manjot Singh, a second-year student of electrical engineering, were also admitted to the hospital, but were discharged soon after. Both the injured are also residents of Tanda. Students revealed that the bus driver was following another bus (a mini-bus) of the same institute. As the driver of the mini-bus managed to negotiate between the stationary truck and the road divider, the driver of the ill-fated bus failed to judge the passage and rammed his vehicle into the truck. Ramandeep Singh, driver of the Xylo, who was on his way to receive his brother at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, recalled that the bus driver first tried to overtake the truck from the left side but suddenly took a right turn. The traffic on the busy highway was also disrupted for over an hour following the accident. The injured were taken to the hospital, while the students who sustained minor and internal injuries were shifted to other buses of the group and taken to the institute campus. The investigating officer, ASI Mulkh Raj, said no case was registered in this regard as the authorities of the CT Groups of Institutes were not interested in any police case. |

The MC office has also put up a board at its entrance regarding four services, including birth and death certificates, building completion certificates and getting water connections. The board mentions the designation and mobile phone numbers of the designated officials. The names of the appellate authority have also been mentioned in another column. A board regarding awareness about the Act was also seen outside the office of the District Transport Officer. There are nine services mentioned under the Act, including the issuance of learner’s and regular driving licence, renewal of licences, registration of new vehicles, issuing permits to auto-rickshaws and school buses, issuing vehicle tax clearance certificates and changing of ownership of vehicles. Divisional Commissioner Anurag Verma said after a round to the offices on Friday, he had even called all the officials concerned of the districts falling under the division for video-conferencing and issued them directions regarding the display of information about the Act outside their offices. He said he asked the officials to click pictures of the same by their mobile phones, upload them on a computer and post them to him. “I have been getting pictures of the same,” he said.
