Campaign message fine, but spirit lacking

The daughter-in-law of Chief Minister and MP from Bathinda, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, had launched “Nanhi Chan” campaign to spread the message of saving the girl child and plant saplings. But, ironically, the authorities uprooted five saplings of “imli” and jamun during the preparations for the “Dheeyan da mela” to be inaugurated at Government College for Women tomorrow.

An 87-year-old man allegedly shot his 50-year-old daughter-in-law following a heated argument over a petty issue at Barmalipur village near Khanna yesterday.

Police has arrested a man who abducted the five-year-old brother of a girl and took him to Uttar Pradesh so he could marry the girl. The police rescued Panchu, son of a labourer, Mansuran Thakur, from the clutches of the kidnapper here today. The accused has been identified as Sonu Verma. He told the police that he had been visiting the house of Mansuran for the last few months.

9 pollution centres found cutting corners

After a Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) survey revealed that vehicular pollution was the main reason for making Ludhiana the most polluted city in the country, board officials conducted a surprise check at pollution under check (PUC) centres of the district.

Ever since Indian women have won accolades in beauty pageants, city-based girls and women have developed a tendency to reduce their weight and look thinner. For achieving this goal, they avoid nutritious food and prefer coffee without milk. This leads to appetite loss and deprives them of a balanced diet. Though they remain mentally active but their muscle and fat keep them thin.

Devinder Khurana, a 60-year-old cancer patient, who was falsely booked in an assault case on May 22, 2010, can, now, heave a sigh of relief. The city police today submitted a cancellation report after charges filed against him turned out to be a false.

22 trained in prawn farming at GADVASU

A two-day training programme on “Skill Development in Freshwater Prawn Farming” was organised by the Department of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU). At least 22 farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh attended the programme.

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) will organise a dog show on October 30. The show will be organised at the Silver Jubilee Complex of College of Veterinary Science. Dr Kirti Dua, Head, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, said dogs of different breeds from northern India would compete in the show.

The GCTA unit of Government College for Women and SCD Government College organised a two-hour protest in support of their demands including payment of arrears to teachers.

Slogan writing and painting competition
Ludhiana: NCC unit of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, organised a painting and slogan writing contest for creating consciousness about the environmental protection, human rights and communal harmony among the cadets. 30 cadets participated in the competitions. The Theme for the painting competition was ‘Let us save this Earth’ and for slogan writing competition it was “One contribution that I can make to, make a better world is?”

A “Science Fest” was organised at Bal Bharati Public School here today. Brain-teasing and model-making contests were organised as a part of the fest. Students of class third to fifth made working models on various topics like water cycle, bioscope, kaleidoscope, white light is made of seven colours, windmill, formation of day and night, natural calamities like volcano and earthquake, water level indicator to save water and artificial satellite.

Four vehicle thieves arrested
Khanna, October 20
The local police claims to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves with the arrest of its members, including a woman. The gang was active in Khanna and its surrounding areas for the past several months and had stolen about a dozen vehicles. Former sarpanch of Harbanspura village Surmukh Singh was kingpin of the gang. Another member has been identifies as Parvinder Singh Babu.

Rolls of astroturf lying at the Olympian Prithpal Singh Hockey Stadium in PAU. Preparations for the Kabaddi World Cup is delaying other ongoing projects undertaken by the Sports Department of Punjab. Thus, hockey enthusiasts will have to wait for some more time as Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Stadium at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has missed yet another deadline.
