State Cong to dissect Hisar rout today
Will heads roll this time to send out the right signal?
Geetanjali Gayatri/TNS

Chandigarh, October 20
After the Hisar defeat, it will be analysis time for the Haryana Congress when it meets tomorrow. Nothing unusual in the Congress and for partymen, who assign reasons, knowing full well that nothing comes out of such rituals which are a norm as no heads ever roll.

That probably explains why the Congress is yet to initiate action in over 24 complaints of anti-party activity received by the state unit even two years after the Assembly elections got over.

Sources maintain that the Congress, immediately after the Assembly election in 2009, had received over 26 complaints against sitting MPs and MLAs. The complaints of candidates who had lost the election not only underlined the fact that fellow Congresspersons were responsible for their defeat but even named them.

These complaints were forwarded to the national unit of the party after which neither the state unit hears of them nor any action, even in terms of hearing the complaints, ever been initiated.

The state Congress chief, Phool Chand Mullana, admitted that he was clueless about the fate of those complaints. “The state unit is not authorised to act on complaints against senior leaders, including MPs and MLAs. We are toothless in that sense. We compiled the complaints and forwarded these to the central leadership. We have received no information since then,” he says.

Mullana, who too had alleged being a “victim” of internal sabotage which cost him his election, says that any action on the complaints has to come from the central leadership. He admits that lack of action does not send out the right signal.

“Our hands are tied. For some complaints, we even gave our recommendations but nothing has come of it so far. I agree that complaints should be acted upon and disposed of so that those indulging in anti-party activity get the right signal,” he claims.

On tomorrow’s meeting on the Congress debacle in Hisar, Mullana said the state unit would compile all reasons for the defeat of Congress candidate Jai Prakash, who lost his security deposit also, based on the feedback by workers and senior leaders.

“We will forward this report to the central leadership. It is for the central leadership to take remedial steps and get back to us on executing these,” he said.

However, Congress leaders maintain that tomorrow’s meeting is a convention that needs to be adhered to and no kind of shake-up for reduced margins from various Assembly segments is expected.

Ajay Chautala to shift base to Hisar
Raman Mohan
Tribune News Service

Hisar, October 20
The calm that returned to the city after the raucous campaign for the Hisar Lok Sabha byelection is about to be shattered shortly. Ajay Chautala, who contested the byelection unsuccessfully, would soon be shifting base here permanently. The shift promises to hot up the political scene in the city.

The city already has a long list of senior politicians residing here. Kuldeep Bishnoi, who humbled his arch foe, Chautala, lives here. Senior Congress leader Sampat Singh lives in a neighbouring house. Union minister Selja has her ancestral house in the city. Mother and son duo - Savitri and Navin Jindal, have a palatial house here. Now Ajay Chautala plans to shift to a house in the local Urban Estate .

Though Ajay has a house in Sirsa, he had set up base in Bhiwani after he contested the Bhiwani Lok Sabha seat in 1998. Ajay’s planned shift to Hisar comes after he was touted as an outsider by his opponents during the campaign.

The decision is, in fact, prompted by realpolitik. Despite his defeat in the recent byelection, Ajay managed to completely woo the Jats back to his party. This is no mean achievement. Understandably, he is keen to retain his hold with the Assembly poll just three years ahead. Besides, having reduced the Congress to ashes, he will spare no effort to keep that party in a shambles.

By shifting to Hisar, Ajay, whom his party cadre considers as the future Chief Minister, has given a clear indication that he plans to counter Bishnoi’s efforts to provide non-Jats in Haryana a political alternative in the company of the BJP.

In fact, he has already levelled a serious allegation against Bishnoi that he had a secret meeting with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda before the polling day. Bishnoi was quick to deny the charge. The oral duel is just the beginning of fireworks.

Disproportionate Assets Case Against Chautala
CBI asked to give documents to ED

New Delhi, October 20
The CBI has been directed by a Delhi court to provide the Enforcement Directorate (ED) its documents relating to a disproportionate assets case against former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala to help the latter's probe into a money-laundering case against him.

Special CBI Judge Rajiv Mehra's order came on a plea by the ED seeking CBI documents for probing a case against Chautala registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

“The application is allowed, permitting the Directorate of Enforcement to obtain the certified copies as per the process of law,” said the court. The ED had sought the CBI documents relating to the excess assets case against Chautala in a plea filed on September 13 through its Special Public Prosecutor Naveen Kumar Matta.

Chautala is facing trial for allegedly possessing wealth exceeding his legal income here. The CBI had on March 26 last year filed the charge sheet against Chautala, indicting him for possessing assets worth Rs 6.09 crore, far exceeding his legal income, between 1993 and 2006. The charge sheet had said Chautala's wealth was 189 per cent more than his income of Rs 3.22 crore during the period.

The CBI had registered the case against Chautala in April 2006 and searched his 24 premises in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh. — PTI

Murder on Kurukshetra University campus
Seven booked; police steps up investigations
Manish Sirhindi
Tribune News Service

Kurukshetra, October 20
The district police has zeroed in on seven persons, whose names have figured in the FIR, who are believed to have been involved in the Virender Kakrhoh murder. Kakrhoh was shot dead by some unidentified persons on the Kurukshetra University campus on Monday evening. However, no arrests have been made in the case so far as the involvement of the accused is yet to be verified.

Sources privy to the investigations revealed that the eye-witnesses, who were present at the crime scene, had named seven persons, including a member of the Kaithal Zila Parishad and his brother.

Following this, the police started investigations in the case. They said after obtaining the phone numbers of the accused, their phone call details were being scrutinised to ascertain wether they were present on the KU campus on the fateful day or not.

DSP, headquarters, Bhupinder Singh, who had been heading the investigating team, said it would be inappropriate to name any of the accused as their involvement in the case was yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, going through the records of the KU, it was found that Kakrhoh was not a student of the university as was being believed earlier. He had taken admission in the MA philosophy course a few years back, but as of now he was staying in one of the hostels on the university campus illegally.

Further inquiries carried out by this correspondent revealed that there were nine different cases registered against Kakrhoh at Kurukshetra while four more were registered at Jind, his home town, and some at Kaithal. Since the names of a few residents of Kaithal and Jind had cropped up in the investigations, the police was verifying these cases. It is now trying to establish whether there is any link between the cases registered against Kakrhoh and the persons who are the prime accused in his murder case.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that before executing the crime, those involved had conducted a though recce of the campus and had planned the shooting well in advance. The police said the fact that the miscreants escaped from the campus without being intercepted by the university security testified to the fact that the assailants were aware that they could kill Kakrhoh and escape too.

DSP Bhupinder Singh said investigations were on track and a major breakthrough was expected soon.

Ambala, October 20

Khoya, sweets samples taken
Tribune News Service

Sirsa/Fatehabad, October 20
The health authorities raided some cold- storage plants in Fatehabad, where several quintals of khoya and some other sweets were taken into possession today. The team headed by the Deputy Civil Surgeon, Dr HL Gupta, and Government Food Inspector Mahabir Singh took four samples of the sweets.

Gupta said khoya, rasgullas and gulab jamuns, belonging to different sweet houses of the town, were found stored in huge trunks in the storage plant.

He said the sweets belonged to local shopkeepers Thara Ram Sweets, Pardesi Sweets, Bikaner Sweets and a firm from the local Ratia octroi post.

The health authorities have taken samples and have sent those for testing.

Similarly, the health authorities have taken five samples of khoya and sweets at Sirsa during the past three days, said Dr Daya Nand, Civil Surgeon, Sirsa.

Fake khoya and adulterated sweets from outside are flooding sweets shops in Sirsa and Fatehabad as Diwali draws closer.

In view of the increased demand of sweets during the festival season, scores of dealers from outside towns have been supplying ready made sweets and khoya to sweet shops in the two towns.

Earlier this week, the health authorities had stopped vehicles carrying ‘patisa’ brought from Kaithal and ‘barfi’ brought from Hansi. The health authorities suspected that these sweets were fake and adulterated and had taken samples for testing.

Dr Daya Nand said the health authorities were vigilant and had been keeping a close watch so that adulterated sweets did not find their way to the shops.

FARIDABAD: In joint raids conducted by the Health Department and the police on Thursday, samples of ‘khoya’ were collected from three shops.

DK Sharma, District Food and Safety Officer, said 10 of the 16 samples collected so far had already been sent to a government laboratory.

The raids were conducted in the Badkhal area and Fatehpur Biloch village.

Sharma said the drive would continue till Diwali. Though the track record regarding the use of spurious ‘khoya’ was comparatively better in the district, the authorities were not taking any chance.

MSP for wheat inadequate, says BJP
Sushil Manav
Tribune News Service

Fatehabad, October 20
The BJP today held a demonstration and submitted a memorandum to the authorities demanding a better deal for farmers in the procurement of their crops. Led by Subhash Barala, state president of the BJP Kisan Morcha, the BJP activists staged a dharna outside the mini- secretariat and then went inside the building to give a memorandum of their demands to the authorities.

In a memorandum given to the ADC, Ashok Garg, the BJP activists demanded Rs 500 as bonus on the purchase of paddy in the state.

The BJP said the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 1,350 announced by the government for wheat was quite inadequate.

The party said the cost of production of wheat was nearly Rs 1,200 per quintal and even if the government added 50 per cent as profit of the farmers, they deserved to get Rs 1,800 as the MSP of wheat.

The BJP leaders demanded rollback in the prices of DAP fertilisers, which, they alleged, had gone up by Rs 200 per bag during the past some days.

Castigating the authorities in the delay in the purchase of ‘bajra’ crop, the BJP demanded immediate start of the procurement.

Molu Ram Rulania, district president of the BJP, Bharat Bhushan Midha, general secretary, and Hans Raj Siwach, president of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti of Gorakhpur farmers agitating against nuclear power plant coming up there, were among those who accompanied Barala in the BJP’s demonstration.
