india v eng ODI Series
Selectors forced to pick depleted side

Chennai, September 28
The national selectors will be forced to name a depleted Indian squad for the first two one-dayers against England with many top players, including Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, unlikely to be available for selection because of injuries.

Apart from Tendulkar and Yuvraj, there is also a question mark over Virender Sehwag's fitness alongwith a host of other players who suffered injuries during India's disastrous tour of England recently.

While the selectors, who meet on Thursday, may find the replacements in the batting department, the bowling unit is of more concern as three premier speedsters in Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel are out of contention.

The first two games of the five-match ODI series against England will be played in Hyderabad on October 14 and New Delhi on October 17. The other matches will be held in Mohali (Oct 20), Mumbai (Oct 23) and Kolkata (Oct 25).

Tendulkar, who was ruled out of the last ODI series in England due to a toe injury, is yet to play a match in the Champions League Twenty20 and indications are that he may miss out the first two matches.

Sehwag, who had hearing problems as well as recuperating from shoulder surgery, may also have to sit out of the first two one-dayers though there is still no clear indication on his fitness status.

The good news is that Gautam Gambhir has recovered fully and he has now played two matches for KKR in the ongoing Champions League and should be back in the team.

Similarly Harbhajan Singh's name would also come up for consideration as the stand-in captain of Mumbai Indians appeared to have regained full fitness from the stomach injury as he has contributed with both bat and ball.

Among the batsmen, the certainties are skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Parthiv Patel and young Ajinkya Rahane. With Rohit Sharma yet to recover from his fractured finger, Manoj Tiwary who was rushed on SOS during last England series is likely to retain his place along with Subramanium Badrinath.

The bowling still remains a concern as save Praveen Kumar, none of the other premier fast bowlers are fit. Although paceman Ashish Nehra's name is doing the rounds, he has not played a single competitive match since World Cup semifinal against Pakistan. But with the team in desperate need for some experience, the services of the 32-year-old left-arm seamer with 120 ODIs behind his may be sought.

The name of Karnataka left-arm seamer Sreenath Aravind, who has impressed for RCB in T20 format, could also come up discussion when the selectors meet on Thursday. For the third seamer's role, the likes of R Vinay Kumar, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, Ashok Dinda will be fighting for the pace-bowling slots.

Among the spinners, Harbhajan Singh and Ashwin may both find place in the line-up along with Ravindra Jadeja who will be the lone all-rounder in side with his handy batting and slow left-arm orthodox. left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was also in the fray. — PTI

Federation Cup Soccer
EB, Salgaocar face-off in final

Kolkata, September 28
Twice lucky on their road to the third successive Federation Cup football final, two-time defending champions East Bengal will take on I-League winners Salgaocar in the title clash of the 33rd edition of the tournament, here tomorrow.

The much-awaited encounter between the two sides — both have already qualified for the AFC Cup on the the basis of their performance in the I-League and the ongoing tournament respectively — will be a repeat of the summit clash in 1997 when the Goans prevailed 2-1.

Cut to this edition, East Bengal did not look convincing in their wins, with dubious refereeing in their match against Dempo and Prayag United SC playing a role in their passage to the final.

The reigning I-League champions, on the other hand, have been clinical in their approach and are yet to concede a goal after four matches (three in quarterfinal group league and one in semifinal). More than winning the title, the final will give East Bengal coach James Morgan an opportunity to set the record straight against a side, which pipped his boys for the I-League crown last season.

However, it will not be easy for the Englishman as he will have to make do with a half-fit Mehtab Hussain, the playmaker who gives thurst to East Bengal's attack. Hussain, who has been chosen the 'Best Player' of the country recently, is grappling with a groin injury that ruled him out of the semifinal, along with defender Raju Gaikwad.

Known for his bold decisions, it will be interesting to see Morgan's ploy in case Hussain and Gaikwad fail the fitness test before kick-off. In their last match, Morgan was not afraid to bench the seasoned Orji Penn in place of new recruit Alan Gow. It's a move that did not pay immediate result but Morgan persisted with the duo as United SC faltered before conceding two red cards. — PTI

Patiala, September 28
Defying all odds, city lad Rajesh Arora has finally managed to fulfill his dream of representing India during the Mr. World and Mr. Universe Bodybuilding Championship (75 kg weight category) that would be held at Austria from November 2.

Hailing from an economically weak family, 26-year-old Rajesh is the youngest of three siblings. He started bodybuilding at the age of 16. “I saw people who had good bodies and wanted to be like them,” he said. “I started bodybuilding on my own but later gave up as I could not afford the diet.

“Even my parents were very upset when I expressed my desire of pursuing bodybuilding as a career because we could not even afford proper meals for the family. One day I decided that I would start again and so I took up a small job. I had to discontinue my studies because I could either afford to study or do this. Later, I took financial help from relatives and opened a gym which helped me sustain my bodybuilding. Now I am not only practicing but have also resumed my studies,” he added.

Rajesh is currently doing his M.PEd. from the National College of Physical Education, Chupki, which is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala. Taking about his professional achievements, Rajesh said that his first success was winning the Mr. Mohindra College title in 2004 and then he became Mr. Patiala in 2005. He then won the title of 2005 Mr. Junior Punjab in 2005 and Mr. North India in 2008. He has won two gold medals during the All-India Inter-University Bodybuilding Championships as well.

About his selection for the Mr. World and Mr. Universe Championships, Rajesh said it a dream come true. Giving the credit of his achievement to his trainer, Anil Raj from Gurdaspur, Rajesh said that more than 110 bodybuilders from across the country had participated in the selection trials held at Pathankot.

Rajesh Arora“I secured first place and reserved my berth for this tournament. Now that I have got an opportunity, I will make the most of it. Had the Government provided me facilities before, I would already have done something big at international level but I guess it’s time to think about positive things now,” he added.

Manchester United collapsed against Basel before salvaging a 3-3 draw in the Champions League on Tuesday while Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 victory over Ajax.

The drama at Bayern Munich took place off the pitch with Carlos Tevez refusing to come on for Manchester City during its 2-0 loss. Tevez's former club United threw away a 2-0 halftime lead against Basel and the three-time champions required Ashley Young's 90th-minute header to recover a second successive draw in Group C.

Real Madrid swept aside Ajax after goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema in the Group D meeting of two sides with 13 European Cups between them.

Inter Milan picked up its first points in Group B after Mauro Zarate clinched a 3-2 win at CSKA Moscow but Trabzonspor stays top after drawing 1-1 with Lille.

At Old Trafford, United did not appear to miss its injured first-choice strike force of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez.

The 20-year-old Danny Welbeck scored twice in two minutes in the first half to put United 2-0 up by the 17th minute, with 37-year-old Ryan Giggs providing both goals. But United's defense crumbled in the second half after Fabian Frei pulled Basel's first goal back in the 58th minute. Alexander Frei headed Basel level two minutes later after meeting Fabian Frei's cross and then put the Swiss champion in front from the penalty spot in the 76th after Antonio Valencia fouled Marco Streller.

But Young produced a late leveler, sending a downward header into the net after meeting Nani's cross. — AP
