Downpour disaster
Sewage spreads over 4.5 acres as chamber wall collapses

Jalandhar, July 15
The downpour that lashed the city areas early this morning led to the collapsing of a wall of a sewer chamber in the Chogitti area.

The chamber was constructed by the Punjab Water Supply and Sewer Department to connect the drainage from the adjoining Bashirpur area to the main disposal at Pholariwal. The smelly discharge came gushing into a dug-up trench creating problem for the residents and passersby in the area.

The 15-foot-deep trench got filled up and water and sewage spread in 4.5 acres. As this happened, MLA Manoranjan Kalia and councillor Manjinder Chatha visited the site and ordered immediate action for containing the discharge and not allowing it to spread further toward the nearby colonies.

Chatha said the water was coming up with much force even in the evening and they were waiting for the pressure to reduce so that the repair work could start. “My house and a resort are also located near the site. Thankfully there was a trench nearby as the earth had been dug up decades back to construct a bridge atop the Pathankot railway crossing or else this water could have caused a lot of problems,” he said.

Health officials from the MC also reached the spot and ordered the spraying of medicines on the discharged water to check spread of diseases and insects in the area.
