Jalandhar, June 27
Agitated over the delay in the promotion of Scheduled Caste (SC) lecturers as principals, members of the Scheduled Caste Employees Joint Action Committee has decided to sit on a fast unto death in case the Department Promotion Committee (DPC) list of the Education Department is not released within 15 days.

The committee members have also written to the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes highlighting the delay by the Education Department in not releasing the DPC list after its meeting, which was held on May 10, 2011.

The committee members would now conduct a convention in this regard on July 16 and gherao the Education Minister’s house and further stage a state-level protest at Lambi.

Gurmail Singh Chandarh said more than a month had passed and the state Education Department was yet to release the final DPC list. “This shows the mala fide intention of the Education Department in promoting the SC school lecturers as principals,” he added.

The SC lecturers also criticised the Education Minister for claiming to have promoted 1,500 lecturers of government schools as principals. “The Education Minister also claimed that another 4,500 lecturers would be promoted soon. But, the ground reality is that nobody has been promoted till date,” he added.

Further terming the claims of the Education Minister as election stunt, the lecturers said, “Assembly elections are a few months away and soon the election code of conduct would be enforced during which no promotion policies can take place. The Education Department should consider our grievance on priority,” they said.

Gyan Sultanpuri, another member, said more than 700 government schools of the state were functioning without regular principals and this had been a major reason behind the downfall of the standard of education in the government schools.

“Owing to poor promotional policy many senior SC lecturers retired awaiting promotions as principals and others are on the verge of retirement. The state Education Department will have to release the DPC list, else it will ruin the future of scores of SC lecturers in the state,” said Sultanpuri.

Earlier also, it was due to the joint efforts of committee members and the National Scheduled Caste Commission that junior lecturers were promoted as principals in the state on February 15, 2010. Even the Punjab and Haryana High Court had also taken notice of the vacant posts of principal and directed the Education Department to appoint principals with immediate effect. “Surprisingly the state Education Department did not adhere to the court orders as well and the promotions are pending till date,” quipped Chandarh.
