CII to improve employability of PTU students
Jalandhar, June 21 He said the CII had already worked with Delhi University (DU) and it would like to work with other educational institutions of different states to improve the employability of the youth. Thandani, accompanied by CII Punjab chairperson Kamna Agarwalla, said the industry was not short of employment but it was short of employable skilled youth. As many as 3.5 lakh students were already doing various courses in the institutions affiliated with the PTU and the number of students would rise to five lakh by the end of this year, he said, adding that the CII would do whatever it could to improve their employability. To a query, Thandani and Kamna said a team of experts would come to Jalandhar and Ludhiana within a month from the CII ITC sustainable development, Delhi, to suggest ways to minimise pollution caused by industries of both the districts. The CII took congnisance at its own of the recent developments in Jalandhar regarding releasing of effluents into Kala Sanghia drain, they said, adding that the expert team would meet the industrialists and the representatives of the district administration to find out ways to minimise pollution. On this occasion, Kamna said the CII would hold Punjab Show in Amritsar in October this year. Big players from across the country would be invited in this show, she added. Kamna further stated that the CII would meet different political parties to get included industry related issues into their manifestos for the forthcoming Assembly elections scheduled to be held in February next year. |

Villagers help police arrest cable thief
Nawanshahr, June 21 SSP Narinder Bhargav, while lauding the gesture of the residents of Naura village, told mediapersons here today that the Sadar police station received a phone call from Malkeet Singh of Naura village at 2.30 am in the morning that village residents had been keeping a vigil on the electricity transformers and cables to check the growing incidents of theft. During patrolling they saw some cut pieces of the cable near the cold storage and about seven-eight miscreants had been loading cables on their Tata 407 and a Qualis on the Banga-Garhshanker road. On seeing the villagers, the miscreants fled in their vehicle. However, the villagers followed them in their own vehicle. Having got the information, the police immediately sprung into action and succeeded in intercepting the Qualis at Bsardhana village near Samrala in Ludhiana district. While one of the accused identified as Lakhwinder Singh, alias Lakha, of Jalandhar was nabbed with the help of the people, his accomplice Pal of Jalandhar managed to escape. “The modus operandi of the gang is that they travel in their car during daytime to identify the site from where the cables can be cut and stolen easily. Then during the night they cut the cable and load it in the Tata 407 and sell the same at the rate of Rs 4,800 per quintal in Jalandhar,” said Bhargav adding that the police had registered a case under Section 379. |

Amritsar, June 21 The department seized more than 62,400 capsules, 31,000 tablets and 488 bottles of cough syrups during the raids conducted in two days, said Dr Chandanjit Singh Kondal, Civil Surgeon here today. Dr Kondal said the team raided the premises of Senor Pharmaceuticals in Katra Sher Singh last evening in which majority of the intoxicants were seized. He said the owner of the store could not produce the sale and purchase bills. He said the department was receiving complaints regarding the sale of intoxicants by the company. He said the team also raided Guru Nanak Medical Store at Khandwala and Virdi Pharma in Katra Sher Singh today. He said cases were registered and the seized material would be produced in the court. — TNS |
