Cancellation of land acquisition
Greater Noida, June 22 Some builders are also learnt to have moved the apex court against the high court decision. On May 12, the Allahabad High Court cancelled the acquisition of 156 hectares in Shahbery village. The next day, acquisition of another 72 hectares in Surajpur village was denotified by the high court. On May 30, acquisition of 170 hectares in Gulistanpur was also cancelled. The biggest jolt to the Greater Noida Authority was the cancellation of the acquisition process itself. This created panic among the builders. The GNIDA intends to file 31 SLPs. Officials are compiling details of encroachments in the area notified by the Greater Noida Authority. These details will be presented before the apex court to explain the use of the emergency clause for the acquisition of land. Though the Greater Noida Authority has tried to persuade the farmers for direct sale of land to builders, so far only 12 farmers with a mere 4 hectares have given their consent for it. Having failed to convince the farmers for direct sale of land, the authority decided to move the SC.Farmers have filed 31 SLPs in the Allahabad High Court against land acquisition in Shahbery. The authority will also file 31 SLPs in the apex court within a day or two, officials said. |

MCD, govt fight over control of industrial estates
New Delhi, June 22 "The Delhi Industrial Development Operation and Maintenance Act was passed by the Delhi Assembly in 2010 and has received the President's assent. The MCD has no right to even talk about it. In fact, the MCD is nowhere in the picture," said Ramakant Goswami, Delhi labour and industries minister. The DSIIDC is the agency of the Delhi government for development and maintenance of infrastructure in all industrial estates, including those being maintained by the MCD. At a recent meeting, the Union home ministry had directed the MCD to hand over the 22 industrial estates to the DSIIDC within three months. The civic agency has been opposing the move. "The mayor has no right to talk about the Act as she has nothing do with it. Why are they (MCD) opposing the move when they cannot maintain these estates, which are in a poor condition?" said Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi. She said that the agency would not hand over the industrial estates. Abbi had earlier said that the MCD would not let go of the industrial estates. "First they took the Delhi Transport Corporation from us, then they took the slum department and Delhi Jal Board. Now, they are bent on taking these estates which we maintain. Why don't they dissolve the corporation if they want everything in their hands?" said Abbi. "How will we maintain these estates when will have no funds? " Abbi lamented. However, Goswami said the government provided funds on a yearly basis. "Ever year, the Delhi government provides Rs 800 crore to the MCD. Where do these funds go," Goswami wondered. |

Houses sealed as irregularities found in urban residential scheme
Noida, June 22 A large number of allottees had used fraudulent means to acquire the houses. Some had sold these off or given the houses on rent. Action was taken against a dozen such allottees while the sword of Damocles seems hanging on a large number of allottees, sources said. During the financial year 2010-11, over 1,000 such houses were allotted to the poor in Gautam Budh Nagar district. Fifty per cent of these houses were built in Sector 45, Noida, while the other 500 units were built in Omikaran Sector in Greater Noida. Another 1,000 such houses are being constructed at both these sites in current financial year 2011-12. City Magistrate Sanjay Chauhan said after the probe, it came to the light that the original allottees were not living in the houses which were then sealed. Most of the houses were given on rent. These houses cannot be sold or put on rent according to the rules. District Magistrate Deepak Agarwal said after sealing a dozen houses in Noida, the district administration would launch a similar campaign to seal houses in Greater Noida. He said he had received many complaints that some un-bonafide people had fraudulently occupied the houses built under the scheme and misusing the premises. City Magistrate and the chief development officer, Sheetal Verma, were asked to conduct a probe into the matter in Noida and Greater Noida, respectively. They found that some un-bona fide people had acquired the houses and misusing the property. So, the allotment had been cancelled. Verma said over two dozen houses were occupied illegally. Anjana Srivastava, an aaganwadi official who lives in house No C111, said no notice or information was served on her before the house was sealed. She was not allowed to take out her belongings from the house before it was sealed by the administration. As a result, she was thrown on the road with her children. |
Delhi air polluted, says TERI study
New Delhi, June 22 The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is conducting this study to assess the energy and emissions scenarios for various states of India from 2005 to 2030. "Ozone monitoring is presently carried out in few cities only and the results in Delhi show that concentrations have violated the standards. It may cause significant damage to the agricultural yield in addition to its impact on human health," a TERI statement said. TERI found that cities like Delhi and Ghaziabad violate annual ambient air quality standards for particulate matter concentrations. "In recent years, few cities have also violated the annual average standard for NOx gases and there is a trend towards its increase. Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata have shown higher levels of NOx concentrations mainly because of rapid rise in vehicular fleet," it added. The statement goes on to add that among all the pollutants, particulate matter pollution is most widespread in Indian cities and is of prime concern. "However, pollutants like NOx and Ozone are emerging threats for future and proactive policies would be required for their control," it said.

RJs promoting Tihar’s Brand TJ
New Delhi, June 22 "We are improving the marketing tricks for the products. Let's see what kind of response we get from the consumers as the time progresses," Tihar Jail director general Neeraj Kumar said. Currently, the brand is being promoted with the help of newspapers and FM radio channels. The jail authorities are also pitching in retailers such as Mother Dairy to roll out the range of products to the consumers. The products recorded a turnover of Rs 15 crore last year. "A final go-ahead is needed for the products to be retailed in Mother Dairy outlets. It will be a new addition to the existing list of outlets," said Prateek Sharma, deputy superintendent (factory) at Tihar Jail. The jail is in the news daily for the high-profile prisoners within its high walls. It is the country's largest prison housing 12,231 inmates. The authorities at Tihar said it would take two to three months for products to become popular despite their aggressive marketing and advertising. The products include a range of food items like biscuits and snacks, clothings, handloom and textiles, furniture and home decor goods. "Some of the products have not reached the outlets," Kumar said. To bring the brand TJ closer to consumers, the Tihar authorities have zeroed in on Kendriya Bhandar outlets and the court complexes in the Capital. Some of the 35 outlets in the advertised list were the Delhi Secretariat's canteen, Delhi police headquarters' canteen, selected Kendriya Bhandar outlets, kiosks in the Delhi High Court and trial courts. One of the outlets, Khadi Gram Udyog Bhandar in Patparganj, east Delhi, has closed down, and the jail authorities admitted that it was an error to mention it in the advertisement. "We have checked with the factory authorities and have been informed that the Patparganj outlet will be taken off from the list," Kumar said. While the food products are finding buyers at the canteen of the police headquarters and kiosks at Delhi courts, the sales have not hit a high due to limited visitors there. "At the police headquarters' canteen and other government offices, only officials visit the canteens. The limited sales are expected," Kumar added. - IANS |

Govt to take details of Sikh voters from state voters’ list
New Delhi, June 22 The decision was taken today at a meeting called by minister, gurdwara elections, Arvinder Singh Lovely. The meeting was attended by DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna, National Akali Dal president Pamma, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leaders Manjit Singh (GK) and Avtar Singh Hit. About four lakh voters were listed for the last gurdwara elections. This year, only 1.5 lakh voters have been listed till now though the government has been registering voters for the past five months. The government will make efforts to register those who have come from other states and the youngsters who have attained the age of 18, the sources say. Pamma suggested that the work of preparing the voters' list should be done in a time-bound manner. Accepting his suggestion, the minister said within one or two days, the government would decide on a deadline for completing this work as the election of the gurdwara committee is to be held in the end of this year, sources say. Sarna said 3.80 lakh voters had registered themselves for the last gurdwara election. "According to the latest assembly electorate list, there are 8-9 lakh Sikh voters in Delhi. But so far, only 1.90 lakh voters have been registered," he added. Manjit Singh said the minister accepted that the preparation of voters' list was being delayed. |
Weight warning: Avoid crash diets
New Delhi, June 22 She is not the only one. Every day people are going on crash diets to meet immediate draconian goals, but experts warn it is equivalent to abusing your body. "This is a very common problem. Miracles don't happen in a day. One has to be persistent and dedicated in losing weight. But people don't want to work hard, they just want shortcuts. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to weight loss. You end up abusing your body," said Aashu, a gym trainer. "Most of the girls who come to me want to fit into their wedding lehenga. Then there are those who have been warned by doctors that they have to lose weight if they want to live long," said Aashu. Their shortcut to success is answered in yo-yo diet, described as an extreme form of losing weight. It has a cyclical pattern of weight loss and gain and often seen as a harmful weight-losing technique. Then there is all-protein diet or liquid diet option-- it helps to lose weight quickly, but leaves its side effects too. "There is no other way to lose weight so quickly than by going on crash dieting because you don't eat anything till you achieve the result. But in a short span of time you gain weight again because you have been depriving yourself of calories and food," said Ritika Samaddar, chief dietician at Max Healthcare Samaddar. Movie stars play an important role in common people's lives and the tale of gaining and losing weight to fit into the skin of characters is prevalent in Bollywood and Hollywood. Actor Christian Bale lost 28 kg in three months to enact the role of Trevor Reznick, a paranoid insomniac in "The Machinist", and right after that he had to bulk up for "The Dark Knight", for which he reportedly gained 45 kg in over six weeks. Similarly Abhishek Bachchan had gained 11 kg for "Guru" and Vinay Pathak had also piled on kilos for "Bheja Fry 2". But it doesn't do any good to the body, says Althea Shah, VP operations and fitness expert at Gold's gym, Mumbai. "Quick gaining and losing causes havoc with the metabolism. The body systems get adjusted to food patterns and take some time to change from a set routine. The digestion process gets affected if the body is put on crash diets or binge eating," said Shah. According to studies, a liquid diet high on protein may lead to headaches, fatigue and nausea. Protein-based liquid diet can also cause constipation because it lacks fibre. It can also cause loss of lean muscle mass and a decrease in metabolism. Hrithik Roshan, who had piled on 15 kilos to play a paraplegic in "Guzaarish" and binged on all sorts of junk food, said: "I didn't workout for six-seven months. After 15 years, I found out the taste of batata vada and samosas. I binged like anything. But when I was on this toxic programme, health took a very bad shape." When 53-year-old Arjun Jaivir realised he was suffering from breathing problems and was on the brink of having a heart attack, he decided to lose weight and went on "only lime-water" diet. He managed to lose weight and has maintained it till date, but his muscle strength is zero and he lacks stamina. Crash diets could lead to multiple side effects, says Mumbai-based fitness guru Sheru Aangrish, adding that problems like haggard look, dark under eyes, dull skin, sloppy posture and less stamina were very common among such people. "Quick weight loss is not healthy either because that leads to loss of more muscle mass than fat. The process of losing fat and gaining muscle may vary from individual to individual but there is no shortcut. I don't recommend to anyone instant weight gain or weight loss," he said. -- IANS |
