Ramp to role
At last, finally, as a final point…we have a model admit that acting is and will always be her first love! This means she doesn't think of modelling as an 'on the way' option to Tinselville. How nice it would be if people kept things straight!
Like Ankita Shorey, Miss India International 2011, who shells information on lights, camera and action, instead of lip syncing endless notes on the travails, tribulations and frills of being a model! Adjusting the designer gown created by the graduating students of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), Mohali, at the Anukama 11, annual design collection show, this beauty talks about her preparations for the Miss International pageant at China and movies, of course! She is almost gasping for breath, as she tells how busy she has been after winning the crown. An actor in the making, we could see! "Life has changed with the title of Miss India International. I am shooting and travelling all seven days. I guess, now I should just go underground and concentrate on the preparations. You know how crucial the last two months for the real show are," says Ankita, who has spent eight years in Ladakh where she has studied in a missionary school and attended a Buddhist monastery after school. Working on fitness, slipping into various costumes created by a selected panel of designers, Ankita feels that Indian beauties at international pageants have more strength to express themselves because of their sensitive nature. "Beauty shows are not about looks if you believe me, they are about a combination of communication skills, and knowledge on various global issues," she says. Ya, the Indian beauties-global concern-issues-and-a-lot more! Hey babe, weren't you suppose to be real, saying the heart thing. Maybe now you would. Let's talk about Bollywood, camera, working with all directors, and good looking hunks of the industry. Eyes shine, the curve on her petite face extends in breath… "I love acting. I want to live my life in front of the camera. Even before the pageant I was working towards becoming an actor," Ankita adds excitedly. The 24-year-old beauty has already shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in an advertisement for a cosmetics brand. "He has a great commercial appeal while Aamir has an experimental edge. I want to live my entire life in the industry and work with all directors; Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaaz Ali, Farhaan Akhtar; everybody is good." Ankita is all for total commercial as well as experimental films. "I think I can do all kinds of roles. I can do good character roles as well." Adds the beauty queen, "First things first, I have to prepare for the pageant first." We agree! jasmine@tribunemail.com I love acting. Even before the pageant I was working towards becoming an actor...I want to live my entire life in the industry and work with all directors; Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaaz Ali, Farhaan Akhtar; everybody is good |

What’s in a word…
Wud is minus the o and l, l8r has done away with a, t and e, BTW is the new found abbreviation of by the way, good is gud, cool is cul, before b4…luv is no more love. Luv is experimental, just as the emotion's new found spellings (read Luv ka The End and Kuchh Luv Jaisa). Lexicographers today are facing a stiff competition from generation Facebook, which shrinks every word to the minimum. In a paradox of sorts, a certain Sukanya Roy, an Indian American has won the National Spelling Bee competition in the US, which comes as a relief to language loyalists in India! So how much is too much when it comes to experimenting with the language? Is communication more important than following language rules? Neha Soi, Assistant Professor, MCMDAV College, doesn't mind tweaking words as long as it serves the purpose of communication. "Not every slang is a threat to our language. Had that been the case, we wouldn't have had so many of them added to the dictionaries. In fact, they help express better. End is always more important than the means." She adds that at the same time we need to be careful with the usage of words. "You can't expect the language to be accepted in academics. It's fine if people spell words as it suits them, but it's equally important to know the actual spellings." Experiments with the English language are not new. In fact, it has always depended on the style of the famous authors and poets. The reason: English was different in Shakespeare's Era as it was in Chaucer's, who set the stepping stone to modern English. Harpreet Gill, assistant professor in a college in Chandigarh, says, "English has never been a static language. It rather took years to standardise the spellings because the language was used worldwide. Cultures of various countries have affected its usage and have added a new dimension." She supports the SMS language, as it helps in effective communication. "We shouldn't forget the basic aim of language. Some people written as 'sum people' conveys the same meaning in an SMS," she adds. Use of SMS language is also seen in Bollywood. Beside the titles of the flicks, it's also in dialogues that the language is being used. Shah Rukh Khan's latest production, Always Kabhi Kabhi, shows in its promo a dialogue in the SMS language, "Undi the condi of my heart," which means understand the condition of my heart. About the use of casual language in films, Remo Fernandes, director of the film, FALTU says, "It makes the dialogues catchy. In the song, 4 baj gaye, lekin party abhi baki hai, we used a lot of slangs. Our target audience was youngsters and they could easily relate to the lyrics, which was our prime purpose." He adds that customising the language as per people's liking is the only way to popularise it. "Unless a language is understood by a layman, it would limit itself to the elite. With every generation, English will evolve." Experiment with the language also has a flip side to it. Sakshi Kaushik, a research scholar of the language, says, "In a bid to make language simple, youngsters might not take it very seriously. It's important to create a balance between simplifying the language and maintaining its originality." At the same time, the fact remains that it is Indian students who have done exceptionally well at the Spelling Bee contest in the last 13 years, which even she agrees to, "To some extent, it does indicate that Indian students realise the importance of correct English." A step in B-town
Hail Bollywood! Whether you want to be popular, non-popular, whether it is about making money or losing moolah; tons of controversies, silhouettes shining under archlights, some lost in oblivion… Bollywood is everything you would want it to be! Now if a designer wants to be popular, what do you have to do? Turn to Bollywood. Ace designer, INIFD student Sabah Khan is a name now. Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor is wearing a designer garment from Sabah Khan's collection Tuk Tuk for her latest appearance at a prestigious event. Hail Bollywood! She gives a faint smile. "Bollywood is a huge fashion industry, setting trends. And it also brings in noticeability for the designers if their garments are worn by actors or celebrities." This, however, is not a criterion with Sabah Khan. For sure, this designer doesn't design keeping celeb bods in mind! Her inspiration is always city-specific. Earlier, it was No Class, inspired by the slums of Dharavi, and designer Sabah Khan this time dedicated her new collection Tuk Tuk to the "rickshaw-wallas" at the Lakme Fashion Week. Designers and their knack of picking inspiration from things all and sundry! "Creativity is limitless, it can flow from anywhere. Also, I don't need to go to some isolated island, you can find it everywhere," adds Sabah Khan showing us her Tuk Tuk collection at INIFD-8, which she showcased at Lakme Fashion Week. Preparing for upcoming Fall Winter collection, Sabah sees no issues with umpteen fashion shows popping here and there. "Where else would the upcoming designers show their collections? It is a good thing; it gives an opportunity to many designers." INIFD student Sabah Khan is more experimental towards lifestyle and has explored the new trendy and funky thought of expression. Displaying a line of 16 outfits at Lakme Fashion Week, Sabah had a striking variety which ranged from cute bikinis to hot pants, dhoti dungarees, waist coats, T backs - all ideal for summer wear with many mix-and-match options. "You either are creative or you are not, but training from an institute like INIFD does help in shaping a perspective." jasmine@tribunemail.com |
Gyan Zone Rain might inspire the poetic lot, but for women it means dealing with a lot of problems when it comes to your hair. Sticky, limp, dull, dry and over the top frizzy hair tops the chart of monsoon beauty havoc. Though there is a little doubt that dull, lifeless hair can easily ruin your day, however, we have some cool hair tips and hair styles, which will make super frizzy and dry hair, beautiful, manageable and super lustrous. Lock(s) it!
The mantra is simple but we follow it little. Says Anju from Style Studio in Sector 6, Panchkula, says, "Shampoo and conditioning your hair with a good quality shampoo and conditioner is a must every time you get wet during the monsoons. Conditioner after a hair wash protects the hair from damage by reducing frizz to a great extent." She adds, "Anti-frizz treatment too is available these days. It is a permanent blow dry which lasts for almost three-four months and makes the hair manageable." Tipping that a drop of almond or morocon oil be added in the hair oil and massaged for better hair she says, "Henna should be avoided during the rains as it dry's the hair completely." "Pay heed to advice from a technically sound person and follow instructions," she says. Hair brushes too are not a good idea this season, stick to the great comb, it works the best to de- tangle knotty strands. Tress therapy
If you are not a saloon person then home remedies are a saviour this season. "Limp hair is a persistent problem during monsoons so to combat this, mix three teaspoons of olive and apricot oil. Overnight application will help and if not then add a few drops of lemon drops to make your hair beautiful as ever," says Betty Nangia, naturapath from Betty's holistic clinic in Sector 8. Two tablespoons of curd, kept outside for some time, mixed with three teaspoons of lime juice applied as a conditioner after shampoo too is a good idea. Apply the mixture to your hair for half an hour and wash. This is one of the easiest methods to combat frizz in rains. Food for hair
"At least 24 glasses of water and nimbu pani is a must for lustrous hair and skin. Cucumber tomatoes and fruits is the secret to healthy skin and hair," says Betty. Mane style
Though hairstyles are getting hotter and shorter, easy maintenance is the keyword this season. "Bangs and fringes are there but short bob cut too is a good idea. Natural and wavy short hair looks beautiful this season," says Anju. She adds, "Hair pinned with fancy gem studded glittery clips on a short bob can look extremely classy for a night out. Broad hair bands of nude and funky colours should be worn with trendy casual outfits. These bands are a true blessing as it makes both curly and straight hair look so chic and stylish." "The hair cut that is ideal for monsoon is one that is layered, light and can be tied up with ease. The other haircut that is good for summer is the layered, non fringed haircut. Monsoon can do well with a short crop of hair as well," says a hair-stylist from Chandigarh. Well, with so many beauty tips this monsoon we are sure you are ready to look gorgeous the next downpour. |

It is not always easy being an actor because you have to continue acting in real life sometimes too because you are perceived in a certain way. Life is like any other normal person for us too complete with some highs some lows some love, some heartbreak, some success and yes some letdowns. As an actor you have to express what your role demands and that could be in great contrast and sometimes even disorienting.
To do a sad scene when you are in a happy mood could be tough but what is tougher is to laugh and smile when you are torn apart inside. I remember, on one of my sets, an actor came late. He wasn't a star so he was summoned by the director to explain. He said he had lost his friend the previous night…I saw the expressions on the director's face change, "So sorry to hear that. Are you ok?" Before the guy could open his mouth, the director unintentionally called the assistant and said, "Arey sir ko scene do." I saw the guy stand there with a sheet of dialogues to memorise and deliver. It is a fact is that the show must go on. Deadlines, expenses, production tensions, all that doesn't allow anyone to even hold on for a bit…it is all about moving on. Recently, while waiting for the shot after my makeup in the vanity van all alone, I looked into the mirror at those sad eyes and tears filled in my eyes. It was just then that the assistant knocked and said, "Ma'am, shot ready." I had to control my tears before the assistant could notice. On the set, the choreographer explained some dance steps to me, "Divya just do it really peppy with full energy," but the smile refused to come. The choreographer shouted "Divya you got a fantastic smile! Flash it!!" Finally I smiled but it didn't reach my eyes. It is tough to hide emotions and to express the opposite! While going back, I got a picture clicked with a child and he called out, "Madam! Ek aur photo! You didn't smile!" (Dutta is a well-known Bollywood actor) |

Eyes are the mirror of the soul. This Yiddish proverb is wholly true. Eyes are the most prominent and most noticed feature on the human face. So it is obvious that all efforts are undertaken to enhance the eyes and make them look beautiful. Eyes are delicate and as the summer is here eyes need great care. We talked to some make-up experts from various salons in Chandigarh for some tips on make up for the eyes. Sunita Singh, make-up artist at the Matrix, says light shades are the natural choice in summer and matte eye shadow should be applied and shimmer must be avoided as far as possible in the day. For night parties, smoky eyes is the best look. The latest trend is to go for colour mascara, but still, black mascara is an all time favourite. Though the colours of the eyeliners can be experimented with, they should always complement the colour of your dress. Even for kajal, the most popular colour is black, but brown kajal also looks attractive to match with brown eyes. Ocean, who is the make-up expert at La Opulence, tells about various kinds of eye make-up available. There is Day make-up, evening make-up, party look and bridal make-up. Day make-up should be done with light colours whereas evening make-up can be dark and smoky. For a party look use shimmer and sparkle on the eyes and it looks best in the kind of lighting used in parties. She says all kinds of products used on the eyes must be water-proof; otherwise, sweating can spoil the look. The salon uses Caroline beauty products. To enhance small eyes, she suggests applying long and broad kajal and eyeliner. The effect created will be of eyes that stand out and look bigger. Her views are echoed by Dr Poonam Bhatia from the seven seas spa lounge. In summers, baby colours get along very well with dresses, she said. For instance, she says, light pink can go with sky blue, purple as well as with grey. A glossy touch of golden over it will impart a glamorous look. Black, grey and other such smoky shades are in vogue as concerns mascara. For evening parties, fluorescent green, when combined with smoky eye make-up, creates a different effect. As for going for coloured lenses, the eye colour should always complement the hair colour. The look presented should not give artificial effect. For that healthy twinkle in your eyes exercise them by filling your mouth with water every morning and splashing water in the eyes. The dark circles and the eyesight problem will be solved, and eyes will look more beautiful. Another tip is to eat a tomato every morning on an empty stomach; this will ensure that the HB remains normal and the positive effect can be seen on the eyes. Consuming one spoonful of almonds and honey everyday helps in making skin glow and one would feel energetic as well. |

Television actress Sangeeta Ghosh has adopted a 'no-talking' stand about her marriage to a businessman from the North. While friends and family know that the television actress tied the knot five months back, her lips remain sealed on the matter. It was an arranged marriage. Her wedding was a private affair and a few people from the industry were present. Her mentor, Aroona Irani, was one of them. kNOTTY AFFAIR: Sangeeta Ghosh No cameo please
Aamir Ali who is getting rave reviews for his role as Bajrang Pandey in FIR on Sab TV has been very selective in his choice of work. He is now in no mood to do cameo roles on TV as he feels it is not right to do such cameos. So, he has refused many cameo roles but loves to do dance performances. All in the game
Tisca Chopra, who was last seen in Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par, is known for her social work. She has also done short films like Ek Shaam Ki Mulaquat and Hum Saath Saath Hai Kya? We caught up with the actress in a chat about her role in Cinema Khel Khel Mein What made you say yes to Cinema Khel Khel Mein? Zee Cinema wanted me to host a film festival for children, since TZP was part of it. I was pretty excited at the idea and said yes immediately How is the experience working on television? It's a wonderful experience. On television, you can polish your skills. It's a larger platform with a bigger audience. I'd love to work on television, but doing a daily soap would be too much for me. What would you prefer: hosting, being a contestant or judging a reality show? I would love to host or judge a show like Indian Idol, as I love music though I cannot sing (laughs). I would not be part of a reality show as I am a private person. However, I salute those who have the guts to be part of one. What is the difference between television and films? In films, you don't have a deadline as such. You have your own time and space where you can prepare for the role. However, in television you have several deadlines and you're always under pressure. If you play a character on television, you play the same person until the audience gets bored of you. That way, I would prefer film over television. How much television do you watch? I do when I get the time. I have friends on television. One of them is participating in Comedy Circus. Name a show you loved watching as a kid. Shrishthi Darshan is one show that I remember. When I was kid, TV was a small platform because the shows were weekly One Bollywood star you love to watch on TV? Without any doubt it's Salman Khan. He does a great job he is frank and funny. And my favorite show is Kaun Banega Crorepati by Amitabh Bachchan. According to you Indian television is… Blooming day by day. With so many channels and shows so many people are getting work. It's a great platform and they also give platform to new comers and new talents. — HRM And the award goes to…

Mallika Sherawat dons a half bikini for her role as Sanjay Dutt's wife Kamini in Indra Kumar's comedy Double Dhamaal. Produced by Ashok Thakeria and Indra Kumar and directed by Indra Kumar, this laugh riot is shaping up to be one of the most awaited releases this year, with a brand new glamorous touch to it in the form of Mallika Sherawat and Kangana Ranaut!
Boasting of a huge star cast such as Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Ashish Chowdhry and Jaaved Jaaferi, along with Mallika and Kangana, the film starts from where Dhamaal ends. Four boys Adi (Arshad), Manav (Jaaved), Roy (Riteish) and Boman (Ashish), unknowingly donate all their money at the end of previous film. Now, as they sit and curse their luck, they come across Kabir (Sanjay Dutt), who was previously their partner in crime and is now living a luxurious life. What follows is a comical tale of plots and plans as the four boys try their luck at easy money, once again! This time around they are accompanied by two alluring women Kamini (Mallika) and Kiya (Kangana). PC goes green Today, man has become so selfish and materialistic that, through industrialisation and constant construction, he is destroying the flora and fauna of the planet. Priyanka Chopra has recently joined the Greenathon to save Planet Earth. "Earth is our mother, so it's necessary for us to take a step forward to save our Mother Earth. It's not difficult; we just need to change some bad habits. That's it, and we can save Earth," says PC. She talks to us about some measures for going green and saving earth. Let’s recycle
It's very important for us to recycle everything, and use things which we can recycle, like paper. Stop using tissues every time; you can use hand towels or napkins, as they can be washed and used again. That way, we can save paper and trees, as paper comes from trees. With the rate that trees are getting cut in the city, it's time we take some steps. Recycling of garbage and saving electricity top my priority list. Control numbers
Somehow, we need to control our population. The government is working on it, but we must make an extra effort to control India’s population too. Various problems like poverty and illiteracy can be controlled if we control population. Also, education is important for everyone to know how to save the environment. Lifestyle is the key
Most of my work is done electronically, over email. The pollution in Mumbai really worries me. Whether it's the mounds of garbage on the streets and in the sea or the vehicles that pollute, we need to make a conscious effort to make things better. I do whatever I can as an individual, but it's very important that every person makes an effort from their side, such as not throwing wrappers from car windows, avoiding the use of plastic, and ensuring that one recycles as much as possible. Time to pedal
Go natural, and don’t use vehicles for small distances. We have to be careful with daily usage of fuel. In Europe, they promote the use of cycles; and also have very strict laws against pollution, etc.

Among these top-notch actors was a little bundle of talent, Sunidhi Chauhan. Being a part of Kalyanji Aanandji's music academy, the 11-year-old toured for the first time with the then A-listers. Actor Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper in television drama series Mad Men says that the show might end after seven seasons. "I think it should end after the seventh season. Everything should end. I was a big fan of The Office over here because it ended," a website quoted Hamm as saying. The popular advertising TV drama, which is centred on a 1960s agency and also stars January Jones and Christina Hendricks, has recently been renewed for three more seasons bringing it up to a total of seven. The 40-year-old will star shooting season five of Mad Men in "late July or August" but he has no idea what to expect for his character Don Draper. —IANS Forgiven and forgotten Sonam Kapoor and sis Rhea Kapoor made up with Shilpa Shetty Kundra on their father's behalf.
