The EX
factor
Before you can say, it’s over, they’re back again and before you can say it’s on, they’ve broken up again! For instance, it’s hard to keep track of on and off history of Hollywood’s infamous couple Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee or Jude Law and Sienna Miller. The on-off factor perhaps made for an interesting courtship between Prince William and Kate Middleton. The once divorced and twice married to each other, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton can qualify for a case study on the subject. Relationships that move one step ahead, only to move two steps back and finally be back to the square one! It’s complicated-pretty much like getting back with your ex. Does it workout is a different question altogether.
“Ninety per cent of my friends, have broken up only to get back together again, rather most of the youngsters these days who are in relationships have similar experience. It’s especially true in case you’ve been in a relationship with an old friend,” says Madumita Barik, student at the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Chandigarh, from the personal experiences of those around her. Pretty much the subject of Sumrit Shahi’s next book, A Lot Like Love, A Little Like Chocolate. “It basically borders on people who’ve been together in high school and then head to different colleges, inevitably getting into an open relationship, break up mid way and try and get back together.” At times, it’s a case of coming full circle. The fact that you survived the off part of the relationship, shows there is something to it. Or at least the connection is emotional rather than rational. He adds, “One of the reasons why many people, end up getting back together is the shared memories. You can’t let go of something which has become a routine. At other times, when you do not find people as per standards you’ve already set, there is a tendency to look back.” Several relationship forums will tell you if on off relationships will end up being a success. Meanwhile advises galore, “Talk it out, don’t waste your time, pause for a while, get into a rebound…but does getting back with ex really work out? If Hollywood statistics are to be believed…no. Laughs Anurag Chhabbra, a student of business administration, “In most of the cases it’s the sheer temptation to get back. But does it work out or not depends on numerous factors.” Quoting from personal experience he adds, “We had a lot of common friends who convinced us to give one more try. But I think the girl, got in touch again because she wanted to avoid the pain that accompanies a heart break.” That fact that two people split in the first place, points to a conflict in the relationship, the fact that there was a lack of stability.” Nods Sumrit, “Generally, it doesn’t work out. Once a crack develops it gets difficult to mend things between them.” Some are calling it quits, while others are hanging in there. No wonder, the relationship updates vary from committed to complicated to open to on and off relationships. manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Pre- production for over nine months and after a lot of hard work the team has been able to create this set. Created over nine acres of land on the outskirts of Vapi, Gujarat the set has recreated a palace, a Mahakali temple, the beautiful Somnath temple which is situated at Veraval and the traditional sun-dial. In fact the set looks so authentic that many passers- by mistake it for the real one. The story of Shobha will start from Bharuch when Shobha is six years old. Shah Rukh nurtures young talent
She is 28, has written a book, is a London School of Economics (LSE) alumnus and has penned the screenplay and dialogues of Shah Rukh Khan's RA.One, touted to be Bollywood's costliest film. Kanika Dhillon, the creative content head of Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, says the star is among the few producers in Bollywood who nurture young talent. "When I came to work in Mumbai, I knew I wanted to work with Shah Rukh Khan. Look at what he's done, where he's come from...and what he is today. His success story is a fable!," Dhillon, originally from Amritsar, said.
"He is among the few people who nurture young talent in the industry, without looking at the background, the experience, age and other such things. He is one of those few who is so clued in with what the younger generation likes and dislikes...and that's what makes him what he is!" she added. Dhillon is ready to launch her first novel "Bombay Duck Is A Fish". The book traces the journey of small-town girl Neki Brar, who like countless other star struck people, leaves her cushy corporate job and comes to Mumbai to make it big as a Bollywood filmmaker. And like many, Neki too is enamoured of King Khan. Neki's story is quite similar to Dhillon's. A well-read girl, who graduated from Delhi University's St.Stephen's College, she went on to study at LSE with a major in media and communication for the sake of her parents, for whom her filmmaking ambitions were an "embarassment". But Dhillon, who started her Bollywood stint as an assistant director of Farah Khan's "Om Shanti Om", clarifies that her book is only 30 percent of her own life. "My book doesn't capture how Bollywood works. It captures the human emotions behind wanting to meet your destiny. It is a human story about all those emotions that one comes across in the path of achieving their dreams. Shah Rukh was very encouraging at every point. I’m glad he agreed to launch" she said. —Agencies |

Filmmaker Prakash Jha doesn't believe in only saying "action" behind the camera but he is the one who can go to any length to get a perfect shot. This is why even Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan often calls him Khatron Ka Khiladi. The 68-year-old star is working with Prakash for the first time in Aarakshan and he saw the filmmaker shooting on the edge of a bridge without support and on a crane 50 feet above the ground just to get the perfect shot. But this daredevil attitude did get Prakash into trouble twice during shooting. Firstly, while taking a shot under the bulldozer, the driver didn't hear the "stop" and almost ran over him and second time he had an accident on a scooter. This didn't dampen the spirits of the filmmaker who jokingly told his crew: "You've made me fall, but don't think I have fallen from grace." Aarakshan is based on the controversial policies of caste-based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. Apart from Amitabh, it features Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik Babbar. The film will hit theatres Aug 12. — IANS |

GET PHYSICAL
In summers our body is exposed to the sun leading to the loss of water from through draining (sweat). It results in lack of resistance and energy. Sheetali and Sitkari Pranayama have a calming and cooling effect on our body as well as mind. These are especially useful in summer when we experience restlessness due to the heat. Practicing these Pranayamas helps cool the body's core temperature and makes one feel serene and calm. These have great energizing, soothing, relaxing and cooling effects on all the nerve channels and on the whole body. These pranayama also helps in stemming acidity of the stomach and blood pressure. Sheetali pranayama
First be seated comfortably in any of the meditative postures like Padmasana, Siddhasana or Sukhasana. Keep the waist, back, neck and the spinal column erect. Rest your hands on the knees. Keep the eyes gently closed and relax the whole body. Now gently bring the tongue outside the mouth as far as possible without feeling any tension or strain. Roll up both sides of the tongue, so that the tongue forms a tubular structure, like a straw. Now inhale from the mouth through the 'tubular' tongue. As the air flows over the moist tongue, it greatly reduces the temperature of the inhaled breath. The inhalation should be deep without strain on the lungs or diaphragm. After inhalation, draw the tongue back, close your mouth and exhale through the nose. Sitkari pranayama
Sit in a comfortable posture as should be done in Sheetali pranayama. Bring your jaws together. Now place the front portion of the tongue against the front teeth and the rest of the tongue on the palate. Keep the lips open. Now inhale through the mouth. Inhale through the right and left side of the lips while making the sound "Si-Si". After inhaling, close your mouth. Retain breath. After retaining your breath comfortably as long as possible, exhale through both the nostrils. Begin by practicing 10 rounds and over time increase both the duration of each round as well as the total number of rounds. For general benefits, practice up to 15 rounds. For relief from symptoms due to hot weather, do up to 50 rounds. If you have low blood pressure then these pranayama can bring it down further. So you must be careful. If you suffer from respiratory condition such as asthma, wheezing or bronchitis, avoid these breathing exercises. Those with heart disease may do so but without breath retention. Chronic constipation patients should also refrain from this practice. (Juneja is a Chandigarh-based

Picture perfect
'The evolving sun' is an exhibition of photographs by Manveen Anand and Nitish Gupta. The duo have brought their work under the banner of an NGO Global Environment Concern (GEC), the exhibit is aimed to raise funds for the sake of Nature. The transformation from a hobby in photography to a profession was easy and enjoyable. "In the merchant navy, I always came across interesting landscapes and interwove my clicks with messages," says Manveen. Starting two years back, he created a small collection and started his blog, moved eventually to flicker and joined the Chandigarh Photography Club. After gaining insights from professionals in the field, this globe trotter started his page on Facebook. "That was a great learning platform," he says. "Whatever funds I earn out of my exhibits are going directly to the GEC. Over a period of time, I hope to reach out to a larger audience and doing conceptual exhibits," he smiles. With someone who can easily pass off as a college kid, Manveen introduces his work. "I like to promote positivity through my work," he says. Pointing to one of his photographs, showing a fort in Manauli, he says, "Like here, I tried to show the existence of culture and tradition." The contact of black, orange and green in the photograph and a broken ladder made it picture perfect. With a background in the Indian Navy, Manveen carries his lenses through cyclones. "This was during the cyclone Laila recently," he says, showing us a wooden boat against the background of bright blue seas. "All big boats were running to the shore for protection, but several smaller boats teamed into the sea hoping for the high tide to bring exotic sea delights," he smiles. This traveler doesn't mind sharing his favourite photo locales around the world. "Spain is a delight. No one really knows but the patterns you see in the sky are outstanding," he says. Nitish Gupta could not make it due to his health, he tells. The two met through the GEC and have been in touch ever since. "He is more of a nature lover. Whatever looks good to the eye, he has captured that," he informs. Apart from the photos, we found several newspaper clippings on the wall." This is just to show the kind of work our NGO has been doing, shares Rahul Gupta, the founder of GEC. vasudha@tribunemail.com |
Laughter is a challenge: Kapil
A comedian has the serious responsibility of brightening your day with laughter. Says comedy king Kapil Sharma who shares his journey to success. After completing his graduation from Hindu College of Arts in Amritsar, Kapil decided to do the next best thing to help him take his career ahead, a diploma in computer application. “It was after I bagged the national prize at the prestigious All-India Youth festival that APJ Collage of Fine Arts roped me in for PG Diploma in commercial arts and computer application,” he informs us. Where did comedy come into the picture? “It’s actually been a roller coaster ride for me. I was also into theatre and singing and always aspired to be a singer,” he shares. For this young standup comedian, comedy happened by chance. Six years back, he stepped into the field of comedy and has been in love with it ever since. “Laughter Challenge happened by chance and since they were on a look out of fresh talent, it gave me a good platform to explore my comic sensibilities,” he quips. Whoever said comedy is a serious business must have been someone with a wide exposure in the industry. “I never thought it would be easy. At one stage, I was face to face with Amanullah Khan. Considering how big a name he is in the comedian industry, I would have been proud of even loosing to him,” he shares. Fortunately, hands down it was a win win situation for Kapil. “It was one of the most pleasant experiences winning the show,” he smiles. Still basking in the success of the show, Kapil started his career in comedy. From doing shows in the US, he moved into an unfamiliar zone and made his mark. One such trip made Kapil realise the value of his talent. “It was in the US, I got a call from the Reliance Group. They wanted me to perform for the Mumbai Indians. From all that I gather, Harbhajan Singh had recommended me,” he starts sharing his story with a child-like excitement. “I was so excited to perform in front of prominent players. While I was waiting to perform, Sachin Tendulkar got up and came up to me. With butterflies in my stomach, I faced him and he told me how much he loved my work,” he explained. The excitement grew as the continued the story. “He told me that he wanted the CDs of all my seasons. It is when such prolific persons recognise your talent and appreciate it that you realise your worth,” he shares. Now a part of the fourth season of Comedy Circus that Kapil shares his fears, “It’s a bit scary that people tend to expect so much from you.” After bagging the three seasons of Comedy Circus, Kapil was overwhelmed when Anees Bazmee offered him a role in “It’s My Life”. Another life changing experience has now opened doors for him in the film industry as well. “I recall being told that Anees was editing Welcome when the finale of Laughter Challege ran side by side. That’s where he saw my work and offered me the role without auditions. It made my life,” he says gladly. With his brother in police and a well-settled life for sister, he is happy being a part of a small family. “My mother, brother, bhabhi and my neice are still in Punjab,” he says. Having his career set on the right path, what’s next on Kapil’s platter? “My mom has been insisting I marry now,” he cracks up laughing. “But yes, I am open to serious roles and hope to one day cut my own album,” he says. vasudha@tribunemail.com |

Reetinder Singh Sodhi, a young cricketer from Patiala in Punjab, moved out of the dressing room and found himself a blushing bride and that's what we call personal success. The latest entrant into the blissfully wedded life is Reetinder Singh Sodhi. Reetinder met his partner, Prabhdeep just six days before they got married on May 28. "I had noticed that most of the fights begin during courtship, so I kept mine short and sweet," he says laughing. Reetinder let his parents choose his MBA bride. "My father was always into cricket. He played at all levels barring the international cricket. I just followed his footsteps," he says gladly. After that point there was no looking back for this Patiala man. With a stint in International cricket from 2000-2002, he was forced to take a break due to a back injury. "It took some time before I recovered and started playing in the IPL," he says. Surprisingly, Reetinder also holds the position of a Deputy Manager with Air India. He shares the story of how professional success brought job satisfaction as well. "It was due to cricket that Air India hired me. Whenever we don't play for any other team, we represent Air India," he says. Currently posted in Chandigarh, Reetinder is also looking at moving on to the role of a cricket commentator. "During the recent matches, I worked with different channels as a commentator and hope to make things happen on that front," he says. Though he will continue to play cricket, he doesn't mind keeping his options open. "I remember when I was selected for the international squad and met Sachin for the first time. We shook hands and he congratulated me. I did not wash my hands for the next six hours," he shares with a child-like giggle. Of course, 2 domestic double centuries against Delhi and Maharashtra occupy a close second place. "Earlier, things were different. We have had to struggle a lot before making it big. Now, with the IPL, cricketing talent has better display. You make it once to the IPL, perform well and manage to secure a place in international cricket," he says. With a blissful wedded life ahead, we wish the cricket player all the best in all his matches, domestic, international and personal. Howzzat!! vasudha@tribunemail.com |

Single mothers are most likely to suffer from poorer health later in life, a new American study has claimed.
The 30-year study which surveyed thousands of mothers in the US found that those who had children out of the wedlock reported lower levels of health at age 40 than those who were married when they had their first child. And marriage, when it occurred after motherhood, did not appear to remedy the women's health problems, according to the study, led by Kristi Williams of sociology at Ohio State University. The findings suggested that public health campaigns to promote marriage, which were started in the US in 1996 and aimed at single and low-income mothers, may not improve these women's health as once hoped, the researchers said. Because many more women have out-of-wedlock children today than several decades ago, the researchers predicted an increasing public health problem as these women enter their midlife, LiveScience reported. |
A study into today's tweens and teens has revealed that they will not talk to their parents about their innermost fears and turmoil. Social researcher Neer Korn said tweens, aged from about 9 to 12, and teens avoid telling their parents the truth about what's happening at school or online because they often fear their reaction. Korn, whose company The Korn Group released the study 'The Truth About Teens And Tweens', said parents need to reassess how they talk to their children if they want them to be more open. Michelle Mitchell, author of 'What Teenage Girls Don't Tell Their Parents', agrees. "They think their parents will panic and embarrass them by becoming too involved. Instead of deciding what they think should be done, parents need to ask their children 'what do you want me to do?'" she said. But if your daughter rolls her eyes whenever you ask her a question or your son simply grunts, here is what might really be going on in your tween or teen's life. Mitchell and Korn agree that bullying is a bigger part of everyday life for tweens and teens than parents realise. "It happens in the playground and it happens online, it happens every day. It might be low-level like ignoring certain friends or making nasty comments but it can still be hurtful and damaging," Mitchell said. Korn says tweens have changeable crushes while teens have relationships, which may or may not become sexual. Teenagers don't want to talk to their parents about the details of what goes on in their relationships. A recent report found 44.2 percent of 13-year-olds and 84.7 percent of 17-year-olds had consumed alcohol in the past year. And 8.4 percent of 13-year-olds and 31.4 percent of 17-year-olds had smoked. The Korn Group said drinking alcohol is almost expected at many teenage parties and marijuana is "easy" to get. Mitchell says parents need to arm themselves with knowledge about what their teenagers are doing online, to protect them from bullying and also predators. They might say they hate you but that doesn't change the fact tweens and teens enjoy time with their families. Keeping up with who are your teenage daughter's "best friends" can be almost a full-time job. "Having friends means being accepted, so teenagers will put up with a lot before leaving a group of friends. That can be difficult for parents," Mitchell said. — ANI |

@PritishNandy Before 25, I was married, had a son, got divorced, wrote 8 books, won 23 awards. But if it was today, I wouldn't get a drink. Mr Nandy reacts sharply to the decision of the Maharashtra Cabinet of increasing the drinking age to 25. Our suggestion sir, take it easy. These things only happen in India and no where else!! Neil
