CELEB(rating) environment
Strict laws, afforestation, maintaining the ecological balance is what stars think will help improve our environment
Jasmine Singh

Now it's Baba Ramdev's turn to instill courage and motivate people to fight against corruption and black money. Thankfully, our country has always been faced with such pressing issues from time to time. Amidst the more and lesser important topics, environment is one sphere that concerns all and sundry, before it falls prey to 'as long as it doesn't affect me phenomenon.' On the World Environment Day 2011, we ask Bollywood celebrities what comes to their mind when we say the word environment? And would they do something for its sake?

Hard and fast rule

Strict rules and regulations is what I think of when I say environment. The way we are out to misuse the elements of nature, the only thing that can save us besides awareness is a rule, where every defaulter is taken to task. This is the only way we can prevent it from any further damage. — Sudeepa Singh

Hit & run

Tsunami, landslide, volcano, forest fire these are the only words that come to my mind when I think of our environment today. The way we are disturbing the ecological balance, I don't think we would be left with any good thing to think about. Trees, rivers, birds would become objects to be viewed at a safe distance in the museum. Well, if Anna Hazare can, why can't an individual make a difference! I have tried to minimize the use of plastic at my home, secondly, I try using renewable resources of energy, solar energy to cook food. — Aman Dhaliwal

Cutting edge

Environment, this should be an area of concern right now. When I think of the environment, images of concrete jungles haunt me. Ecological balance is the need of the hour. If this goes for a toss, we are doomed. I am against deforestation. I have some mangrove trees in front of my house, which I wouldn't let them be chopped ever. — Mahie Gill

Lights off

The Book of Eli, the Bollywood movie depicts the state where we will find ourselves after some years with no electricity or water, and no life eventually. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. — Yami Gautam

Give me some green

A concrete jungle with no speck of greenery is what our environment is moving towards. Skyscrapers, crammed lanes, a short living span, what else will a disturbed climate offer. Even if you are one of the residents at brick buildings, put hanging plants to instill life in concrete. — Ayushmann Khurrana

Live organic
Organic products, which celebrate Nature rather than destroy its beauty are fast becoming a part of our everyday life
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Green is more than just a buzzword these days. And with every youngster promoting 'the green' there's no doubt that organic and environment-friendly products are doing well for themselves as well as the consumer. And if you are also one of those who thinks of the planet, then organic is bound to be on your mind. Though most people associate organic with paper work it is more than that. Omnipresent, organic makes it presence felt right from our wardrobe to our kitchen shelves. We take a sneak peek.

Paper jewels

Well, if saving trees is your priority then we have a world of recycled stuff, of course in a reinvented form.

And it's more than diaries and notepads of recycled paper. Vrinda Gokhale is one name that has converted paper into jewels. Into this endeavour for the past over a decade, Vrinda's Paperjewelz have a designer appeal and look as good as real ones.

Though paper jewellery may raise a lot of questions on affordability, durability, as well as whether it is fashionable or not; they are natural, affordable and definitely fashionable. The price range is between Rs 50 and 1,500 and there is a wide selection of designs to choose from.

Talking of paper, it was almost a year back that we saw the humble paper in a new avatar that you may never have imagined: paper made from elephant poop!

From photo frames to catapults for kids to notebooks these products are marketed under the name of Haathi Chaap and are made from elephant poop paper.

Just natural

If you are the one who wants to go beyond paper to be called organic friendly then there is organic clothing for you. UV&W is the product that sells organic clothing. Yes, clothes that are natural or we may 'untreated' with chemicals. Though product tagline speaks it all: 'The skin is a living organ that absorbs much of what it comes in contact with,' the store of UV&W at Paras Downtown Square, Zirakpur has a wide range of apparels. Right from vests to t-shirts, lowers and tops you can fill your wardrobe with organic clothing. "The garments are made with fine organic cotton yarn and this cotton is grown in a natural way without the use of synthetic pesticides and chemicals. Even during dyeing and processing only safe and skin friendly products are used," says an employee at the store.

Eat it right

With pesticides in almost everything we eat thanks to organic stuff we have something to bank on. Though there are a number of people who buy organic stuff especially in pulses there are even jams and vegetables that are organic these days. Puneet an employee of Fabindia says, "We have pulses and jams available here that are organic. And they are better because no chemicals or preservatives are used to cultivate these products." Though you should be ready to shell a little more to buy these products but all things good come at a price. Empire store-17 and Peshawari-19 have organic products available with them."

Say it honey!

Natures' on your mind so, why not say it with honey. Little Bee, a house of honey and honey-based products is another all natural product. Though the product range includes almost everything made of honey, right from sauces to achars to even chocolates here too you can explore the organic variety. "Our products can be called environment friendly as no chemicals are used in its making. And there are certain products that are purely organic." Little bee organic honey, Little Bee Turkish Delight safforn, nuts in honey, Little Bee Honiscuit, Little Bee Mielscuit, Little Bee chocolate are a few of them. And yes, they even have Beeswax candles. No soot or chemicals are used and it acts as an air purifier.

Foot note

Jute footwear and bags are available everywhere, so making use of these products too makes you environmental friendly. So, this Environment day say no to plastic and join the green brigade.

Indians have graduated from being routine travellers to explorers ready to set foot on virgin locales around the world

Bintan Islands
Breathtaking view: Bintan Islands

If you're headed to Goa or Thailand (yawn!) no one would ask you details of the holidays on your return. The reasons are more than one as to why it pays to head off the beaten track. Like it's said, there are some that like to discover new places. Then there are others who like to discover themselves at a new place. If you want to go where most people wouldn't think of, here's an update on some of the less explored options.

The travel and tourism industry is only too willing to cater to the explorer rather than the traveller. Says Madhav Pai, COO, leisure travel outbound, Thomas Cook, India, "Not just the destinations, even attitudes of Indians have changed as far as travelling is concerned. Traditionally, Indians used to take on an average one holiday in two to three years, but now they are taking multiple holidays, extended or small in a year."

No wonder the change in attitude reflects in the change in destinations. There's graduation from the most visited to the less discovered. He adds, "South America, Jordan, Tunisia, there are also some of the emerging destinations like Scandinavia, Turkey and Macau. Indian traveller is looking for new destinations especially those with an experiential bent of mind." Not to forget, places that are exotic. There are more than 45,000 island properties around the world. A trend the connoisseurs have taken to. "Apart from the usual places in South East Asia, there are several unexplored islands that people have taken to in a big way. For instance Langkawi Islands, Bintan Islands, so many other group of Islands," shares Gangandeep
Kaur, operations manager, Cox and Kings.

Talk of the most common and is South East Asia is a hit with people from Punjab? She adds, "When it comes to the people up north, I think 80 per cent of the travellers from this region visit Singapore, Malaysia and the like." There is an echo. Amarpreet Singh from Club Mahindra says, "People from Punjab are loyal to places like Pattaya, Thailand, Bangkok and the like. They are the most popular."

Island hopping is rather a fact than a fad. He adds, "Poovar Islands, Coorg and from among places outside India we have a tie up with Resort Condominium International that gives access to more than 5,000 properties."

Unusual is usually the most adventurous. Some of the best destinations visited by a minority of tourists are:
Omo Valley, Ethiopia

Those with a fascination for different tribes of Africa, this is one of the places to be at. They might be a little difficult to reach, rather impossible without the help of specialists. But if those who've been there are to be believed, the experience is truly worth it.

Hinterlands of Surinam

If small villages, quaint place, river banks, is your idea of holiday, Surinam awaits. The former colony of Netherlands is certainly off the beaten track.

Bhutan

One of the best kept travel secrets. Yet to be discovered by the madding crowd. The place, high up in the Himalayas is one of the virgin travel destinations. And it needs to be discovered to be believed.

Idyllic retreat
Wildflower Hall situated at 8, 250 feet offers a splendid view of mountain ranges, cedar forests, ancient monasteries and also a spectacular luxury experience
Jasmine Singh

I knew I had left the city of bricks, mortar and well-designed lanes far behind when I visited Wildflower Hall, Shimla, An Oberoi Resort.. Fresh, cool, little warm, tangy, sweet air pressed against the cabs window. It rushed in as we rolled down the glass. Situated at 8,250 feet tucked in the Himalayas, is this place Wildflower Hall amidst cedar and pine trees. Drugged on fresh air, whispering tall trees, soulful silence, I was one of those lost and found situations, till Storm Mason, executive assistant manager, Wildflower Hall, found me sitting in the resort lobby, looking around. I tried hard to not look like a babe lost in the woods, but I guess I was. Storm smiled; genuinely interested in knowing how I was feeling. 'Great' was the only word that I could conjure up. After exchanging more pleasantries, it was me and the rest of it….everything.

Everything like….

View from the window

Wildflower Hall, Oberoi Resort has 85 rooms divided into categories-premier, deluxe and Lord Kitchener Suite. And if you ask for the one facing the Himalayas, you know you are booked for a blissful stay. Teak wood floors, hand knotted rugs and rich furnishings, every room at the resort is packed with things that you would require. Though I am not in favour of television sets hampering the whole idea of a holiday, but TV set spells luxury in its own way. Checking out the mini bar, the rich chocolates tastefully placed in a glass tray, the lavishly laid menu book, a small corner for study, I happen to find myself facing a window. A window which had something nice and mysterious about it! How was I supposed to know the tranquil haven it would open to? Tall cedar trees, and the sound of the wind, time stood still, it didn't move in a long time. Back in the room, it was luxurious, and the view from the window has heaven!

It's fine to dine

It is okay to feel the hunger pangs when you are in the mountains. The place offers a fine dining experience with a selection of continental and coffee shop specialties. The restaurant opens onto a terrace that overlooks into the magnificent Himalayas. Once you are done with food, you can check out the recreational facilities like trekking, mountain biking, river rafting that the place offers. Spa menu is yet another must experience thing at Wildflower Hall. Two Spa Suites offer view of the valley where you can either go in for Tibetain Bowls to cleanse and enhance chakra energy centres of the body, or go in for heated lava shells to synergise warmth.

Veggie delights for tourists

To tap the growing wanderlust among Indians, the Thai hospitality industry has joined hands with Indian firms with packages to suit their pocket and palette that even have options of regional Indian vegetarian cuisine.

"We are forming new partnerships with Indian companies so that this trend of growth in the tourism sector continues," says Bangornrat Chinaprayoon, director of Tourism Authority of Thailand.

"We cannot ignore a country like India. We understand the needs of people from various Indian states and the religious sentiments. So we have encouraged our tourism industry to draw up packages accordingly," Chinaprayoon said.

According to Chinaprayoon, the Thai government has been taking keen interest since 2009 to promote regional tourism from Asia and India is one of the key markets. MakeMyTrip.com has launched packages to Thailand. — IANS

Some quick thinking and common sense can come in handy in a risky situation
Mona

"To fight back, all we need is some common sense," says BS Handa, a martial arts expert and initiator of Fight Back, a workshop aimed at training women from Chandigarh. Four decades into the field, Handa has had training in judo, karate (three styles), taekwondo, kung fu tao and aikido. A black belt 5th Dan, WTF (Korea) and president of Chandigarh Taekwondo Association, Handa has been in the field for last four decades.

Fight Back, a week long workshop is aimed at school teachers and students. With chain snatchings, robbery and eve teasing incidents on the rise, women no more protected inside the home walls, children on their own, the best way to face the situation is some training in self defense.

Martial art is not just a game but a lesson in personality development. "Our programmes are not just for a certificate but instil respect, patience, discipline, confidence, cooperation, self defense, self control, responsibility, physical fitness, positive attitude, concentration and focus," says Handa who picked up martial arts in his school days.

Allaying the false notion of martial arts being for the young or fit, Handa says, "Self defense has become need of young and old, men or women alike. It offers a good fitness regimen for all age groups."

Happy at the successful conclusion of one such workshop at The British School-44, Handa aims the techniques to percolate down from teachers to student to parents. "Teachers are the pillars of a school, so we have initiated this workshop for teachers so that they can motivate and guide students through," says Mona Shri Sethi, principal, The British School.

Self defense tips

n Whatever lies around can be used as a weapon. Be it sand, gravel, pen, bag, diary, hairpin or even long nails. Sand in the eyes can weaken the strongest of attacker; one just needs to know the right technique.

n Bag snatchings usually happen from the right side because that's the fast lane. Wear your bag on the left shoulder and let the other hand be free for movement.

n Even a toddler's bite is enough to injure but as we grow up we forget this potent weapon in our armoury. Use it if attacker gets hold you.

Body as a weapon

n Palm is the strong part of the hand. Use it knock the opponent in close proximity

n An elbow strike is useful when in close proximity with the opponent

n We all practice knee stroke while climbing stairs. Use it in between the legs of the opponent when attacked from the front

Mind games

n Usually women get scared when followed in dark not realising that the follower has much more to fear than them. Turn around and shout, this will scare the follower further giving you more time to collect yourself.

n Unlike abroad we open doors to answer the door bell. Teach your children to look towards some door and call out for an acquaintance, making the intruder feel as if someone is home.

n If you are a woman alone in the house and spot an intruder shout 'fire, fire', not only will alert the neighbours (even non-cooperative ones will pay heed to it) and it's enough to perplex the intruder.

Paint the town orange
Prabhdip Brar

Every new season has the same rhythm. Fashion and design professionals descend on the fashion and decoration trade fairs where there are trends to decipher, emerging brands to discover and new inspirations.

So if you are looking for the colour of the season you need to have a binding factor from last seasons colour as fashions don't change drastically but gradually. Sure, you can wear whatever colour you want to. But if you want to look your best, you'll want to wear colours that harmonise with your natural colouring. It's really that simple. Colour analysis is not a fad! In fact, it's scientific, based on the 1898 colour theory by artist and Professor Albert Munsell. Its effects are profound.

Wearable geometry of urban colour is the main signature of looking good. The latest colour to have picked up in the Indian fashion market is the colour orange and its hues. With the Indian skin tone the bent of the hue is towards terracotta as it enhances the red of the Indian skin! All latest collections presented in the Wills India Fashion Week 2011 the designer's hallmark fascinations were bent towards presenting the new definition of chic looks with sculptural femininity highlighting this fabulous colour. The palette is saturated with bloody red, orange, saffron and yellow. What is important is the silhouette, which is predominantly inspired by fashion mathematics of shapes, curves and surfaces ranging from linear pieces defining the silhouette, osseous structures, ovoid and elliptical profiles, and wavy pleated figures to butterfly volumes and outfits resembling the delicate structure of art.

For deep coloured skin tone, the second determining factor is whether you can enhance your colour and make your skin bronze giving it the evening look.

The brief of the perfect guy is that he needs to be a Gabru jawan. Hit and miss

Akshay Kumar was supposed to make a guest appearance in Laagi Tujhse Lagan on Colors to talk about Khatron Ke Khiladi and introduce the new Datta. But now sources inform that the Khiladi will not be making an appearance on the show. Akshay was to introduce Shabbir Ahluwalia aka Datta bhau on the show but since a certain section of media leaked out this information in advance, the idea has been scrapped.

Since Akshay’s entry would have made a strong impact, it was being planned meticulously. Unfortunately, since the news leaked out, the idea was dropped. Hence, now it does not make sense getting him on the show.

Low TRPs for Ratan ka Rishta

Mega buzz in telly town is that Swyamvar 3- Ratan ka Rishta has not got expected TRPs. During the first season, the channel was happy to see Rakhi Sawant raking in 3.5 Amap ratings and though it dipped with season 2, but Rahul Mahajan still got a decent 2.4 Amap ratings. Apparently Ratan who is not as popular as Rakhi or Rahul, has been able to get only 1.2 ratings.

The speculation in the industry is that as Ratan isn’t that well known, the audiences haven’t been able to tune into the show. But this is the result of the first week, the ratings might pick up with time.

Urmila turning towards East

Just being human
Salman Khan is known for his magnanimous ways. Everybody loves him. Being Human, his charity, has become very popular. He shares some advice on being generous and charitable.

Charity begins at home: Salman Khann Help everyone you can in whichever way you can. Be nice to everybody. Be grateful for what you have, and be giving.

n I do certain shows and produce some movies, and their proceeds go straight to Being Human. Of course, feel free to make donations to Being Human.

n Buy genuine Being Human t-shirts. They are reasonably priced, and available at Indian chain stores. Proceeds from their sales go to my foundation. Also, buy Being Human watches, if you feel inclined to. We have quite a stylish range.

n Give away what you do not use. Clothes, shoes, and utilities are very useful to orphanages. Keep a certain amount aside from your monthly budget for donations.

n Avoid using child labour, and protest against it. Be nice to your domestic help, and treat them well. —— HRM

Javed’s serious side

Javed JaffreyJaved Jaffrey is a supremely talented and popular actor. He is known for dancing as much as he is known for acting. The reticent actor will be soon seen in Double Dhamaal, along with Ashish Chaudhury, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut and Mallika Sherawat. We caught the actor in a conversation about life, films, dancing, Double Dhamaal, and more…

Double Dhamaal

Believe me, you will have double the number of laughs while watching Double Dhamaal, as it’s more hilarious than Dhamaal. It’s about the same four friends, who fall into different types of trouble. They are quite dumb, so you will laugh when you see how they deal with everything.

Co-stars

It is always a pleasure and great fun to work with Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Ashish Chaudhury, and Sanjay Dutt. Everyone is a prankster, and believes in working hard as well as enjoying work. While working for Dhamaal, we enjoyed a little as we concentrated more on work, but this time around, we already knew each other, so the dhamaal was more. Working with Sanju Baba is great because he makes you comfortable, and his home-made food is so delicious.

Turning producer

I co-financed a documentary film on football in Kashmir called Inshallah, Football, but the Censor Board has banned it. Now, I am also planning to produce some commercial cinema, but I will never make a film on dance or comedy because it’s so common today to make a film in these genres. I would like to explore the other side of the world or cinema which people have not experienced before. I intend to produce soon, but right now, I can’t talk about it in detail since it’s in the initial stages. All I can say is that my first film will be a serious film, and I won’t direct it.

Dance

Dance is something very close to me, as it’s my hobby and my passion. I feel that a good movie on dance, solely about dance, has not been made in Bollywood. I know I am good at dancing, and want to do something more with my talent and passion.

Bollywood dance

It’s nice to see that choreography has grown so much in India. People have started taking dance as a career option these days.---HRM

"This place is beyond my imagination. I am overwhelmed by its serenity. For long, I had been planning to visit the temple. I am happy today and bow at mother's (goddess Amba's) feet," the actor said.

Akshay said he was deeply impressed by the grandeur of the shrine. — PTI

For brother's sake

Now this is called sisterly love! Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who has been busy shooting for filmmaker Kunal Kohli's next, has taken two days off to attend her younger brother Siddharth's graduation in Switzerland.

The 28-year-old, who flew to Switzerland Wednesday night, didn't want to miss out on her brother's special day at any cost, and had planned the break well in advance, says a source close to the actress.

"This was very important for her. Her parents have also gone," said the source. — IANS

IIFA introduces a music workshop for the first time

A new addition to the IIFA weekend itinerary is the IIFA music workshop. Initiated this year, it aims to showcase Indian music, which is a major and unique facet of Indian cinema. The workshop is an open invitation to students from across Ontario, professionals and industry stalwarts to participate in a theme-based discussion – Music Bringing Cinema Alive. Established to bridge the gap between India and the host country by means of sharing and promoting the music of both countries, the workshop is an ideal platform for Indian and International musicians and other professionals to interact and share ideas with emerging talent, professionals and other interested parties. The workshop will be held on the last day of the weekend, the June 25, 2011, the same morning as the Floriana IIFA Awards. The workshop will be hosted by Saif Ali Khan.

Party time

Aamir Khan is hosting a success party for the success of the song DK Bose. That is a novel concept. The party is happening at a suburban, sea-side lounge and will be attended by the cast, music director, and lyricist of the film. Ram Sampath has scored and sung the song and Amitabh Bhattacharya has penned the lyrics.

Strangers, are we?

Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra are barely on talking terms. They do not even rehearse for Kunal Kohli’s romantic film. They are complete professionals in front of the camera and play their parts well but do not interact once the camera stops rolling.

SRK’sletter

Shah Rukh Khan gave letters to members of the media present at the launch of the trailer of Ra.One. Take a look. Pretty sweet of him to do that.

Megan Fox hated her sexy image!

Hollywood actress Megan Fox quit the Transformers franchise because she felt “awkward” with her “sex-driven role”, says co-star Shia Labeouf.

According to Labeouf, the 25-year-old actress, who starred in two of the robot blockbusters, was uncomfortable with director Michael Bay’s filming style, reported a publication. “Megan developed this Spice Girl strength, this woman-empowerment that made her feel awkward about her involvement with Michael, who some people think is a very lascivious filmmaker, the way he films women.”Mike films women in a way that appeals to a 16-year-old’s sexuality. It’s Michael’s style. And I think (Fox) never got comfortable with it. This is a girl who was taken from complete obscurity and placed in a sex-driven role in front of the whole world and told she was the sexiest woman in America. And she had a hard time accepting it,” said LeBeouf. The Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps star further said that the filmmaker also lacked tactful dealing. “When Mike would ask her to do specific things, there was no time for fluffy talk. We’re on the run. And the one thing Mike lacks is tact. There’s no time for ‘I would like you to just arch your back 70 degrees’, added LeBeouf. Fox was replaced by lingerie model Rosie Huntington Whiteley in the upcoming third instalment, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. —PTI

Thank you, doctor

Hollywood star Matt Damon was devastated to find that his father was suffering from cancer and flew to Boston to personally thank the doctors treating him.

The 40-year-old actor is now glad that his “marathon runner” father is fine and is currently in remission, reported a publication.

“My family is so grateful for the care you’ve given us. It’s deeply humbling to see how many people here are committing their lives to helping others. We’ve lost some close personal friends to cancer in recent years, but I never thought it would happen to my dad, the marathon runner,” Damon said. The Bourne Identity star’s father Kent Damon also spoke about his love for his “celebrity” son. “He’s all you could ever for ask for in a son.” —PTI

Angelina prefers home-schooling

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has said that her children are better off being taught at home than going to school. The 35-year-old actress and her partner Brad Pitt have their kids taught by tutors because they think that the modern education system is bad, reported a publication online.

"The education system is so bad. I do think we live in a different age and the education system hasn't caught up with our children and our way of life," the 'Kung Fu Panda' star said. Another reason the kids won't sit in a classroom is the family's globetrotting lifestyle. The family has a home in New Orleans and another in the French Rivera, but they spend a lot of time traveling.

Jolie has been criticised for dragging her children with her across the globe instead of sending them to school, but the mother-of-six claims their lifestyle is far more educational for her kids than the modern school system.

Jolie prefers to hire tutors and home school her and Brad Pitt's growing brood, which includes Maddox, nine; Pax, seven; Zahara, six; Shiloh, five and two-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

"But we travel and I'm the first person to say, 'Get the school work done as quickly as possible because let's go out and explore. Instead of tomfoolery in the class room, I'd rather them go to a museum and learn to play guitar and read and pick a book they love," said Jolie. Long-time partner Brad Pitt, 47, shares his lover's disdain with the schooling system, describing their clan as a 'nomadic family'. "We're in an international programme, so wherever we go it's the same curriculum," he said in a 2009 interview.

The children have been enrolled in the French schooling system, the Lycee

programme, in cities including New York, Prague and Venice, which is taught

to them by nannies and specialist teachers. — PTI
