Sachin Singh has topped the state in the CBSE Class XII examinations, the results of which were declared today, by securing 98 per cent marks. He is a student of Dayanand Arno Vernacular Centenary Public School, Jagjeetpur.

Talking to TNS, the topper revealed his success mantra sans any coaching. He wants to crack the IIT exam to pursue computer engineering. He said: “I believe in a thorough understanding of a subject as it helps a lot in the future. Taking breaks is also important as I learnt this in the Class Xth exams when I topped the school but failed to figure on top five merit list.”

“He is a brilliant student and always made us proud. He has always been supportive to his classmates and is very friendly with others,” Sachin’s parents Surendra and Sushma.

Overall, CBSE-affiliated schools in Haridwar district fared better in comparison to the last year with all big schools, including Shiv Dale, DAV Centenary, DPS, Uddeshwari, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Bal Vidya Mandir, having 90 per cent results.

Raghav Gupta of Delhi Public School in the BHEL complex secured the second position with 97 per cent marks. He wants to pursue engineering. Students made aware of biodiversity
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 23
The Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS), Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology and the National Science Academy of India jointly organised a science awareness camp at Government Inter College, Satiyo, in Tehri Garhwal district.

At this camp, a drawing competition along with two popular science lectures were organised. The topic for the drawing competition was “biodiversity” and the lectures delivered by Dr DP Uniyal and Dr Sarita Khadka, senior scientists of Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology, were on the topics of “biodiversity” and “Graphene: a form of Carbon”, respectively.

This camp was inaugurated by Dr DP Uniyal and presided over by VN Vyopari, Principal of Government Inter College, Satiyo.

Dr DP Uniyal, in his lecture, said the word biodiversity came from combining words “biological” and “diversity” and it meant all the variety of life on the earth. Not just all the different plant and animal species, like dogs and apples, but the variations within each species, like beagles and golden

delicious apples. In fact, it also refers to the variety that exists between individual beagles, or between individual golden delicious apples. There’s a lot of biodiversity out there, he added.

On the importance of agricultural biodiversity, Dr Uniyal said fewer genetic resources meant fewer opportunities for growth and innovation in agriculture. Growth and innovation are needed if agricultural production has to go up to feed the growing population. “If our food supply can’t evolve, then we may be in a big trouble,” he added. Losing biodiversity doesn’t just limit the opportunities for growth, it puts our food supply in jeopardy. “Agriculture becomes less able to adapt to environmental changes, such as global warming or the appearance of new pests and diseases. If our current food supply can’t adapt to changes in the environment, then we may be in a really big trouble. It’s extremely important for us to protect these resources and make sure they are used in a sustainable way,” he cautioned.

Dr Sarita Khadka said graphene, one-atom thick sheet of graphite, is a newly isolated form of carbon. The pure, flawless crystal has many interesting properties. “The underlying rich physics of graphene promises applications which will completely revolutionise the electronic industry and a step ahead to miniaturise the electronic devices. The unusual electronic properties and nanometer thickness together makes graphene a potential candidate for electronic applications,” she said.

Dr Hemendra Gupta of SPECS presented a weather monitoring kit to the school and demonstrated the methods of weather monitoring.
